American Centre Library Essay Competition for Students (Sri Lanka)
Deadline: 15 May 2013

The American Center has organized an essay competition for school children which is publishing in Junior Observer of the Sunday Observer.

The monthly essay topic is given under two age categories 12-15 years and 16-18 years.

Each age group is given a monthly topic related to the United States of America and are asked to write an essay with minimum word count. The students can conduct research for their essay at the American Center Library in Colombo, at American Corners in Kandy and Jaffna, or from other sources like the Internet. http://iipdigital.usembassy.gov is a very good internet resource with lots of information on the United States, its culture, history, literature, politics, tourist attractions and much more.

Essay topics for March & April 2013 are as follows:
  • 12-15 years: What lessons can today’s women learn from Rosa Parks, who is known as the "Mother of the Modern-Day Civil Rights Movement”? (500 words)
  • 16-18 years: It is well known that Hillary Rodham Clinton was inspired to work in some form of public service after hearing a speech in Chicago by the Reverend Martin Luther King in 1968. Why do you see her as a good example of present day women who has charisma and political leadership? (750 words)
Please note: The essay competition is restricted to Sri Lankan students. Please send your essays along with your name, age category, contact details, and name of the school.

The panel of judges will assess all entries and then select first, second and third place essays under each age category. All three winners will receive a collection of American literature, a life time membership to the American Centre Library and a signed certificate. Winners will be invited to attend an award ceremony at the American Centre in Colombo.

World Assembly of Muslim Youth Essay Competition (Rs.10,000 top prize | Sri Lanka)
Deadline: 30 November 2012

An essay competition on the topic 'Contributors to Sri Lanka Muslim Education' has been organized by the World Assembly of Muslim Youth to honor those who have contributed to the development of Muslim education.

Essays may be in Tamil, English or Sinhala and should not be longer than 4 pages, typed on A4 paper. The names of Muslim historical figures must be the title of the essay. The best essay will be awarded Rs. 10,000, while the second and third placers will receive Rs. 7,000 and Rs. 5,000, respectively.

The Sri Lanka Medical Association (SLMA) is pleased to invite submissions from Health Journalists for the following awards:
  • Award for the best feature article of the year
  • Award for the best feature article of the year on nutrition
Please note the following:
  • The purpose of these annual awards is to recognize relevance, factual correctness, and quality in journalism with regard to health issues.
  • The scheme is open to journalists, including free-lance journalis, from newspapers and health magazines.
  • The maximum number of times an award is awarded to a single individual is three times.
  • Medical doctors registered with the Sri Lanka Medical Council are NOT eligible for these awards.
  • Separate awards would be made for Sinhala, Tamil and English articles.
  • Articles published from 1 July 2011 to 30 June 2012 would be considered.
  • Applicants should apply personally with the endorsement of the relevant institution the applicant is working for, to certify that the applicant is a professional journalist (either full time/ part time/free-lance)
  • An applicant can submit a maximum of three (3) articles.
  • The applicant and the applicant’s institution should certify that the article/s is the applicants own work published during the period 1 July 2011 to 30 June 2012.
  • Each article should be submitted in triplicate.

Deadline Extended | Call for Submissions: Sri Lankan Anthology of Hint Fiction (Perera-Hussein Books)

A month ago, published, unpublished, casual and budding writers were invited to contribute to what will be the first Sri Lankan Anthology of Hint Fiction, based on Hint Fiction edited by Robert Swartwood. Around 100 submissions - all very well written - were sent in by the deadline, falling today. However, the project needs around 60 more stories.

Perera-Hussein Books has offered to seriously consider publishing the anthology once there are around 160 stories. Submissions will now be accepted till 15th September 2012. Please email your submission to hintfiction@groundviews.org.

ROLE

South Asian Review, the refereed journal of the South Asian Literary Association, invites submissions for its 2012 special number, Volume 33 Number 3, devoted to Sri Lankan Anglophone literature. The South Asian Review calls for papers that examine Sri Lankan Anglophone fiction, non-fiction, poetry, drama, and film.

Topics of interest may include writings dealing with ethnic conflict, violence, terrorism, and trauma; the role of Anglophone literature in Sri Lanka; the need for translation and the challenges associated with it; the literature of the Sri Lankan diaspora; the difficulties of publishing in Sri Lanka; Sri Lankan literature in relation to modern technology and globalization; the role of Sri Lankan Anglophone literature in efforts at reconciliation; and Sri Lankan writing in relation to human rights discourse, political protest, and social activism. We are also interested in critical essays that deal with Sri Lankan Anglophone literature in relation to gender, sexualities, class, ethnicity, religion, internal displacements, migration, colonialism, imperialism, postcoloniality, and hybridity.

