Call for Emerging Asian Canadian Playwrights: The Kitchen and fu-GEN’s Annual Potluck Festival
Deadline: 25 July 2011

fu-GEN Asian Canadian Theatre Company is now welcoming submissions for our playwriting unit: The Kitchen. The Kitchen is a ten month supportive environment where participants will have the opportunity to explore and develop playwriting skills through dramaturgical and playwriting exercises, professional and peer feedback as well as the creation of an original piece. The goal is for playwrights to have a better understanding of the craft of writing for the stage, expand and develop skills as theatre creators.

The unit meets on the last Sunday of every month at the fu-GEN workshop space (157 Carlton Street, Suite 207).

We are looking for Asian Canadian artists who are either emerging writers or have a serious interest in playwriting. Your application should include a brief letter of intent describing your artistic interests and outlining what you hope to achieve within a playwriting unit, as well as a 5-10 page writing sample.

As the Kitchen is open to emerging playwrights, we understand your writing sample may not necessarily be in the form of a stage play (ie: poetry or short story). If this is the case, please include in your letter of intent why you feel the playwriting medium is an area you’d like to develop. We require all submissions to be from artists 19 years or older.

We will be accepting submissions until 5pm on July 25th. The preferred method of submission is e-mail, in .doc or .pdf format. You may also submit by mail, but submissions will not be returned once read.

To submit – or for further inquiries about the Kitchen – please contact Andrew Cheng, Associate Dramaturg at andrew@fu-gen.org.

THE JURY PROCESS

The jury is comprised of experienced filmmakers, members of the local film community and members of Winnipeg’s diverse cultural arts community.

The jury process includes both an assessment of the submitted application materials as well as a direct interview with the applicants. The submitted letter of reference in support of each applicant will also assist in guiding the jury.

Applicants will submit one letter of reference from an individual within the film or arts community or from the applicant’s support community, who know the applicant personally and can attest to the benefit they will obtain from the program.

The jury will base their decision on the following criteria:

1. The artistic merit of the proposed project to be developed
2. The relevance of the project in relation to the applicant’s aspirations to become an independent filmmaker
3. Is the applicant clear about their intentions, and will the project fulfill those intentions?
4. Is the proposed project scope logistically feasible to achieve within the award parameters?

CONFLICT OF INTEREST

In the event of conflict-of-interest, the jurors will self-report this to the Chair and the Chair will record this in writing. The juror in conflict will not participate in discussions related to the applicant in question. Jury members report conflict-of-interest in the event they will or may benefit financially from the applicant’s project. Jurors can self-identify conflict of interest for other reasons, as well.

The jury decision is final and no appeals are allowed. The Winnipeg Film Group Board of Directors can, if requested, review the process and recorded conflict of interest process at their discretion.

  • The mentorship of an experienced woman filmmaker or video artist (as appropriate to the context of the award recipients proposals) for
  • A one year Full User membership with the WFG

Award recipients must ensure they meet the following obligations associated with their award:

1. The award recipient must sign a letter of agreement prior to accessing the award, confirming their commitment to meet the program obligations
2. Within one month after the project completion, the award recipient must submit a short final report to the approval of our Production Programs Coordinator, providing a narrative description of the total scope of work completed and the benefit of the award to the filmmaker’s career or aspirations. Failure to submit a final report to the approval of the Film Group will leave the project file open and will render the award recipient ineligible to apply to any further Film Group award fund programs until the file is appropriately closed.
3. Appropriate acknowledgement must be provided to the Winnipeg Film Group and the Canada Council for the Arts on any promotional materials related to the project developed, as well as on screen recognition on the completed work related to the project scope. Electronic logo files are available for this purpose.

Call Out for Reviewers: Ricepaper Asian Canadian Arts and Culture Magazine
Deadline: 27 May 2011

A review is not just a review.

Are you fascinated by the latest and bestselling book titles? Are you impressed by the range of Canadian poetry being distributed by independent publishers? Are you someone who goes "out on the town" regularly in search of art openings, plays, literary readings, and film galas, only to return home and write down what struck you most about the occasion?

Ricepaper is currently striving to expand our national coverage of books, film, theatre, dance, music, and visual art exhibitions. If you are a writer who can produce thoughtful reviews and critical commentaries that place a high level of importance on informed opinion and social context, now is the perfect time to be writing about the fascinating world of Asian Canadian art and culture!

We are seeking both experienced writers and recent graduates of fine arts, performing arts, or creative writing programs who have a deep interest in one or more artistic forms, whether in the literary, performing or visual arts. Above all, writers should have a passion for culture and be willing to work with our editor to develop meaningful and thoughtful commentary on cultural and artistic events taking place across Canada.

If you would like to join our team as a regular reviewer or critic, please include a short biographical note (less than 50 words) and writing credits and/or a CV- resume with your submission. Send queries and/or final drafts to editor@ricepapermagazine.ca (c/o Eury Chang) no later than May 27, 2011. Writers may also send samples of previous writing along with their query.
