The Middle East Institute, National University of Singapore seeks a Manager (Multimedia and Publications) to develop, edit, and disseminate its print and online publications. The editor produces two scholarly paper series and edited volumes as well as an online essay series, blog, and newsletter. He/she also produces other collatoral as needed, such as the Institute’s annual conference publications, advertisements, and brochures. At least five years of experience as an editor and writer, preferably for an academic or policy-oriented institution, is required, as is an M.A. degree or higher in a relevant field. A background in managing a website and/or producing content for the web is also desired. Knowledge of the field of Middle East studies and of the region is essential. Some Arabic language preferred. This is a 2 year contract position (renewable).

DUTIES:
  • Solicit and edit website and print content in collaboration with MEI researchers and staff as well as outside contributors, particularly for the online essay series ("Insights")
  • Solicit content for and edit the MEI blog
  • Commission papers for and edit the Singapore Middle East Papers, a quarterly print series
  • Commission papers for and edit the business/economics paper series, a quarterly print series
  • Liaise with the Editorial Advisory Committee, which evaluates submissions for the paper series and edited volumes
  • Assist MEI research fellows in preparing their work for publication in article or book form
  • Edit conference volumes and liaise with publishers
  • Develop and edit the quarterly newsletter with significant help from MEI research assistants
  • Contribute content to the Insight series and blog
  • Develop new publication projects, such as a weekly roundup of Asian opinion on Middle East issues
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master's degree or higher
  • At least five years of experience and background in editing, publishing, and manuscript preparation, with excellent writing skills
  • Substantial knowledge of the Middle East and Middle East research and studies, as well as knowledge of at least one Middle Eastern language (preferably Arabic)
  • Personal interest in the Middle East and commitment to furthering MEI's mission of bringing Middle East knowledge and research to Singapore and Asia
  • Experience leading and juggling multiple projects, including managing freelancers, research assistants, and interns
  • Experience with website design and content management systems
  • Familiarity with design software such as InDesign and PhotoShop
  • Experience with social networking and marketing of publications in the field of Middle East studies
