Job Opening: Journalist for Alphabet Media (Singapore)
We are the largest publisher of regional public sector content in Asia, based in Singapore. Our team is recognised for the quality of its published products, and events. By creating great content for our readers and conference delegates we build great audiences for our advertisers and industry partners.

Alphabet Media produces print and online titles including FutureGov, Defence Asia and Asian Security Review - and produces internationally acclaimed conferences and industry seminars.

Journalist (Chinese) - Singapore

FutureGov Asia Pacific magazine, published by Alphabet Media, is looking for a talented Chinese-speaking journalist to join our team in Singapore. As a regional media company with publishing, events, research and training activities throughout the Asia Pacific region, shortlisted candidates will need to demonstrate an internationally-oriented mindset.

FutureGov Asia Pacific magazine covers the modernisation of the government, education and healthcare sector across the region. We are a source of practical ideas for policymakers and senior officials to increase the productivity, transparency and service quality of their organisations. Our readers are public administrators, and our content is apolitical and largely focused successful examples of the role of IT in improving outcomes at the central, state, municipal and local government level.

In addition to being a native speaker of the Chinese language, you need to be mature enough to understand, and cope with the different cultures of the Chinese Government and a multi-national company. You also need to be able to engage effectively with the public sector and IT companies on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. Rapport building skills are a must. Being a native from either Mainland China or Taiwan would be an added advantage.

In this role, you will be responsible for generating content from across Greater China, and in the wider region. You will also be turning your interviews into feature and news stories in Chinese, English, or both. This requires an ability to prioritise and analyse large amounts of information. You will also be assisting the development of a Chinese language version of FutureGov magazine.

Desired Skills & Experience

* You must have experience. Or else be a brainbox who graduated top of your class from a good university. We have high standards, and you must have a track record of personal performance.
* We like to keep things simple. Short sentences, short words preferred.
* Our content relates to the role of IT in improving public sector performance. Are you comfortable writing about technology issues? Do you have domain experience of public sector issues?
* The key trait of a successful journalist is the ability to engage with interviewees. You must have a proven ability to build rapport with senior executives in the private and public sector.
* You must be able to adjust yourself well between the modesty of Chinese statesmen and process-driven culture of a multinational.
* In addition, you need to understand the cultural nuances that are often manifested during conversations with Chinese (or Taiwanese) government officials.
* Our readers are interested in the opinions of the people we interview – you must be able to listen more than you talk.
* You will be working as part of a multinational team, split across multiple time zones. An ability to relate to international colleagues is essential.
* We run many government-to-government events in Hong Kong, Mainland China and Taiwan, and in the wider region. You must be willing to travel overseas from time-to-time.
* Our publication is written in British English ('International English’) – so you must have excellent English writing skills. You also need to be able to quickly turn an interview conducted in Chinese into a well-written article in English.
* If you are from Mainland China or Southeast Asia, you need to be able to type (even better if you can write) in Traditional Chinese; likely if you are native of Taiwan, you need to be able to understand and type in Simplified Chinese.
* Sense of humour. You don’t have to be a comedian, but the bosses like it when you laugh at their jokes.
* Variety is the spice of life: regional languages beyond English and Mandarin are welcomed.
