Invitation to Media Reporters: Regional Consultations for the Philippine Youth Development Plan 2011-2016

28 July 2011
Job Opening: Journalist for Alphabet Media (Singapore)
We are the largest publisher of regional public sector content in Asia, based in Singapore. Our team is recognised for the quality of its published products, and events. By creating great content for our readers and conference delegates we build great audiences for our advertisers and industry partners.

Alphabet Media produces print and online titles including FutureGov, Defence Asia and Asian Security Review - and produces internationally acclaimed conferences and industry seminars.

Journalist (Chinese) - Singapore

FutureGov Asia Pacific magazine, published by Alphabet Media, is looking for a talented Chinese-speaking journalist to join our team in Singapore. As a regional media company with publishing, events, research and training activities throughout the Asia Pacific region, shortlisted candidates will need to demonstrate an internationally-oriented mindset.

FutureGov Asia Pacific magazine covers the modernisation of the government, education and healthcare sector across the region. We are a source of practical ideas for policymakers and senior officials to increase the productivity, transparency and service quality of their organisations. Our readers are public administrators, and our content is apolitical and largely focused successful examples of the role of IT in improving outcomes at the central, state, municipal and local government level.

In addition to being a native speaker of the Chinese language, you need to be mature enough to understand, and cope with the different cultures of the Chinese Government and a multi-national company. You also need to be able to engage effectively with the public sector and IT companies on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. Rapport building skills are a must. Being a native from either Mainland China or Taiwan would be an added advantage.

In this role, you will be responsible for generating content from across Greater China, and in the wider region. You will also be turning your interviews into feature and news stories in Chinese, English, or both. This requires an ability to prioritise and analyse large amounts of information. You will also be assisting the development of a Chinese language version of FutureGov magazine.

Desired Skills & Experience

* You must have experience. Or else be a brainbox who graduated top of your class from a good university. We have high standards, and you must have a track record of personal performance.
* We like to keep things simple. Short sentences, short words preferred.
* Our content relates to the role of IT in improving public sector performance. Are you comfortable writing about technology issues? Do you have domain experience of public sector issues?
* The key trait of a successful journalist is the ability to engage with interviewees. You must have a proven ability to build rapport with senior executives in the private and public sector.
* You must be able to adjust yourself well between the modesty of Chinese statesmen and process-driven culture of a multinational.
* In addition, you need to understand the cultural nuances that are often manifested during conversations with Chinese (or Taiwanese) government officials.
* Our readers are interested in the opinions of the people we interview – you must be able to listen more than you talk.
* You will be working as part of a multinational team, split across multiple time zones. An ability to relate to international colleagues is essential.
* We run many government-to-government events in Hong Kong, Mainland China and Taiwan, and in the wider region. You must be willing to travel overseas from time-to-time.
* Our publication is written in British English ('International English’) – so you must have excellent English writing skills. You also need to be able to quickly turn an interview conducted in Chinese into a well-written article in English.
* If you are from Mainland China or Southeast Asia, you need to be able to type (even better if you can write) in Traditional Chinese; likely if you are native of Taiwan, you need to be able to understand and type in Simplified Chinese.
* Sense of humour. You don’t have to be a comedian, but the bosses like it when you laugh at their jokes.
* Variety is the spice of life: regional languages beyond English and Mandarin are welcomed.

Please prepare your CV, a cover letter explaining how you meet the above requirements, and samples of your work for our Editorial Director.

Fellowship Available under the Netherlands Fellowship Programme: RNTC Internet for Journalists Course (developing countries)
Deadline: 1 February 2012

Course aim

To strengthen the capacity of broadcast, print and online journalists and of the organisations they work for to use the Internet for the purposes of research, publication and distribution.

Course information

Journalism and the Internet

The Internet is an exciting medium for journalists and media organisations. Journalists can find a wealth of information, previously difficult to obtain, which can help them in their research and in keeping abreast of events and trends. The speed of the internet and its growing ubiquity (thanks also to the rise of mobile phones) means that it is increasingly for journalists the first medium on which their stories appear. On the internet they can present their news stories in new and attractive ways, supported by additional background material, using a variety of media, and stored in dossiers and archives for later retrieval. The rapid evolution of interactive technologies and social media also mean that, more than ever, journalists can engage with their audiences and readers.

