APEC Digital Opportunity Center Creative Writing Competition ($100 top prize and ASUS products | Asia Pacific)

The APEC Digital Opportunity Center (ADOC) Project is an ECOTECH initiative that Chinese Taipei first proposed in the 2003 APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting. It aims to assist in transforming digital divides into digital opportunities throughout the Asia-Pacific region. The ADOC initiative utilizes the advantages of Chinese Taipei’s information and communications industry, and its experience in developing an e-society, to help APEC member economies upgrade their information and communications technology (ICT) application capabilities; hence, ADOC increases the digital opportunities available to vulnerable segments within the APEC community.
We are going to hold a contest called” ADOC Writing Contest 2012”. The purpose of this contest is to encourage our trainees to share their stories and experiences during their participation of the ADOC project. Trainees can submit articles in the following topics:
By October 5, people who want to participate in the contest will have to post their articles on ADOC website Forum.
Local managers of each PMEs will select 3 articles of all posted articles from our forum. By October 20, those who were chosen will enter the next stage and will be awarded USD 100 later. If the articles are written in local languages, local managers have to translate them into English.
From October 21 to October 31, trainees and general public can go to our forum to have a vote in electing the best article of 30 articles from 10 PMEs. Online-voting will account for 50% and the remaining 50% will be based on the qualification given by the activity panels. The participants who stand out at the final stage will be awarded ASUS products (First prize: Zenbook, second prize: Eee Pad Transformer, third prize: ASUS Eee PC). If the winner’s resident area does not have the supply of the above products, ADOC reserves the right to give other ASUS products which are equal to the value of the above products as a substitute.

The East-West Center is pleased to announce its 2012 International Media Conference, to be held June 22-24 in Seoul. The conference theme is “Networked News: How New Media is Shaping Stories in Asia and the Pacific.”
The 3rd East-West Center International Media Conference will look at news and journalism issues in Asia, the Pacific and United States through the prism of New Media. South Korea, the most wired nation in the world, provides an ideal venue with its cutting-edge IT industry and dynamic media, including one of the earliest citizen-reporting networks. The conference will be held at Yonsei University.

We invite contributions for a special issue of Asia Pacific Journal for Arts Education that explores current issues, trends and practices in drama/theatre education in the context of recent educational reforms, global economic crisis, and the formulation of the Seoul Agenda for Arts in Education. While perspectives from the Asia Pacific will be the main focus, we welcome submissions from other educational jurisdictions beyond the region.
Example of topics may include, but are not limited to:
• Programs and degrees in drama/theatre education
• Drama/theatre in the broader curriculum
• Drama/theatre in educational, community and social Contexts
• Implementation examples and issues
• Evaluation and assessment
• Good practice examples

Asia-Pacific Regional Meeting (APRM) Essay Competition

We are pleased to announce the first ever Asia-Pacific Regional Meeting (APRM) Essay Competition. The winner(s) of the contest will have their registration, accommodation and meals covered throughout their stay in Malaysia for APRM 2012! The winning essay, as well as the shortlisted essays, will be published in the September issue of Pulse, the official magazine of IFMSA Asia-Pacific.
There is no time machine to gain a sneak peak at the health status of our region in 2050. Nor do we have the talents of a fortune teller. With new medical advancements, as well as changes in social circumstances, political situation, and global economy, the world is ever-changing. Tell us your views on the health of the Asia-Pacific region in the future as far as the year 2050. We are interested to hear what you can foresee!
Your essay can be optimistic, fun, bleak, scientific, imaginary, prescriptive, story-like, whatsoever – as long as the essay gives us your glimpse of the future of Asia-Pacific health. You can focus on a specific health issue like health care systems or climate change, or present a general vision of the region’s health.
RULES AND GUIDELINES OF THE ESSAY COMPETITION
1. The competition is open to all medical students in the IFMSA Asia-Pacific region. The participants must include in the body of the email their particulars including: full name, name of NMO, nationality, date of birth, email address and name of institution with address.
2. Topic of the essay: Health in the Asia-Pacific in 2050
3. Regulations of the essay competition
3.1. The essay must be written in English.
3.2. Entries must be submitted as an individual and it must be unpublished work. Any form of plagiarism will result in disqualification of the essay.
3.3. Only one essay per participant may be submitted.
3.4. The essay should be 1,000 words or less, not including the title and references (if any). Format: Times New Roman, double spaced with font size 12 in Microsoft Word.
3.5. All entries should be submitted online to events@aprm2012.org with subject name: APRM 2012 Essay Competition – Your Name.
3.6. All essays will be blinded. The Organizing Committee (OC) for APRM will remove all identifying features from the essays before submitting them to the panel of judges.
3.7. The closing date of the competition is 30th June 2012. Entries which do not comply with any of the competition rules will be disqualified.
3.8. The essays will be assessed in confidence by an independent panel of judges. Their decision will be final and no appeals will be entertained.
3.9. Results will be announced on 31thJuly 2012. The name of the winner will be displayed on APRM 2012 official website. The OC will inform the winner(s) via email.

