The essay contest is open to students in higher education programs aged between 18 and 30 years and who are residents or citizens of an Asia‐Pacific country. An eligible entrant must be an individual and agree to abide by these terms and conditions. The essay should be submitted by 20 September 2011.
Entrants must have full copyright to the essay submitted, which they must be able to certify if requested. Essays submitted in previous FAO competitions and contests will not be accepted. Submissions received will not be acknowledged. The contest is not open to FAO staff or family members.
Contest theme:
Essays will be submitted under the theme of APFW 2011: ‘New Challenges – New Opportunities in Asia‐Pacific forestry’. The writers are free to decide upon the title of their essay within this theme.
Selection criteria:
Essays will be evaluated on relevance to the theme, innovation of the idea(s), strength and logic of arguments and quality of writing.
Jury:
The jury panel will consist of members of the APFC Secretariat and the Communication and Knowledge Management Office at the FAO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific.
Prizes:
Two prize winners will be invited to attend the Asia‐Pacific Forestry Week 2011 in Beijing, China, 7‐11 November, 2011. The prize package includes a return airfare to Beijing and mid‐range accommodation during the event. The winners of the essay contest will be informed 30 September 2011.
In the case that a winning entrant is unable to attend Asia‐Pacific Forestry Week 2011, then all prizes awarded to the entrant will be forfeited in favour of another shortlisted entrant at the discretion of the contest selection committee. Selected essays will be displayed during the APFW 2011 and be published on the FAO forestry website, the conference proceedings and in other FAO publications.
Essay submission:
Each entrant can submit a maximum of one (1) essay. The essay should not exceed 2, 000 characters. The language of the essay contest is English; essays written in other languages will not be accepted. The essay should be submitted in *.doc format (Standard Microsoft Office Word 2003 or equivalent). The essay entry must correspond to the information given in the essay entry section on page two (2) of this document. Please kindly rename the essay file to: APFW2011_Essay_YOURNAME.doc before submitting.