As an integrated medium of publication, distribution and communication, in which the traditional, clear-cut divisions between text, graphics, audio and video are blurred, the internet poses a lot of challenges. Journalists, who saw themselves first and foremost as print or broadcast journalists now work as ‘content providers’ in multimedia newsrooms, generating material for a variety of different media platforms.

The principles of interactivity and non-linearity require that information for the internet has to be ordered and presented differently. Its multimedia nature also makes organisational demands. New structures have to be designed to cope with the new ways of production, publication and distribution. New ways of working pose a challenge to established working practices and attitudes. New business models have to be developed and adopted.

Since the Internet is still a relatively young medium, there is plenty of experimentation and innovation going on. The rise of social networks, ‘civilian journalism’ and the success of ‘YouTube’ mean that the Internet has also become an established competitor of mainstream media for the attention of audiences and readers worldwide. These developments are also changing the traditional role of journalists as well as their relationship with their audiences and readers. To be able to face the challenges of the 21st century, it is important that media organisations and the people who work for adapt to the changes taking place and incorporate them in the way they work.

Methodology: learning by doing

The course will be dedicated to enabling the participating journalists to work as Internet journalists/producers. The focus will be on content rather than on technical skills. Attention will be paid to the two central tenets of the Internet: information and communication. Special emphasis will be placed on the three main principles of multimedia environments: the multimedia mix, interactivity and non-linearity. The emphasis will be on learning by doing, focusing on theory and practice. In addition to attending course sessions and workshops, participants will be sent on a number of radio or television location assignments.

The potential and the use of the Internet as a source of information will be explored (the Internet as a research tool), and options for its use as a medium of communication, publication and distribution analysed and applied to the specific situation of the participants. The possibilities and advantages of the Internet – as well as some of its drawbacks – for journalists and the organisations they work for will be highlighted.

The participants will be from different professional media (radio, television, print, online). The aim of the course is to transcend these boundaries and merge the disciplines in search of the ideal of a multimedia journalist. Participants will acquire knowledge of the essentials of web-design (structure, interaction and lay-out) and skills for the development of websites and for production for the Internet, such as writing non-linear, interactive pieces, making graphics and producing audio and video. Participants will analyse existing examples of websites attached to newspapers, magazines and broadcasting organisations.

Participants will be invited to attend the Abu Dhabi Film Festival (United Arab Emirates) to form an international editorial team. This team will create daily issues of a gazette in English and Arabic covering the festival’s screenings, events, and encounters. It will be a unique opportunity to gain practical, hands-on experience in film journalism and, of course, meet like-minded people from around the world! Please read the information dossier for all the necessary information on applying for this edition of Nisimazine.

Nisimazine Workshops: General Background

The free daily magazine Nisimazine is made in the frame of a film journalism workshop for young aspiring film journalists. Nisimazine film journalism workshops have taken place during many international film festivals since the first edition in Cannes in 2006, notably: Torino Film Festival (Italy), DocPoint Helsinki (Finland), Alba International Film Festival (Italy), Cannes Film Festival (France), Iran International Documentary Film Festival (Tehran), European Festival on
Wheels (Kars and Artvin, Turkey), IDFA – International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (Netherlands), Festival de Lima (Peru), Festival do Rio (Brazil), and Abu Dhabi Film Festival (United Arab Emirates). Since the program’s beginning, more than 100 young critics from all over the world have benefited from developing their skills in a stimulating international environment, supported by experienced tutors and staff.

The Magazine

• Nisimazine Abu Dhabi will be printed in English and Arabic. The main working language of the editorial team will be English.
• The gazette will be in A4 format (magazine style) and contain film reviews, interviews, thematic articles, news, pictures from the festival, etc.
• Eight issues will be published daily during the festival
• Around 2,000 printed copies will be published for each issue and distributed to festival audiences and professional guests. An electronic version will also be available on the Nisimazine official website (www.nisimazine.eu)
• There will also be the opportunity to publish a video blog. We are therefore interested in candidates who have video-making experience, as well as skills in writing/photography

The Editorial Team

A clear and precise division of tasks is needed for Nisimazine workshops to be successful. In Abu Dhabi, the team will be composed of:

Three members of staff from the NISI MASA European Secretariat

• Matthieu Darras, Director of the Publication
• Maartje Alders, Editor-in-Chief / Graphic Designer
• Jude Lister, Editor / Coordinator

Two professional tutors

• One for the English version, one for Arabic version (names to be confirmed)

Eight participants

• Seven film journalists and one photographer.