The East-West Center is pleased to announce its 2012 International Media Conference, to be held June 22-24 in Seoul. The conference theme is “Networked News: How New Media is Shaping Stories in Asia and the Pacific.”
The 3rd East-West Center International Media Conference will look at news and journalism issues in Asia, the Pacific and United States through the prism of New Media. South Korea, the most wired nation in the world, provides an ideal venue with its cutting-edge IT industry and dynamic media, including one of the earliest citizen-reporting networks. The conference will be held at Yonsei University.

The essay contest is open to students in higher education programs aged between 18 and 30 years and who are residents or citizens of an Asia‐Pacific country. An eligible entrant must be an individual and agree to abide by these terms and conditions. The essay should be submitted by 20 September 2011.

The Journal of Asia Pacific Studies is calling for papers for its August 2011 Issue (Vol 2, No 2). Articles dealing with the development, economics, and politics of the Asia Pacific Region are welcomed. Opinion papers will also be considered for the "multiple perspectives section". The Journal is published by the Central American Institute of Asia Pacific Studies and is indexed in EBSCOhost among others.
About the Journal:
The Journal of Asia Pacific Studies aims to serve as an outlet for research dealing with the interdisciplinary field of Asia Pacific Studies. As one of the most dynamic regions in the world, the Asia Pacific is of interest to a vast array of scholars and practitioners from many fields. Interest in the region is no longer limited to a few elite centers in the Global North but rather has spread to Latin America and other regions of the developing world. Moreover, Central America has started to look East as a way to diversify its traditional reliance on the Atlantic and North America. Due to the previously mentioned increased interest in the Pacific and Asia as its hub, the Guild of Independent Scholars in cooperation with several prominent Asian Scholars and Practitioners is launching the Journal of Asia Pacific Studies as an early step in the process leading to the establishment of the Central American Institute of Asia Pacific Studies (CAI-APS).
It is the hope of the Guild of Independent Scholars that the Journal will provide a link between the two regions and serve as a mean of communication for scholars and practitioners interested in Asia Pacific Studies. Since the field of Asia Pacific Studies is at an early stage in Central America the Journal aims to have an effect not only in the academic community but also at the policy making level. We are proud to present the prestigious 12th Annual CAPE New Writers Awards sponsored by Fox Entertainment Group and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. This unique program is dedicated to discovering and nurturing new Asian Pacific American voices for both Feature Film and Television. Winners in both the Film and TV categories will receive a $4,000 cash prize, the latest Final Draft screenwriting software, a staged reading of their winning script, and exclusive opportunities to meet with prominent entertainment executives and producers.
This year, we’re expanding ways to enter. If your script was produced as an independent feature with a budget under $1 million, you can now enter it into the 2011 CAPE New Writers Awards. And you can enter as many submissions as you’d like.
Submissions are being accepted from now until May 27, 2011. CAPE Members pay only $35 per submission. Non-members pay $50 per submission.
Over the years, CAPE has helped launch the careers of numerous writers in Hollywood. In 2009, TV Winner Aaron Ho won a coveted spot in the Disney/ABC Writing Program, and then joined the writing staff of the hit ABC series COUGAR TOWN. In 2010, TV Winner Randall Park landed a talent deal with NBC, and Feature Winner Jaffar Mahmood secured a highly competitive spot in the Disney/ABC Directing Program.

Call for Workshop Proposals: 2011 Asian Pacific Islander American Spoken Word and Poetry Summit
Deadline: 1 June 2011
The 2011 APIA Summit seeks workshop proposals to reflect our theme, “Moving It Forward, Bringing It Back.” We wish to honor the Summit’s legacy of art inseparably combined with community building and activism. We are asking that workshop presenters identify the creative and/or community issue aspects of their workshops as a central part of workshop proposals. Workshops with a specific activist issue or theme must include a writing exercise or other creative component.
We welcome proposals from presenters who identify as Asian/Asian American/Pacific Islander and plan on attending the Summit. We strongly encourage artists, organizers, and activists from underrepresented communities and underrepresented regions to submit proposals.
*Please note that as a grassroots effort, the Summit cannot fund travel or provide honorariums. Registration fees for all workshop presenters, however, will be waived.

