The one-day intensive workshop on literary translation from English>Arabic, led by author Fadia Faqir, will address the following questions: should texts be contextualised or blind translated? What are the strategic decisions that have to be made before translation? How to decide the salient generic, aesthetic, linguistic features of texts? What to do about style, register, slang, cultural references? How to deal with ambiguity and plays on language when translating? How to tackle hybridity and intertexuality? Who are the better translators the ‘targeteers’ or the ‘sourcerers’? Can you find a satisfactory equivalent in the target language? Is it possible to reproduce the tone and the intention of the source text? Should the final translation ‘correlate objectively’ with the original? Is rendering a text into another language an act of compromise? Are consultations with the text’s author useful?

The Intensive Screenwriting Workshop is an initiative founded by Cinephilia Productions in September 2012. The workshop provides deep insights on the craft of screenwriting. Participants' screenplays that get developed during the workshop get the opportunity to be funded and produced by Cinephilia Productions based on a submission process.

Cinephilia Productions has successfully wrapped up the workshops in Dubai and Abu Dhabi in early March and the next workshop venue is the Arraya Complex in  Kuwait, still with award-winning writer/ Director Darine Hotait.

FACILITATOR:

Darine Hotait is a Lebanese American film writer, director and producer. She received her Masters Degree in film writing and directing from the prestigious Art Center College of Design in California. In 2008, She founded Cinephilia Productions in Los Angeles and later in New York, where she produced a number of award winning films.

She has written, directed and produced a number of short films that has received acclaim and awards at various international film festivals such as 'Beirut...Hide and Seek', ' The Far Side of Laughter', 'Command or Truth', 'Hymn for Isis'...and more.

Darine has written a number of feature screenplays. Her debut screenplay 'Symphony of a Flood' has made the top 5 finalists at the San Francisco Hearst Screenwriting Grant. The film is now in pre-production.
Her second screenplay titled 'Decoding Bach' is sponsored by the New York Foundation For The Arts and now in development phase.

At the moment, Darine is producing an Iranian feature film written and directed by Abazar Noorizad.

She resides in New York.

Writer's Mantra is a workshop for providing a ‘kick start’ to the writing talent of creative individuals from varied backgrounds and giving them tools for penning publishable fiction. The workshop will be held at the British Library in Ahmedabad from 23rd to 24th of March 2013.

Want to write your own songs and make a record? Join Joey Loy in the process of songwriting. Participants will discover the art of lyric writing, interpretation and how to sing it, putting it together with the band and producing it on the recording software.

Joey Loy is a music producer, engineer, educator, singer, songwriter, musician and a potential voice talent. Recently, his involvement as a performer and unique song writing ability has made him a regular in open mic sessions, featured act and a favorite name in the area of live sound.

In autumn 2013 the Goethe-Institut is offering a two-month advanced training course in Germany for cultural journalists from the Arab world. A four-week seminar phase in Berlin and Munich is followed by individual internships at institutions in all of Germany.

The aim of the programme is to enhance the professional skills of Arab cultural journalists, to set up a self-supporting Arab network between the journalists and their organizations, and to promote the dialogue between German and Arab institutions.

CULTURAL JOURNALISTS

• Training: September 2 to 27, 2013 in Berlin and Munich
• Internships: September 30 to October 11 or 15, 2013
• (2-4 weeks individually) nationwide

PARTICIPANTS:

• Independent journalists from the fields of print, online, radio, or television with initial experience in cultural reporting
• Age: between 25 and 40 years
• Verifiably at least three years of professional experience
• Verifiably good English skills

In this course you will learn basic skills of screenwriting. Under supervision of a professional screenwriter you will be guided through the process of writing and completing your own film screenplay, just in the span of 2 weeks.

What is exceptional about this course is that you will be learning screenwriting while travelling across the states of Central and Northern India.

We will take you through some of the most amazing places in India, including: Delhi, Varanasi, Agra, Amritsar, Dharamsala, and visit some of the most remote villages, in search for inspiration in the real life of this vibrant and colorful subcontinent.

