My partners and I are actively seeking 'China-centric' scripts that portray stories and/or characters containing core elements regarding the culture or people of China or people of Chinese descent. National Film and Development Corporation (NFDC) is providing a platform to promising scriptwriters to prepare them for working and selling original screenplays in the international filmmaking market.

The Government-run agency is organising Screenwriter's Lab 2011, a two-session workshop designed to prepare screenwriters with original Indian stories for working in the international arena.

It is being organised in association with Binger FilmLab, an Amsterdam-based feature-film development agency.

The workshop aims at improving a completed screenplay and increasing the international marketability of the same.

The first session will be held during the Venice International Film Festival in September where participants will get first-hand experience of the workings of the international film community and get to train with their screenplay mentors.

The second session will be held at Film Bazaar, IFFI Goa from November 24-27 where participants will apply their training and pitch their revised screenplays to participants at the film market.

1. The Theme of the competition

We are looking for the script for short films. There is no fixed themes and you are open to write a script of 10 minutes on any subject keeping the cost of making to its minimal. Special consideration will be on the freshness of the concept.

2. Last date of Submission of Scripts.

The participate are required to register themselves for the scripts before 30th of May, 2011. Only the registered participants will be allowed to submit their entries. Only the entries submitted on or before 30th May will be considered for the competition.

3. Participation Requirement

* All the participants have to register themselves for the competition
* Entries in English or Hindi will be accepted
* The script should be for short film of 10 mins, duration max.
* Once selected the script will be property of Tumbhi and the writer will have to sign a contract with Tumbhi for the same effect.

This unique program is dedicated to discovering and nurturing new Asian Pacific American voices for both Feature Film and Television. Winners in both the Film and TV categories will receive a $4,000 cash prize, the latest Final Draft screenwriting software, a staged reading of their winning script, and exclusive opportunities to meet with prominent entertainment executives and producers.

This year, we’re expanding ways to enter. If your script was produced as an independent feature with a budget under $1 million, you can now enter it into the 2011 CAPE New Writers Awards. And you can enter as many submissions as you’d like.

Submissions are being accepted from now until May 27, 2011. CAPE Members pay only $35 per submission. Non-members pay $50 per submission.

Over the years, CAPE has helped launch the careers of numerous writers in Hollywood. In 2009, TV Winner Aaron Ho won a coveted spot in the Disney/ABC Writing Program, and then joined the writing staff of the hit ABC series COUGAR TOWN. In 2010, TV Winner Randall Park landed a talent deal with NBC, and Feature Winner Jaffar Mahmood secured a highly competitive spot in the Disney/ABC Directing Program.

ISABEL KENNY is a producer, film-maker and script writer of Magic Lantern Films; adjunct professor at Ateneo de Manila's Dept of Communication; guest lecturer and film maker at UCLA, NYU, University of Washington in Seattle, Old Dominion University, and the Library of
Congress Asian Division in Washington, DC; author of a book on screenwriting and has conducted film an screenwriting workshops at the Filipinas Heritage Library and at the Ateneo de Manila.

2-WEEK WRITERS WORKSHOP

This two-week workshop—for screenwriters, novelists, playwrights, copywriters, and story analysts who are interested in HOW to write a story in serial form for television — offers a new approach by developing an actual TV miniseries entitled VIGAN. At the same time this hands-on workshop shows you how to:

• Develop your own story for a TELE-NOVELA or TELE-SERYE by exploring the timetested structure of the Hero’s Journey

• Define characters and their motivations by using personality systems and creating a psychological basis for their decisions and actions

• Build the plot and subplots based on who the characters are, what they want and their plan of action to get their object of desire and learn how to structure the plot and subplots with the five major plot points that would ensure the story’s dramatic development and to sustain viewer interest and loyalty to the miniseries

• Create a writers group with people who have undergone the same training and who can give you feedback in your current and future writing ventures.

• Write coverage for those who are not necessarily interested in writing a script but would like to learn how to become a story analyst or script reader in their spare time. Hollywood studios and talent agencies are out-sourcing script coverage in the Philippines and this is an opportunity to learn how it is done.

The 61st Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature (Palanca Awards), the country’s most prestigious and longest-running literary contest, reminds contestants that the deadline for the submission of entries is midnight of April 30, 2011.