The 2011 APIA Summit seeks workshop proposals to reflect our theme, “Moving It Forward, Bringing It Back.” We wish to honor the Summit’s legacy of art inseparably combined with community building and activism. We are asking that workshop presenters identify the creative and/or community issue aspects of their workshops as a central part of workshop proposals. Workshops with a specific activist issue or theme must include a writing exercise or other creative component.
We welcome proposals from presenters who identify as Asian/Asian American/Pacific Islander and plan on attending the Summit. We strongly encourage artists, organizers, and activists from underrepresented communities and underrepresented regions to submit proposals.
*Please note that as a grassroots effort, the Summit cannot fund travel or provide honorariums. Registration fees for all workshop presenters, however, will be waived.
Interested presenters should download the presenter application form and attach bio and description as .doc/.docx or .pdf attachments. Please send proposals to: apiasummit2011workshops@gmail.com. Deadline is June 1; we will notify presenters by July 1.

Calling all high school students to write an essay on the topic "Why Asian-Pacific Islander Heritage Month Is Important." ELIGIBILITY:
Open only to permanent, legal United States ("U.S.") residents who are physically located in the WRC terrestrial geographic viewing area in the District of Columbia, the counties of Allegany, Calvert, Charles, Frederick, Montgomery, Prince George's, St. Mary's, and Washington in the state of Maryland, and the counties of Arlington, Clarke, Culpepper, Fairfax, Fauquier, Frederick, King George, Loudoun, Page, Prince William, Rappahannock, Shenandoah, Spotsylvania, Stafford, Warren, and Westmoreland in the state of Virginia; who are thirteen (13) years to eighteen (18) years of age as of the beginning of the Contest Period; and who are enrolled as a student in grades nine (9) through twelve (12) in a high school located in the WRC terrestrial geographic viewing area (as described above) at the time of Entry. Officers, directors, and employees of Contest Entities (as defined below), members of these persons' immediate families (spouses and/or parents, children, and siblings, and their spouses, regardless of where they reside), and/or persons living in the same households as these persons (whether or not related thereto) are not eligible to enter or win the Contest. Contest Entities, as referenced herein, shall include Sponsors and their respective parent, subsidiary, and affiliate companies and administrative, advertising, and promotion agencies.
TO ENTER:
To enter, access the WRC website at www.nbcwashington.com (the "Website") and click on the Contest icon. Download, print, and complete the entry form (the "Entry Form"), which includes your name, address, phone number, email address, date of birth, and the title of your Essay (as defined below). As part of entering the Contest, you will also be required to submit one (1) essay on the following topic: "Why is Asian-Pacific Islander Heritage Month Important?" ("Essay"). Essay must be original (that is, written and created by you—assistance of any type is strictly prohibited), typed in the English language, and no more than one thousand (1,000) words in length. If an Essay exceeds this length, only the first one thousand (1,000) words will be judged. Essay and Entry Form together constitute an entry ("Entry"). Entries must be mailed to: Asian-Pacific Islander Heritage Month Essay Contest, WRC, 4001 Nebraska Avenue, N.W., Washington, DC 20016. Entry Forms are also available at the above address. NOTE: If you are under eighteen (18) years of age then you must obtain written permission from your parent or legal guardian by downloading the appropriate Minor Release Form from the Website ("Minor Release"). Minor Release must be signed by your parent or legal guardian and mailed in as part of your Entry, or your Entry may be disqualified.
Entries must be received before 11:59:00 p.m. ET on May 11, 2011, to be eligible for the Contest. You may enter only once during the Contest Period. Multiple entries received from any person or email address beyond this limit will void all such additional entries. The same Essay (or portions thereof) may not be used for more than one (1) Entry. Multiple Entries or Entries using Essays that have already been submitted (or portions thereof) will void all such additional Entries and contestants submitting such multiple Entries may be disqualified as determined by Sponsors in their sole discretion. Only the first eligible Entry featuring such Essay will be eligible for entry. Entries that are incomplete, garbled or unintelligible for any reason are void and will not be accepted. Each Essay must be original, truthful (as applicable), unpublished, created solely by the submitting contestant, and must not have been submitted in any other competition, and or infringe upon any rights of any third party, including but not limited to copyright, trademark and right of privacy and publicity. WINNER SELECTION AND NOTIFICATION:
On or about May 16, 2011, ten (10) finalists ("Finalists") will be selected by a panel of qualified judges, including community leaders and notable personalities chosen by Sponsors in their sole discretion (collectively, "Judges"). Essays will be judged on a twenty (20) point scale based on the following judging criteria: originality (five (5) points); relevance to the topic (five (5) points); grammar (five (5) points); and style (five (5) points). All decisions by the Judges will be final and binding. The total score of the Essay will be the score for the related Entry. The Contestants who submitted the Entries with the ten (10) highest point totals will be named Finalists (each a "Finalist"). In the event of a tie between two (2) or more Entries, the Entries of the tied contestants will be sent to an additional tie-breaking Judge who will rescore the Entries based on the judging criteria listed above. Sponsors reserve the right to select fewer than ten (10) Finalists, or no Finalists and/or terminate the Contest or extend the Contest Period, if, in Sponsors' sole discretion, an insufficient number of eligible, tasteful, or appropriate Entries are received. NOTE: If chosen as a potential Finalist, you must provide written permission from your parent or legal guardian in order to continue as a Finalist in the Contest.
Finalists will be invited to NBC4/WRC on or around May 24, 2011 to attend an award presentation with their parents/legal guardians. The Finalist who submitted the Entry with the highest point total will be named the first prize winner ("First Prize Winner"). The Finalist who submitted the Entry with the second highest point total will be named the second prize winner ("Second Prize Winner"). The Finalist who submitted the Entry with the third highest point total will be named the third prize winner ("Third Prize Winner"). The Finalist who submitted the Entry with the fourth highest point total will be named the fourth prize winner ("Fourth Prize Winner"). The first, second, third and fourth prize winners shall be referred to herein individually as "Winner" and collectively as "Winners". All decisions of the Judges are final and binding.
Each Winner (or his/her parent or legal guardian, if he/she is a minor) may be required to execute and return an eligibility release, release of liability, and, except where prohibited, publicity release (collectively, Contest Documents") at the award presentation. Call for Submissions: ‘Glocalising’ Approaches to Journalism Education and Training (Asia Pacific Media Educator Issue 21)

