Math Paper Press and editor Pooja Makhijani are seeking previously-unpublished personal essays and memoirs from new Singaporeans (naturalized citizens), residents (Permanent or otherwise), and native-born Singaporeans and “as told to” accounts for an anthology of English-language literary nonfiction to be published in early 2014, tentatively titled Altogether Elsewhere.
Singapore, a self-proclaimed nation of immigrants, has begun to reexamine its policies, values, and in essence, itself, by scrutinizing immigration. Altogether Elsewhere is about the changing face of a nation told through the personal geographies of some of its residents.
Altogether Elsewhere reflects on what it means to be “foreign” in Singapore in the twenty-first century. It attempts to answer, “What is ‘home’?”, given the ways in which labor, capital, and ideas transcend borders. And it aims to re-examine the terms “integration” and “assimilation” and “naturalization” in a wired society where one’s homeland is never too far away.
GUIDELINES:
Accounts should speak of histories—personal, communal, national. Submissions should be honest, entertaining, and well-written. They should possess a command of language, an elegance of style, and a subtlety of thought and perception. Do not be moralistic or preachy; aim for wisdom.
Submissions for this anthology fall into three categories. Essays can tackle the topics posed above (what it means to be “foreign” in Singapore, what is “home”, etc.) or begin at the prompts suggested below.

Pooja Makhijani is the editor of Under Her Skin: How Girls Experience Race in America, an anthology of essays by women that explores the complex ways in which race shapes American lives and families. She is also the author of Mama’s Saris, a picture book.
Her bylines have also appeared in The New York Times, The Village Voice, Time Out New York, POSKOD.sg, and DesignSponge.com among others.
Pooja has taught writing and literature at Western Connecticut State University and Middlesex County College. She has also conducted writing workshops and presentations at a number of colleges and universities, schools, libraries, and other educational institutions all over the United States and Singapore.
She holds a B.S. from Johns Hopkins University and an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from Sarah Lawrence College. Pooja lives in Singapore with her husband, her daughter, an antique typewriter, and too many books.

- First person “as told to” accounts of new Singaporeans (naturalized citizens) or residents (Permanent or otherwise) who may not feel comfortable and/or be able to write their story in English (i.e. a grandparent from China, a caretaker from Indonesia, a nanny from Sri Lanka). Submissions in this category can address the questions posed in Category 1. Writers whose accounts are selected for publication will also be asked to provide a 250-word reflection on their relationship with their subject.
- First-person essays or memoirs written by native-born Singaporeans. Submissions in this category can address: What is your personal geography? Why have you chosen (or not chosen or had chosen for you) to stay in Singapore? If you hold multiple passports, what roots you to Singapore? What is Singapore’s version of citizenship and/or of “welcoming migrants” and how have attitudes to migrants changed over time?

The Golden Point Award is Singapore’s premier creative writing competition for Short Story and Poetry in the nation’s four official languages: English, Chinese, Malay and Tamil. Established by the National Arts Council since 1993, the national literary writing competition serves as a significant platform for literary excellence and launching new writers. The competition’s aims are to identify and nurture new creative writing talent, develop the literary penmanship of writers in Singapore and to create a conducive environment for creative thinking and literary expression in Singapore.
The submission of entries will close on 1 July 2013, 5pm. The results of the competition will be revealed at the GPA Prize-Giving Ceremony, which will be held during the 2013 Singapore Writers Festival in early November.
CATEGORIES
The competition consists of the following two genre categories for all four languages:

WHO MAY PARTICIPATE:
The competition is open only to writers who, at time of application, have yet to publish a solo work in the specific genre they are competing in. - YOUth Write is a creative writing competition organised by the Singapore Press Holdings Foundation, in collaboration with IN, a student publication by The Straits Times.
- YOUth Write is open to all Secondary One to Secondary Five students (or equivalent).
- Essays should be between 400 and 500 words.
- IN will be running a series of creative writing tips in its publication. Teachers and students are encouraged to make use of these resources for this competition.

- The nature of the teaching/mentorship duties will be negotiated with the Division of English according to the needs of the Division and the experience of the writer.
Each appointed writer will be expected
- to provide one to two readings to the general public per semester,
- to hold open-door consultation hours for a minimum of two hours per week of appointment, and
- to participate in the cultural activities of the Division.
- The applicant’s publication history should demonstrate a capacity for literary excellence.
- The applicant must hold Singapore Citizenship or Permanent Residency.
- Applicants must be available to pursue their residency duties full time during the period of the residency.
- Appointment will remain subject to the satisfaction of NTU’s pre-employment requirements, including (for foreign appointees) the issuing of a work pass by Singapore’s Ministry of Manpower.
The appointed writer will be paid on the academic salary scale as a regular fulltime faculty member. In addition, the writer will be provided with

- Experience in digital media a distinct advantage
- An outstanding project management track record
- Experience dealing with senior executives
- Good understanding of international business and management issues
- Good understanding of Asia, or parts thereof
- Understanding and experience in technology subjects highly advantageous
- PowerPoint skills and ability to manipulate and analyse data in Excel preferred
- Native English. Other Asian languages a definite advantage
- Excellent writing, editing, presentation and author-management skills
- Strong sense of editorial integrity
- Strong data analysis skills a definite advantage
- Confidence and diplomatic skills to handle unfamiliar topics and difficult clients
- Ability to work independently in a very busy environment
