Accomplished Journalists from Asia are invited to spend three months in Singapore under the fellowship programme at Nanyang Technological University’s Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information. Applications are due by 4th October 2011.
The programme, supported by Temasek Foundation and NTU, will run from 7 February through 29 April 2011. Up to 17 Asia-based journalists will be selected for the fully-funded fellowship.
Fellows will be given the opportunity to pursue their own intellectual interests away from the usual deadline pressures of their jobs. For their independent projects, the 2010 Fellows used their three-month sabbatical to investigate topics as diverse as the role of the media, free trade agreements, and Singapore’s transport policies.
The programme also includes seminars and workshops to sharpen professional skills and deepen participants’ understanding of latest trends and key issues facing journalism. For the 2011 round, a special seminar is being planned on the challenges of reporting on ethnic diversity and inter-religious issues.
Fellows will also be introduced to key newsmakers in Singapore’s public sector, business community and civil society, providing insights into what makes Singapore tick and its future challenges.
This is the third time the Fellowship is being organised. The 2009 and 2010 Fellows represented print, broadcast and online media, and came from 15 countries and territories.

The programme incorporates activities to stimulate and enhance your professional capabilities. In addition, it provides support options to ensure you have all the time to focus on challenging yourself.
Key Elements
Professional workshops
Short, intensive workshops will focus on enhancing your professional capabilities. In 2011, you can expect the following workshops:
* Media management in a changing environment;
* Harnessing online media tools in reporting
* Covering the complex: science, health and technology;
* Media ethics for a challenged industry.
Professional seminars
Informal seminars will allow you to share experiences with Singapore-based journalists and journalism students.
Visits and Briefings
Opportunities will be arranged for Fellows to engage with leaders and decision makers of Singapore institutions and organisations, ranging from government agencies to business corporations and civil society groups.
Independent Project
Fellows propose a writing or research project upon application. The fellowship programme facilitates the project, tapping on university and other resources. In apition to the faculty and resources of the Wee Kim Wee School, NTU also boasts the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies, a leading research centre in strategic and international affairs, and several other highly regarded schools.
Expectations
Fellows are expected to participate fully in the various parts of the programme.
There is no formal publication requirement, but you are expected to share your knowledge in an appropriate way, such as by giving a talk. If you produce something through this programme, we expect you to give a copy to the Wee Kim Wee School library and let the programme use it in its publicity.
Support
* Funding
Fellows will be provided a stipend of S$1,500 per month for the duration of the three month programme. Travel to and from Singapore will also be covered. No extra funding is allocated for Fellows who bring their spouse and children.
* Visa
NTU will apply for Training Employment Passes for the Fellows to come to Singapore. Those who wish to bring their families must handle their own entry permit applications, if any.
* Accommodation
Accommodation will be provided on or close to campus.
* Facilities and Resources
Fellows will have access to the library, computer, internet and athletic facilities of the NTU campus.
Eligibility
Applicants should have at least five years of working experience as journalists and possess potential for leadership and management within the profession or organisation.
Applicants should be residing in Asia. Preference is given to those working for Asian media organisations.
Applicants can be working in any medium — print, radio, television or online. Freelancers are welcome to apply if they are primarily engaged in news or current affairs journalism.
Journalists working in non-English media are welcome to apply, but must show proficiency in English through a telephone interview, as English is the working language of the programme.
Applications from journalists in full-time positions must be accompanied by a letter of support from employers, stating that the applicant would be released for the full period of the fellowship

The application materials will be reviewed by a panel of academics from the Wee Kim Wee School and experienced journalists. Potential applicants will be contacted for a phone interview. Only successful applicants will be contacted.