The Sri Lanka-China Society in collaboration with the Sri Lanka-China Friendship Association, Bandaranaike Memorial National Foundation, Association for Sri Lanka-China Social and Cultural Cooperation and Sri Lanka Journalists Forum has organized the celebration of the 63rd anniversary of the establishment of the People’s Republic of China which falls on October 1, 2012.

The completion of 55 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries and the completion of 60 years of signing the famous rubber-rice pact by the two countries is also marked this year. The Sri Lanka - China Society, as a part of its celebrations of the 63rd anniversary has arranged an essay competition, open for students in the GCE O/L and GCE A/L grades. This competition will be conducted in Sinhala, Tamil and English.

In each competition the first three prizes will be Rs. 7,500, Rs. 5,000 and Rs. 3,000. There will be three more consolation prizes of Rs. 1,000 each. The Sri Lanka - China Society has the following guidelines for these three essay competitions:

1. Any student who has been reading for GCE O/L or GCE A/L by the month of August 2012 may participate in this competition.

2. The title of the essay is “People’s Republic of China is the most-intimate friend of Sri Lanka,”

3. The essay should be written legibly and should not exceed five pages of A4 size.

4. The student competing must declare in writing that the essay is written by the competitor, the college address and the private address must be given.

5. A certificate signed by the school principal stating that the competitor is a student of the school as at August 2012 and that the essay was written by the competitor should be attached.

6. The essays for these competitions must be sent under registered cover to the following address on or before Monday July 30, President, Sri Lanka China Society, 5, Sudharshana Mawatha, Nawala.

7. All the cash prizes and special prizes from the Chinese Embassy will be presented at a public meeting which will be held at the BMICH in the last week of September 2012.

As 2013 marks the occasion of the 260th anniversary of the establishment of Siam Nikaya in Sri Lanka, the Royal Thai Embassy and Sri Lanka-Thailand Society is organizing an essay competition.

All eligible Sri Lankans should submit their essays under the title of "Contribution of Venerable Upali Maha Thera of Ayutthaya in the revival of Buddhism in Sri Lanka".

The essay competition will be conducted in two age categories. The first category between 10 - 18 years (1000 - 1500 words) and the other being the category of19 years and above (2000 - 2500 words). The closing date for submission is June 30, 2012. Written submissions can be sent to the Royal Thai Embassy by post. The Sri Lanka-India Society Shrimathi Indira Gandhi Memorial Essay Competition

The Sri Lanka-India Society is conducting the Shrimathi Indira Gandhi Memorial essay competition among the students of G.C.E. (A/L) and O/L classes in schools or colleges in Sri Lanka with a view to promote social and cultural relationship between Sri Lanka and India.

The best essay will be awarded a cash prize of Rs. 15,000.00 and a Medal and a certificate. Second and Third prizes of Rs. 5,000.00 and Rs. 2,500.00 respectively will be awarded with medals and certificates. The schools/colleges of those winners will be presented with collections of books for the respective school/college libraries.

The Sri Lanka-China Society, as a part of their celebrations of the 62nd anniversary of the establishment of the Peoples Republic of China, has arranged an essay competition open for students in the GCE O/L and GCE A/L grades. This competition will be conducted in Sinhala, Tamil and English.

In each competition the first three prizes will be Rs 7,500, Rs 5,000 and Rs 3,000. There will be three more consolation prizes of Rs 1,000 each. The Sri Lanka-China Society has the following guidelines for these three essay competitions:

1. Any student who has been reading for GCE O/L or GCE A/L by the month of August 2011 may participate in this competition. 2. The title of the essay is 'Sri Lanka-China relations in the past and present'. 3. The essay should be written legibly and should not exceed five pages of A4 size. 4. The student competing must declare in writing that the essay is written by the competitor. The college address and the private address must be given. 5.

A certificate signed by the school principal stating that the competitor is a student of the school by August 2011 and that the essay was written by the competitor should be attached. 6. The essays for these competitions must be sent under registered cover to the following address on or before Monday, August 15: President, Sri Lanka-China Society, 5, Sudharshana Mawatha, Nawala. 7. All the cash prizes and the special prizes from the Chinese Embassy will be given away at a public meeting which will be held at the BMICH in the last week of September 2011. 8. Any decision made by the Sri Lanka-China Society regarding this competition will be final.

All students at the GCE O/L and A/L grades irrespective of the age are invited for this competition conducted in Sinhala, Tamil and English.

Galle Literary Festival 2012 Needs a Festival Director (Sri Lanka)
Deadline: 6 May 2011

We are looking for a Festival Director for the 2012 festival. The position will entail liaising with the Festival Founder and Festival Curator. Candidate will manage the administation of the festival and will be responsible for sponsorship, staffing and staff management as well as liaison with writers, volunteers, press, printers etc.


Working time is flexible but applicant will be required from June-August on a part time basis and September to end of February 2012 on a full time basis. If successful, a long-term position may be considered.
