The JM Foundation for Excellence in Journalism in collaboration with St. Andrew’s College is organizing a three-day certificate workshop on Citizen Journalism in Mumbai. This is the third such workshop organized by the Foundation in the city over the last year. Scheduled for July 22, 23 and 24 (Friday, Saturday and Sunday), the programme will be held at St. Andrew’s College, Bandra (W).
There is no age, language or qualification barrier to participate in the workshop. It is open to all interested citizens following a simple registration process. Eminent experts from Mumbai will engage the participants in sessions designed to empower individuals across the country with the requisite information and skill sets that enable them to serve as proactive and vigilant citizens.
Participants will be taught how to gather and verify facts, and understand laws which impact their life and news gathering (Civic laws, Police laws, Press laws, PILs and Consumer laws). The course also has modules in RTI, basic writing techniques and technology and Ethics and Values. There is also a segment called Citizens’ Interaction with Mainstream Media, which explains how citizens can use Letters to Editor as a form of citizen journalism and also interact with the media to ensure that their problems find way to the mainstream media.Finally, in keeping with the present public debate on corruption, there will be a special session dedicated to discussing and analyzing the controversial Jan Lokpal Bill.
The purpose behind the workshop is to involve the people of the country in the democratic process, of which they are an integral part, even as they retain their day jobs – thereby making them not journalists, but better citizens. The JM Foundation has organized seven such workshops across the country taking the empowerment exercise to cities like Bangalore, Pune, Goa, Ahmedabad and Hyderabad over the last year. The organizers hope to take the modules to at least 50 cities in the next two years.
The workshop is the brainchild of senior journalists Shishir Joshi and Aloke Thakore, who have over two decades of experience in Journalism, in print, television and online journalism apart from teaching.
