Call for Authors - Cultural Sociology of the Middle East, Asia, and Africa: An Encyclopedia
Deadline: 29 August 2011
We are inviting academic editorial contributors to a new four volume reference work organized by geographic region:
Volume 1: Middle East
Volume 2: Africa
Volume 3: East and Southeast Asia
Volume 4: West, Central, and South Asia
In our age of globalization and multiculturalism, it has never been more important for Americans to understand and appreciate foreign cultures-how people live, love, and learn in areas of the world unfamiliar to most U.S. students and the general public. The Cultural Sociology encyclopedia takes a step forward toward presenting concise information with historical and
contemporary coverage of the Middle East, Asia, and Africa, as four volumes of area studies illuminate the powerful influence of culture on society.
Each title comprises approximately 200 articles organized chronologically and alphabetically, addressing such academic disciplines as sociology, political science, women's studies, business, history, religion, law, health, education, economics, and geography. It is the intent of the encyclopedia to convey what daily life was/is like for people in these regions. Each article ranges from 600 to 3,000 words.
This comprehensive project will be published by SAGE Reference in 2012 and will be marketed to academic and public libraries as a print and digital product available to students via the library's electronic services. If you are interested in contributing to this cutting-edge reference, it is a unique opportunity to contribute to the contemporary literature, redefining sociological issues in today's terms. Moreover, it can be a notable publication addition to your CV/resume and broaden your publishing credits.
SAGE Publications offers an honorarium ranging from SAGE book credits for smaller articles up to a free set of the printed product for contributions totaling 10,000 words or more.
At this time the project is nearing completion and all articles have been assigned with the exception of a few entries. The final deadline for submissions is August 29, 2011. The remaining topics for the Africa Volume are as follows:
Time period: Prehistory-1400 - Ethnic Migration Patterns (900 words)
Time period: 1400-1900 - Fulani Empire (1000 words), Market Economies (Pre-European) (1000 words), Music (1000 words)
If you would like to contribute to building a truly outstanding reference with the Cultural Sociology of the Middle East, Asia, and Africa: An Encyclopedia, please contact me by the e-mail information below. Please provide a brief summary of your academic/publishing credentials.

Seeking Ancient Chinese History Book Manuscripts: Abbott ePublishing
We are seeking short original eBooks about ancient history (Fertile Crescent, Egypt, Rome, China, the Americas) focusing on the entire culture or a specific aspect of it, as well as more recent history, up to and including the present day. Biographies of historical figures, well annotated, are acceptable.
Abbott ePublishing is actively seeking authors to sign with us
Unlike many major publishing houses, and even some online publishers, we actively seek out and LOVE to sign previously unpublished authors.
New talent is fine with us. We want to encourage these new authors by bringing their work to the world through eBooks, which we believe is the format in which many people will read books in the future.
Our contract is relatively straightforward and easy to understand. It protects both the author and the publisher. All terms are, of course, negotiable.
Authors who let us produce books of original content and sell it here at our Website receive 50 percent of the online sales price as a royalty. That’s truly an amazing figure in the publishing business (both off-line AND online) but we want to reward our authors for their hard work.
We are accepting submissions in a wide variety of areas.
Please follow the guidelines below and email your submissions to publisher(at)abbottepublishing.com
Our guidelines are as follows:
* We are accepting and actively seeking submissions.
* Submissions should be in double-spaced text in a readable typeface (Arial, Times New Roman, or Tahoma are common) 12-point type size.
* A note on length: Our philosophy is that eBooks should be not a page longer, nor shorter, than they need to be. No padding with unneeded words, please, just to get up to a "magical" 200-page length. Some eBooks will work perfectly at 50 pages, but most should be between 75 and 100 pages.
* Submit entries in MS Word .doc format, as an email attachment.
* Entries should be spell-checked, grammatically correct and ready for publication. They may be further edited by us for length or content, and of course for grammatical clarity and for spelling mistakes.
* Include full contact information (name, full street address, phone with area code, and email) a synopsis of 100 words or less, and a 200-word or less biography of the author.