• Workload: 15 days; Total: 100 hours; Students meet every day of the week, for 3-4 hours classes and writing labs. Students must budget additional daily hours to write (preferably 3 hours a day).

ABOUT THE COURSE:

This intensive 15 days Screenwriting workshop introduces students to the craft of screenwriting, establishing a foundation for all future writing. Students will learn the essential elements of storytelling, understanding film structure, narrative construction, character development, dialogue and visual elements. The classes will prepare them with the techniques and technical vocabulary to write narrative screenplays.

The course will cover practical issues in: classic screenplay structure; outlining – from logline to fully developed outline; 3 act dramatic structure; techniques for organizing a narrative script; story and character development; plot vs. story; elements of the scene; constructing dialogues, writing the visual image, theme; conflict; flashbacks and dream sequences; voiceover, text and subtext; developing your writing style; genre; visualization; climaxes and resolutions.

Script formatting will also be covered and the students will be mentored how to write scene descriptions, describe characters and locations, and to develop action sequences as they develop their own scripts.

The workshop will cover both writing for a full-length narrative script as well as conceiving of the short film script. Emphasis will be given to writing from experience rather than an extensive knowledge of film history.

FACULTY: Course will be taught from an experienced screenwriter with a background in professional story development. Courtney Stephens is a Los Angeles based film maker, with a Master Degree in screenwriting from the American Film Institute, one of the worlds' finest university film schools. Her screenplays have played numerous festivals worldwide.

COURSE FORMAT: The course topics will be highlighted by the instructor through lectures, practical skills developing exercises and clips. Readings will be sent to the students prior to the workshop and additional materials will be provided in the class. The workshop offers student- driven classes in which students work throughout a three acts structure of their screenplays, from logline to treatment, then from outline to screenplay, under the guidance of the instructor, with the goal to develop a first draft of their feature-length screenplay.

ASSIGNMENTS: During the workshop students will be given (on daily basis) instructions and homework tasks designed as building blocks for creating their own screenplays. At the end of the workshop students will be expected to have completed their full treatments, fleshed out characters, organized their story structures, and completed a first draft of their screenplays. This can be used as the foundation for their feature-length screenplay, which should be the end product.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon completion of the program, students will have gained an in-depth understanding of story structure, character, conflict and dialogue, and the completed draft of a feature length film script. This will provide a strong foundation for all further writing, allowing you to embark on the new career path as a professional screenwriter.

REQUIREMENTS (for submission in training course): 1/2 passport size photos, 2/ copy of identification cards, 3/ proof/copy of the payment, 4/ Indian visa. Students do not need any previous screenwriting experience to sign up for this course. However, they must come to the first day of class with an idea for their screenplay. This idea serves as a starting point for subsequent work in the program.

EQUIPMENT: Students must have access to their personal notebook, PC or Apple computer during the workshop.

The MSU-Iligan Institute of Technology and the Mindanao Creative Writers Group are accepting manuscripts to the 20th Iligan National Writers Workshop (INWW) to be held on May 20-24, 2013 in Iligan City.

The INWW introduces a new format this year. There are 18 slots available for writers who have attended regional writers workshops and whose works are unpublished. Six (6) INWW alumni from across the regions are welcome to send their works in progress along with a brief paper on their creative process.

Applicants may submit five (5) poems; one, one-act play; one short fiction, and an excerpt of a novel in progress in any of these languages: Filipino, English, Cebuano, Waray, Hiligaynon, Kinaray-a, Akyanon, Chabacano, Maranao or Higaunon.

Except for works in Filipino and in English, please provide translations of your works in either Filipino or in English. Those submitting excerpts of novels should provide a one-page summary of the novel.

Keynote Speaker this year is Dr. Jose Butch Dalisay, Director of the UP Institute of Creative Writing. Deadline for entries is on March 30, 2013.

The INWW is funded by the MSU-IIT and the National Commission for Culture and Arts (NCCA).