Race and religion. Gender discrimination. Poverty. Economic disparities. Class struggles. What we knew and how we understood these global issues during the preinternet days were what the international news agencies reported. Journalism students and educators in developing countries essentially saw the world through the eyes of the Western (predominantly ‘American’) media. Key research themes and discourses in the 60s and 70s were dominated by terms such as ‘media hegemony’, ‘propaganda’, ‘cultural imperialism’, ‘manufacturing consent’, ‘agenda setting’, ‘four theories of the press’, ‘new world information and communication order’, ‘development communication’, ‘development journalism’, and so forth.
Journalism textbooks on international communication and methods of reporting global issues were at that time limited to US-based journalism textbooks and practical notes provided by itinerant journalism professors - mainly from the United States, who would spend a semester or two sharing their stories and experiences with local students. That was the extent that journalism schools in post-colonial Asia imbued some sense of ‘global perspectives’ to its curriculum and among its local faculty staff.
Today, online access to media news sites and news events as they are breaking anytime anywhere is reshaping journalism’s locality once limited by geography and time. Disparate worlds of thoughts and communities are being connected by imageries and stories written by (professional and amateur) journalists from anywhere anytime and uploaded to websites for global readership. Are curriculum contents, research directions and discourse in journalism education and training in Asia keeping pace with the ‘glocalising’ of the news environment? How are journalism educators preparing their students for a ‘glocalised’ media market?
In this thematic issue, Asia Pacific Media Educator aims to map the trends, constraints and challenges of ‘glocalising’ the teaching and training of journalism in the Asia-Pacific region. APME is inviting submissions of 300 to 350-word abstract for consideration of a full paper for peer-review on the following topics:
• Analysing trends in journalism education, demographics of journalism faculty and profiles of journalism schools in developing countries.
• Evaluating and ranking the quality of journalism education, institution’s technological capabilities, student and program performance.
• Promoting professional journalism training and critical journalism studies relevant to media in developing countries.
• Approaches to global-oriented journalism education and training.
• Constraints, incentives and opportunities in ‘internationalising’ journalism education and how the quality of teaching and training may be improved.
• Providing students with learning opportunities to look at community issues and affairs in ‘glocal’ contexts.
• Enhancing the cultural and ‘global’ literacy of journalism students, their readiness for the profession upon graduation.
• Facilitating dialogue between different journalism schools and traditions of journalism teaching.
• Developing cross-cultural and comparative journalism research.
Contributors are welcome to submit other abstracts that relate to the broader theme.

APME is ranked ‘B’ by the Excellence for Research in Australia (ERA) board of the Australian Research Council. Which places APME in the top 30% of international refereed journals in related disciplines.
APME aims to generate dialogue among media educators, researchers and practitioners by publishing their analysis of media production and texts, journalism practice and innovations in journalism education and training. It will consider for publication original articles based on applied research that generates critical questions and examines media issues through comparative frameworks.
Commentaries and research papers should aim to challenge the conventions of journalism education and training, and provide practical ideas on improving the standard and currency of media reportage and media training.