What we are seeking - genres and specific subject guidelines:
* Fiction - We are seeking works of general fiction, mystery and romance (no porn!) of at least 10,000 words in length. We’re seeking submissions of short-short “Flash Fiction” works of 750 words or less, for at least two Flash Fiction Anthology eBooks. Topics can be history, horror, science fiction (including alternate history, Steampunk, Time Travel, and future history) fantasy, and historical and contemporary romance (non-pornographic.) Works must be complete stories, with a character or characters, a plot and a resolution. More than one story per author may be considered for publication in anthologies. Authors may submit up to five completed stories for consideration. (Authors who are proficient in the genre, and have five or more completed Flash Fiction stories, may be considered for a full eBook of Flash Fiction stories under their own name.) Only authors whom five or more published works in an anthology, or in stand-alone eBooks, will be considered for royalties.
* Religion - We are seeking original works about specific religions, or those focusing on ancient and modern religions - especially New Religious Movements - either from a sympathetic or neutral viewpoint (no anti-cult polemics.) Works on Neo-paganism, Wicca or The New Age Movement as it relates to spirituality and religion are also being sought. We also consider eBooks on theology (Christian or other faiths) Bible study, Biblical criticism, and Biblical history. If you worship in a "non-traditional" religion, we want to interview you for future sequel to our "Secret Religions" eBook.
* History - We are seeking short original eBooks about ancient history (Fertile Crescent, Egypt, Rome, China, the Americas) focusing on the entire culture or a specific aspect of it, as well as more recent history, up to and including the present day. Biographies of historical figures, well annotated, are acceptable.
* Inspiration & Self Improvement - Books about thriving in the workplace, or as an entrepreneur, spirituality, time management, and “inspirational thought of the day” eBooks.

Call for Manuscripts: South Asia Across Disciplines (University of Chicago Press)
With support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, three of the academy’s leading publishers in South Asian studies have combined their resources to launch a major new series devoted to first books in this vibrant area of scholarship.
“South Asia Across the Disciplines” publishes work that aims to raise innovative questions in the field. These include the relationship between South Asian studies and the disciplines; the conversation between past and present in South Asia; the history and nature of modernity, especially in relation to cultural change, political transformation, secularism and religion, and globalization. Above all, the series showcases monographs that strive to open up new archives, especially in South Asian languages, and suggest new methods and approaches, while demonstrating that South Asian scholarship can be at once deep in expertise and broad in appeal. We invite manuscripts from art history, history, literary studies, philology or textual studies, philosophy, religion, and the interpretive social sciences, especially those that show an openness to disciplines other than their own.
As a collaboration among leading university presses, “South Asia Across the Disciplines” marks a new approach. Each book in the series is published under the imprint of one of the three presses, but all are promoted as part of the series, sharing in design, advertising, and publicity.
The first books being published in the series are Extreme Poetry: The South Asian Movement of Simultaneous Narration (Yigal Bronner), The Social Space of Language: Vernacular Culture in British Colonial Punjab (Farina Mir), and Unifying Hinduism: Philosophy and Identity in Indian Intellectual History (Andrew Nicholson).
Authors should send a book proposal, a curriculum vitae, and the complete manuscript to alison alexanian at aa2927@columbia.edu. Note that the series is exclusively for first monographs. All manuscripts should be complete at the time of submission.

Course: Editing Non-Fiction (National Book Development Council of Singapore)
Date: 17 August 2011
Non-fiction accounts for the overwhelming majority of publications and includes genres and subjects from autobiography to zoology. It covers all media, from books to websites, from reports to journals. In recent years, there has been a blurring of the boundaries so that non-fiction is now less bound by tradition.
Educational, Academic and Trade Non-Fiction This workshop looks at trends in three areas: educational, academic and trade non-fiction. Using sample texts and exercises, we will analyse the crucial components of a text to identify what is essential and what can be removed, leaving a sparer, stronger manuscript. Topics we will cover encompass:
• looking at the big picture — when to restructure
• beginnings, endings and transitions in non-fiction
• educational titles — a closer look at audience and purpose
• enlivening academic text — signposting, conditionals, active and passive mood
• contemporary trade non-fiction — blurred boundaries and new techniques.
Pinpoint Problems Areas
Most readers can tell when a piece of writing isn’t working. It’s a different matter to be able to identify the problem. Perhaps the manuscript is too long, or the chapter divisions are illogical or unbalanced. Maybe it assumes too much technical knowledge or, conversely, talks down to the audience.