Each contestant may submit only one entry under the following categories: English Division – Short Story, Short Story for Children, Essay, Poetry, Poetry for Children, One-act Play, and Full-length Play; Filipino Division – Maikling Kuwento, Maikling Kuwentong Pambata, Sanaysay, Tula, Tulang Pambata, Dulang May Isang Yugto, Dulang Ganap ang Haba, and Dulang Pampelikula; Regional Languages Division – Short Story-Cebuano, Short Story-Hiligaynon and Short Story-Iluko.

This year, the Palanca Awards is also accepting entries for the Novel category, which is open every three years, in both English and Filipino divisions.

In the Kabataan Division, Palanca Awards’ special division for young writers below 18 years old, this year’s theme for Kabataan Essay is “What is the most valuable lesson I learned from the Internet?” for the English category and “Ano ang pinakamahalagang aral ang aking natutunan mula sa Internet?” for the Filipino category.

The Asian Cinema Fund is a funding program to help activate more independent film productions and to set up a stable production environment. It supports projects in various stages and categories, from script development and post-production to documentary films to discover hidden jewels from future talents. ACF also aims to be a cornerstone in the foundation of a pan-Asian network by providing a meeting place for Asian filmmakers. The 900 million won (approximately 900,000USD) Asian Cinema Fund will be used to provide support to seven projects in script development, five post-productions, and thirteen documentary films.

SETOUCHI International Children’s Film Festival presents ANGEL ROAD Screenplay Competition 2011

PICHAY, writer, lawyer, recipient of the Palanca Hall of Fame for having won at least 5 First Prizes in the yearly literary contest, and newly-arrived from New York where he spent six months on a Theatre Grant provided by the Asian Cultural Council, announces the 3-n-1/ 10-10-10: Writing-on-Site Workshop for Stage, TV, and Film as he invites ten (10) writers, to take an exciting writing journey with him for ten (10) consecutive Saturdays, learning, re-discovering, re-enforcing and discussing dramatic writing for Stage, TV, and Film with a registration fee of —you guessed it—ten (10) thousand pesos.

Unlike other technical writing workshops that are heavy on theoreticals, 3-N-1/ 10-10-10 is process and technique oriented. The syllabus is designed to tap into the creative aspect of the writer’s subconsicous as well as to develop the formal skills needed to improve one’s command of the dramatic narrative structure. The workshop is designed to impart core skills to effectively write and pitch scripts for stage, tv or film.

Each participant will be challenged to write a scene at every meeting with the expectation that he or she will complete a dramatic work at the end of the workshop. The workshop will also give out practical advice on how a script can be produced.

Tentative workshop dates and time are the ten Saturdays from 30 April to 02 July 2011; 2-6pm. The venue of the workshop will be in the Origin8 offices along Araullo Street, San Juan, Metro Manila.

The Virgin Labfest year 7 is now open for submissions of both one-act and full-length play scripts. The Virgin Labfest is an annual festival of unpublished, unstaged, untried and untested works for the theater held in the middle of the year (June to July) at the Cultural Center of the Philippines. This festival is a partnership project of the Writer's Bloc, Inc., Tanghalang Pilipino, Inc. and the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

The Virgin Labfest is open to submissions of the following written works:

1. One-act plays, (maximum running time: 40 minutes)

2. Full-length plays, (minimum running time: 1 hour 20 minutes; maximum running time: 2 hours)

3. All submitted works must NOT have previously been published in book form; staged commercially for more than two performances (staged readings, one-time workshop productions are allowed); won any literary or drama award in national competitions

4. Works may be in Filipino or English.

This year the Virgin Labfest will choose only 1 full-length play for full production in the festival. (Other full length play submissions may be considered for staged readings during the two-week-event.)

The festival has been open to various themes and genres and has never restricted submissions favoring any specific category. While we continue to uphold this principle, this year, however, the Virgin Labfest hopes to include works that fall into these categories:

1. Regional-language plays: plays written in Hiligaynon, Cebuano and/or Ilocano.

2. Plays for children (special venue)

3. Plays that tackle or are related to Jose Rizal's 150th anniversary commemoration.

Submission Deadline: March 31, 2011. Official entries will be announced first week of May 2011.
