To support the development of Emirati teen literature in Arabic, the UAE Board on Books for Young People (UAEBBY) and the Goethe-Institut Gulf Region continue their “Made in UAE” project and organise a workshop for Emirati authors of Young Adult novels of the fantasy/dystopian/sci-fi genre with one of Germany’s best-known Young Adult novel authors, Rainer Wekwerth, from 28 April to 1 May 2013.

For four days, participants will be given the opportunity to work with Rainer Wekwerth on their book projects, discuss problems and challenges of writing for teenagers and exchange ideas in a friendly and supportive environment. Meetings with publishers as well as a panel discussion with Rainer Wekwerth at the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair 2013 will complete the workshop.

The workshop will take place all day from Sunday, 28 April till Thursday, 1 May 2013 in Abu Dhabi (venue location tbc). Participation is free, but places are limited and priority will be given to those authors already working on a book project. Allocation of the places will be based on the submission of a short synopsis of the book project. Please note that the language of communication during the workshop is English.

The Emirates Airline Festival of Literature is the Middle East’s largest celebration of the written and spoken word, bringing people of all ages and backgrounds together with authors from across the world to promote education, debate and above all else, love of reading and writing.

The Festival creates a wonderful opportunity for UAE nationals, residents and visitors to meet world famous authors, attend literary debates, listen to readings, participate in workshops and experience the exciting fringe and children’s events. With simultaneous translation between Arabic and English for all sessions, the Festival is a meeting of minds where ideas are shared and friendships are formed – not least among the authors themselves.

The Fifth Anniversary edition of the Festival opens with a spectacular event on the evening of Tuesday 5th March. This is followed on Wednesday evening by the Dubai Culture sponsored Desert Stanzas evening of poetry and music which takes place at a Bedouin encampment.

In the following days, visitors can enjoy literary discussions, panel debates, masterclasses, workshops and readings as well as experience the Fringe and children’s events. There are cookery demonstrations, special art displays and Literary Lunches. Also new for 2013 are the evening events which also include the Murder Mystery Dinner on Thursday 7 March, The Lighter Side on Friday 8 March and a Closing Ceremony on Saturday 9 March.

Gulf News is a daily English language newspaper published from Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates with a 2008 BPA audited circulation of over 115,000 readers.[The newspaper won the Asia - Pacific award for best newspaper production in July 1990.

Gulf News was first launched in tabloid format on September 30, 1978 by prominent UAE businessman Abdul Wahab Galadari;. In November 1984, three leading UAE businessmen, purchased the company and formed Al Nisr Publishing. The new owners of the paper were Obaid Humaid Al Tayer, Abdullah Al Rostamani and Juma Al Majid. With the death of Abdullah Al Rostamani in 2006, his position on the board is held by a family nominee while the other directors remain. Under new ownership, Gulf News was re-launched on December 10, 1985 and was free to the public. From February 1986, the public was charged one Dirham (US 27 cents) a copy for the Gulf News package.

After moving into new premises in 1986, Gulf News began to be distributed to other GCC countries: Bahrain from September 1987; Oman from April 1989; Saudi Arabia from March 1989; and Qatar from April 1989. It also became available in Pakistan from August 1988.

In order to provide better local coverage for its readers, Gulf News opened various bureaus around the United Arab Emirates, the GCC and the Subcontinent. The Abu Dhabi bureau was opened in 1982; Bahrain bureau in January 1988; Oman bureau in 1989; Manila bureau in August 1990; Al Ain bureau in 1994; Sharjah bureau in May, 1995; and the New Delhi bureau in November 1995.

The first Web Edition of Gulf News was launched on September 1, 1996.

Gulf News moved to its present headquarters on Sheikh Zayed Road in April 2000. The new headquarters state-of-the-art technology throughout, with fibre-optic cabling and the most advanced printing press in the Middle East.

Emirates Post has invited entries from UAE schoolchildren for the 42nd UPU International Letter-Writing Competition for Young People on the topic 'Why Water is a Precious Resource'. The competition is organized by Emirates Post in association with the Ministry of Education as part of the global activity of the Universal Postal Union (UPU), a United Nations body that oversees the world's posts.
The best entry at the UAE level will be entered for the global competition conducted by the UPU.

The competition is open to UAE schoolchildren aged between 10 and 15 years.

All entries should be routed through respective schools. The letter should be typed on computer, and contain between 500 and 1000 words and should be unpublished. Entries can be submitted in Arabic or English.

Three copies of each letter should be submitted to Emirates Post Philately Department, before March 30, 2013. More details about the application procedures can be obtained from Emirates Philately by visiting the website emiratespost.ae.

UAE Winners and supervising teachers will be felicitated by Emirates Post at the annual World Post Day function in Dubai on October 9, 2013.

Launched in 1971, the UPU International Letter-Writing Competition for Young People's raises awareness about the crucial role that postal services play in societies, foster composition skills and letter-writing enjoyment among the world's youth.

Each year the UPU chooses a theme and the competition is then organized in member countries by their national Posts. To mark the United Nations' International Decade for Action 'Water for Life' 2005-2015, the 2013 competition has chosen the theme 'Why water is a precious resource.'

POETRY WORKSHOPS WITH IMTIAZ DHARKER

Acclaimed poet Imtiaz Dharker will be the first to return to Dubai, with two poetry masterclasses on Friday 9 November and a poetry reading in Dar Al Adaab’s literary square on Saturday 10 November.

The first workshop, beginning at 10am on Friday 9 November, will be for adults interested in improving their poetry writing. This will be followed at 2pm with a class for young adults (ages 12-18), which will be focused on unlocking the memory to lead participants into writing a poem.

These workshops will be followed on Saturday 10 November with a poetry reading at Dar Al Adaab, at which Imtiaz will be joined by a number of Dubai-based poets. This will be a ticketed event, tickets will be available online or at the door and cost only 30AED.

CREATIVE WRITING WORKSHOPS WITH TIM BOWLER

The following weekend, Tim Bowler, the Carnegie Award-winning author of River Boy, will be teaching writing workshops for young adults (10am Friday 16 November) and adults (2pm Friday 16 November and 2pm Saturday 16 November).

Both Tim and Imtiaz will also be teaching workshops for the winners of the 2012 Oxford University Press Story Writing Competition and Taaleem Poetry Award respectively. These workshops are only available to the winners, who have been contacted by email.