WHO NEEDS THIS COURSE
Editors face huge variations in the kind of work they are expected to undertake, depending on the type of publication they are dealing with. The exercises in this workshop will give you the guided practice you need to work at a more advanced level. This workshop is designed for experienced editors who wish to expand their non-fiction editing skills.
YOUR WORKSHOP LEADER
Pamela Hewitt is a qualified trainer who has developed and presented programmes on editing and writing for universities, vocational educational colleges, writers’ centres and societies of editors around Australia and internationally. She has also developed online editing courses on professional editing and editing for writers.
Pamela became an Accredited Editor in 2008, one of Australia’s inaugural accredited editors. She has been an active member of societies of editors and writers’ centres, presenting papers and speeches at all national editing conferences as well as at writers’ festivals, including the Sydney Writers’ Festival, the ACT Word Festival, Style Council and the National Literary Awards. Pamela was a member of the Institute of Professional Editors’ National Working Group on Accreditation and co-convenor of the National Working Group on Education, Training and Mentoring.
In more than twenty years as an editor, Pamela has worked in-house and freelance across the industry in a career spanning academic, educational and trade publishing. Although she concentrates on fiction and non-fiction book editing, Pamela has also edited scholarly journals, websites, poetry and oral history projects. She publishes widely on professional editing and writing. Other professional initiatives include publishing The Fine Print, an independent online editing journal, and conducting five national surveys of editors. She is currently investigating ways that editors can survive and thrive in the era of the eBook and the app.

Call for Submissions: For Colored Boys (Magnus Books)
Deadline: 20 July 2011
From May 20 until July 20, we will accept essays and other writings to include in For Colored Boys. We are looking for inspirational stories centered around any one of the following four major themes: faith, family, love and work. Submissions should be between 1000 and 5000 words. Some of the essays published in the finished book will be long and some will be short. Send your submission to info@4coloredboys.com. Please include your name, email address, phone number, brief 1-paragraph bio and a jpeg photo with your submission.
Unlike traditional anthologies which tend to use established writers, we also want to tell the stories of real people (ordinary and extraordinary) who have dealt with, or are still dealing with, adversity in their lives. Of course we intend to include essays from gifted writers, published authors and well known public figures who have overcome obstacles. But we are also looking for college students, suicide survivors, and those who have faced bullying or harassment in their lives. It doesn't matter if you call yourself "same-gender-loving," "down low," "gay," "queer," or none of the above. We're not interested in labels. We are interested in well-told stories that will educate, entertain or inspire others.
Ideally, we would like to include the voices of Latinos, Asian-Americans and other people of color in this book. And we expect to include the voices of those who are straight, bisexual, transgender or questioning, so long as the stories are relevant to the purpose and the themes of the book.
Finally, we don't expect every story to finish with a happy ending. That's not the way life works. Nor do we expect every essay to deal with suicide, harassment or tragedy. We want this to be a balanced but inspirational book about real life. Your voice and your story are critical to make that happen.
The book will be published in March/April 2012.
Title: For Colored Boys Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Is Still Not Enough (A collection of writings on living life, confronting obstacles and believing in yourself)
Editor: Keith Boykin
Publisher: Magnus Books
Background:
In 1974, playwright Ntozake Shange published a choreopoem called For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Is Enuf. The book/play/poetry would go on to inspire legions of women for decades and would later become the subject and title of a hugely popular movie in the fall of 2010. While the film was selling out movie theaters, young black gay men were literally committing suicide in the silence of their own communities. It was around that time when Keith Boykin, a New York Times bestselling author, and Magnus Books publisher Don Weise first discussed the possibility of working together on a book in response to the outbreak of suicides among young men of color.
In the same time period, a young Rutgers University student named Tyler Clementi took his own life after a roommate secretly videotaped him in an intimate setting with another young man. In response, syndicated columnist and author Dan Savage created a YouTube video with his partner Terry to inspire young people facing harassment. Their message, It Gets Better, turned into a popular movement, inspiring thousands of user-created videos on the Internet. Savage's project targeted people of all races, backgrounds and colors, but Boykin and Weise wanted to create something special "for colored boys." When they decided to create a new book, the title was obvious: For Colored Boys Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Is Still Not Enough. It was almost the same title author E. Lynn Harris had once considered for his memoir. The new book responds to the crisis of youth development and suicide in the black community, and more specifically among young gay men of color.