The Schedule

Important: As of the announcement of selected participants, the essential preparation period will
begin. Participants will be required to begin researching, watching films from the festival programme (some will be available in advance), making interviews, taking part in online meetings to brainstorm the magazine’s content, and writing the first articles.

2011 Kyoto Prize Journalism Fellowship for North American Journalists
Deadline: 1 September 2011

In the spirit of the Kyoto Prize to honor the men and women who have made significant contributions to the betterment of society, PLNU, in support of the San Diego-based Kyoto Prize Symposium, offers a journalism fellowship to provide educational opportunities in the various Prize categories. Applications for the next Kyoto Prize Journalism Fellowship are available now.

Purpose:

The Kyoto Prize Journalism Program provides fellowships to journalists to assist them in furthering their knowledge and ability to report in greater depth about one or more of the following prize categories: Advanced Technology, Basic Sciences, and Arts and Philosophy. The Kyoto Prize – an international award for lifetime achievement – is given to individuals and groups who have made outstanding contributions to humankind’s scientific, cultural and spiritual development. Each prize consists of a 20-karat-gold Kyoto Prize medal, and a cash gift totaling 50 million yen (approximately US$615,000).

Over the past 27 years, the Kyoto Prize has recognized technology pioneers, like personal computer inventor Alan Kay, cell-phone visionary Amos Joel, and DNA sequencer Leroy Hood; scientists, like primatologist Jane Goodall, ecologist Dan Janzen, and Scripps oceanographer Walter Munk; and artists, like expressionist painter Roy Lichtenstein, dance-theater choreographer Pina Bausch, and the famed cinematographer Akira Kurosawa.

The Kyoto Prize was founded on the belief that humankind has no higher calling than to strive for the betterment of humanity. With this guiding principle, the program is designed to explore the concepts of developing a balance between scientific progress and spiritual depth as exhibited by the Laureates each year. This is a unique opportunity for journalists who have worked to attain a level of excellence in their field and hope to enhance their knowledge of technology, sciences and the arts.

The selected fellow will travel to Kyoto, Japan, to attend the Kyoto Prize Award Ceremony on November 10, and subsequent Laureate lectures and workshops on November 11 and 12. He or she will also be provided with opportunities to interview the Kyoto Prize Laureates in Japan. The 2011 Laureates have made outstanding contributions to our world: groundbreaking materials scientist Dr. John W. Cahn, pioneering astrophysicist Dr. Rashid Sunyaev, and Kabuki legend Tamasaburo Bando V. For information about the latest Laureates and the Kyoto Prize ceremonies, please visit http://www.inamori-f.or.jp/index_e.html.

The program is designed for professional science, technology, and arts writers and editors in print, radio, and broadcast media, including freelance journalists. The fellowship provides learning experiences in the fields of the latest Kyoto Prize Laureates through access to the Laureates in interviews, lectures and workshops. It is designed to cover travel and lodging expenses. Journalists will gain valuable understanding of the historical context of the Laureates’ works and their impact on our world.

Point Loma Nazarene University is pleased to make the Fellowship available as part of its mission to provide modern education in the sciences and reflective education in the arts, philosophy and society. Any journalist is welcome to apply – please see eligibility requirements below. The selection committee – comprised of professional journalist(s) and journalism professor(s) – will announce the 2011 Fellow on September 15.

Accomplished Journalists from Asia are invited to spend three months in Singapore under the fellowship programme at Nanyang Technological University’s Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information. Applications are due by 4th October 2011.

The programme, supported by Temasek Foundation and NTU, will run from 7 February through 29 April 2011. Up to 17 Asia-based journalists will be selected for the fully-funded fellowship.

Fellows will be given the opportunity to pursue their own intellectual interests away from the usual deadline pressures of their jobs. For their independent projects, the 2010 Fellows used their three-month sabbatical to investigate topics as diverse as the role of the media, free trade agreements, and Singapore’s transport policies.

The programme also includes seminars and workshops to sharpen professional skills and deepen participants’ understanding of latest trends and key issues facing journalism. For the 2011 round, a special seminar is being planned on the challenges of reporting on ethnic diversity and inter-religious issues.

Fellows will also be introduced to key newsmakers in Singapore’s public sector, business community and civil society, providing insights into what makes Singapore tick and its future challenges.

This is the third time the Fellowship is being organised. The 2009 and 2010 Fellows represented print, broadcast and online media, and came from 15 countries and territories.
