Canadian Gharana Festival Literature Contest: Inspirations of India

Writers are invited to submit written works to be considered for inclusion in a Literature Contest to be held during the Canadian Gharana Festival from June 22 – 24, 2012. The theme “Inspirations of India” is intended to draw attention to the ethnic and cultural appreciation of India in general. Excellent submissions that celebrate the theme of India or that are concerned more generally with Indian thematic aspects will be welcomed and considered. Feel free to interpret the theme broadly and creatively.

Submissions will be accepted from those ages 12 and over that are considered as “unpublished” or “amateur” from across Canada. Authors are asked to only submit one piece of work as their entry. Submission length must be Maximum 2 pages (8 ½ x 11), and there is no preferred style or form – the submission may be as diverse as a poem, or short essay or spoken word. All submissions must be in English. Artists will need to submit by email an electronic copy of their work for juried selection by May 27, 2012.

About the Festival:

The first “Canadian Gharana Festival: A Celebration of Indian Arts” will be held June 22-24, 2012 at the Shenkman Arts Centre and Centrepointe Theatre, inOttawa. Spanning fromNepeantoOrleans, the National Capital Region will host artists from across Canada and internationally. The Festival will feature Indian music, dance and theatre performances, visual art exhibitions, film screenings, and a literature contest. Panel discussions with renowned Canadian artists and lecture demonstrations will also highlight this years programming. This inter-community festival aims to showcase classical arts from all regions of the Indian subcontinent.

The Festival promotes appreciation for Indian arts among Canadians of Indian and non-Indo origin and specifically offers opportunities for youth participation and performance. The Festival aims to showcase the creativity and flexibility of Indian art forms in our multicultural society while maintaining their traditional teachings. This will be the first event in Ottawa where artists from a variety of Indian artistic disciplines can perform, network and collaborate.