Each award will be announced at the 2012 ALA Midwinter Meeting in Dallas, TX along with the Youth Literary Award. International Braille Essay Contest - Cash Prizes To Be Won
The Asia Pacific region of World Blind Union is holding a Braille Essay Contest. Sponsored by Onkyo Corporation Ltd and the Braille Mainichi Newspaper (Japan), there are great prizes to be won. The competition is open to member countries of WBU in the Asia Pacific. The Association of Blind Citizens of New Zealand and the Royal New Zealand Foundation of the Blind are New Zealand's members to WBU. We have established a mechanism called the WBU Forum as a means of co-ordinating our country role. The forum comprises six people (three from each of the Association and Foundation) and we are jointly responsible for promoting and running the Onkyo Braille Contest for New Zealand. All entries from New Zealand must therefore come through our country process.
Entry Criteria: If you live in New Zealand, are blind or partially sighted, write Braille, and are between 14 and 25 years of age, or 26 years or older, then this competition is for you. You can only send in one entry, and it must be your own work. Past Otsuki winners cannot enter the contest.
Topic Choices and How Much to Write: Essays that are too short or too long will not be considered. Therefore you need to make sure you write between 750 and 1,000 words.
There are three topics for you to choose from:
* How Braille has changed my life and contributed to my success.
* How Braille and audio devices are helping me to lead a normal life.
* The challenges and solutions for a blind person aspiring to be a musician.
Braille-Writing Options: once your topic is chosen, you are ready to start. Remember that entries must be written in Braille. Any of the following can be used: Perkins, Mountbatten, Braille Note, Braille Lite or Pac Mate using Braille entry. You can send your essay entry as hard-copy Braille, or as a .brf file. An electronic MS Word Translation of your entry is also required.
What to do When Submitting Your Braille Essay
You must provide the following information:
* full name (as written in your birth certificate, passport or legal documents);
* age (attach your birth certificate or a statement from someone in authority to confirm this information);
* your gender (attach an electronic photo);
* what you do e.g. student, lawyer etc;
* name, address and e-mail of the National Affiliate you belong to or the school/college where you are studying;
* your own contact details including phone and e-mail.
Closing Date and Where to Send Your Entry: Braille essays and all other information needed must be received by 4pm, Friday 20 May 2011.

All countries are limited to sending a maximum of five essays. A decision identifying the five best entries will be made in the event we receive more than the maximum number and will be submitted to the WBU-Asia Pacific Onkyo Selection Committee.
Prizes: Cash prizes will be awarded to the seven best entries received from all participating countries.
Prize categories are:

Kartika Review's The 500 Project: Does Asian Pacific Islander American (APIA) Literature Matter?

The 500 Project seeks to profile 10 APIA individuals from each of the 50 States who answer YES.
On February 3, 2011, incidentally the Lunar New Year, the editors of Kartika Review, a national Asian Pacific Islander American literary arts journal, got together with award-winning poet Bryan Thao Worra and took on the 500 Project.
However, the concept started well before February 3rd, by Thao Worra, the first Lao American to hold an NEA Fellowship in Literature. Over the last 15 years, he has worked with Asian/Pacific Islander American writers from across the country to revitalize our literary and artistic traditions, in particular that of Lao and Southeast Asian American writers. A key part of that journey has been connecting emerging enclaves of writers with more established APIA artists across the United States. One recurring conversation the writer activists have is the question of the modern audience for Asian American literature.
We are in a time when there is a vocal demand for diverse voices, and yet APIA writers are hard-pressed to find the same passionate, sustaining demand that mainstream writers or genre fiction enjoy. That presents a contradiction, one we writer activists cannot ignore, and one that we should respond to loudly, proudly, from every storied corner of Earth.
In Thao Worra's home state of Minnesota, there are over 60 ethnic communities tracing their heritage to Asia or the Pacific Islands. These communities thrive across the United States, coast to coast. For each of these communities, writers must ask: Can't we find, among all of those thousands, 10 individuals who are passionate about Asian American literature, writer activists who will express without equivocation that Asian American literature matters?
For each of the 50 states, there must be at least 10 Asian / Pacific Islander Americans that answer yes. And thus Thao Worra, joined by Kartika Review seek out those 500. Why should it be so hard to identify them and build a vibrant, amazing network of readers and writers? How can a canon of contemporary Asian American literature be built if we cannot even find these 500?
And so our quest begins.
