Call for Papers for a special issue for the Journal of Muslims in Europe: “Europe with or without Muslims – narratives of Europe”

We are seeking papers for a special issue of the new double blind-peer reviewed Journal by BRILL on Muslims in Europe to come out in Spring 2013. This special issue seeks to take up tensions in conflicting stories about and different perspectives on Europe’s history and identity that present Europe without Muslims or contrastingly portray Muslims as part of Europe’s past and present.
Under the headline “Europe with or without Muslims – narratives of Europe” we aim to bring together a number of perspectives from multiple disciplinary fields such as history, religious studies, cultural anthropology, political science and sociology in an analysis of diverging accounts and notions of Europe over time and places throughout the continent, open as well to external perspectives. The initial question thereby is, what role Islam and Muslims have played and still play in the imagining of what Europe means.
This way we aim to direct our view at the nexus between constructions of Europe and developments within contemporary European Islam providing space both for a critical review of academic approaches and the development of new impulses for future research.
Besides empirical papers we strongly encourage theoretical papers that challenge current research on Islam and Muslims in Europe and reflect on the own position of the researchers and his or her contributions to the construction of Europe and the role and function of Islam and Muslims.
We invite papers that address one of the topics of two sessions described below. Deadline for sending your abstracts: July the 1st, 2012. Accepted participants will be notified by July 20, 2012. If your paper is accepted, you must submit the final paper (max 10,000 words inclusive of footnotes) by 20 October 2012.
Applications to submit a short paper should include: 1. Proposer’s name and affiliation, 2. a title for the paper, 3. a ca. 500 word abstract.
All abstracts and paper should be written in English.

Creative Encounters Grant: Cultural Partnerships between Asia and Europe (includes literary arts)

Creative Encounters: Cultural Partnerships between Asia and Europe is a new initiative that aims to support collaborative artistic projects in the framework of the Asia-Europe dialogue. Artists, cultural workers, arts organisations and arts networks of Asia and Europe are invited to apply.
Arts Network Asia (ANA) and the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF), in collaboration with the European network Trans Europe Halles, will jointly promote this initiative for projects taking place between November 2011 and November 2012.
ANA and ASEF have maintained active roles in fostering connectivity and engagement across cultures through artistic collaborations, exchanges and dialogues. Through this programme they aim to reinforce Asia-Europe exchanges with the objective of deepening mutual understanding between cultural communities in the two regions.
This initiative includes the following as criteria for consideration:
* Artistic/creative projects that facilitates collaboration, dialogue and exchanges between Asia and Europe
* Projects in any discipline of contemporary arts (e.g. performing arts, visual arts, literary arts, film, new media) or cross-disciplinary projects
* Projects that engage as many partners and participants from ASEM countries (Asia Europe Meeting1)
* The content should reflect the cultural diversity of Asia and Europe with the aim of showing different perspectives from the two regions
* Generate an artistic outcome with possible public components (e.g. performances, exhibitions)
* Proposed jointly by a minimum of 2 partners in Asia and Europe, one partner from each region
* Applicants should be from ASEM countries
* Projects should take place in ASEM countries.
The support for each project will be up to SGD 25,000. Selected projects are, however, expected to seek further support or sponsorship. A maximum of 3 projects will be supported in 2011-12.

Initial project proposal MUST be submitted in English through this website by 15 July 2011.
The initial proposal should include information on the content, philosophy and objectives of the project. Please download the application form and submit the form through this website.

The Nihon Shinbun Kyokai - European Journalism Centre Felowship Programme

The European Journalism Centre (EJC), in conjunction with the Nihon Shinbun Kyokai (NSK), the Japanese Association of Newspaper Publishers and Editors, invites you to apply for the NSK-EJC fellowship programme taking place 20 November-2 December 2011.
Aiming to promote a better understanding of Japan, the two-week programme will provide a broad overview of the country and feature seminars by top lecturers on Japanese politics, economics, culture and nuclear energy. These sessions will be complemented by a three-day group tour of Japanese social and cultural highlights.
The NSK will cover flight expenses of up to EUR 500 (costs over and above this amount will have to be paid by the individual) as well as accommodation and local transport in Japan.
Applicants must be EU citizens, no more than 40 years old, have at least five years experience as a full-time professional journalist working for an EU media outlet, as well as a comprehensive level of spoken and written English, the lingua franca for the trip.
The fellowship programme is open to journalists and editors from written and online media, news agencies and broadcasting companies. Freelance journalists may also apply.

1. Qualifications and Selection
The European Journalism Centre (EJC) is responsible for the pre-selection and recommendation of the Fellows. Applicants must be EU citizens, no more than 40 years old, have at least five years experience as a full-time professional journalist working for an EU media outlet as well as a comprehensive level of spoken and written English; the lingua franca for the trip. In addition,
prospective participants must keep in mind that this programme is designed to provide a comprehensive view of Japan and that they may be disappointed if they come only to pursue certain aspects of Japan that interests them. It is desirable for the NSK as well as for the Fellows that they are able to adjust to Japanese social practices and customs, as the programme lasts almost two weeks.
2. Programme
The duration of the programme is 13 days (including the dates of arrival and departure), from Sunday 20 November to Friday 2 December 2011. The programme will consist of lectures to be held at the NSK offices or at an external venue. The topics covered will range from politics, the economy, society, culture, nuclear energy and other aspects of Japan; all delivered by outstanding lecturers active in their respective fields. The group tour that follows will last about three days, during which various social and cultural activities will be planned. The main objective of the programme is to promote better understanding of Japan in general.
3. Financing
The programme provides the Fellows with a yen payment equivalent to the amount of 500 euros towards the cost of the flight ticket. The accommodation fee (breakfast included) and local transportation fees will be paid by NSK. Some reference materials will be provided. The fellows are requested to pay any personal expenses, including some lunches and dinners, though some
meals are offered by the NSK.
4. Accommodation
Single rooms will be reserved for the Fellows at the International House of Japan (IHJ) in Tokyo. Fellows should be aware that the IHJ is a dormitory-type accommodation for foreign scholars and researchers. A remarkable advantage of the IHJ is that it houses a library well stocked with over 25,000 books and reference materials on Japan that can be used by all guests. Facilities at
Nippon Kisha Club (Japan National Press Club), the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Japan (FCCJ) and the NSK will also be made available to the Fellows under certain conditions.
5. Application Procedure

Aiming to promote a better understanding of Korea, this two-week programme, held in South Korea, will feature a series of seminars led by specialists. Featured themes of the study trip will include: EU-Korea relations, development and challenges for the EU-Korea Free Trade Agreement (FTA), green growth policy and security on the Korean peninsula.
The more formal aspect of the trip will be complemented by an extensive three-day tour of different social and cultural highlights.

Ties That Bind - EAVE Asia/ Europe Producers Workshop (FVG Audiovisual Fund)

For the third time in 2011 and after the great success in 2010, Ties That Bind – EAVE Asia-Europe Producers Workshop will be organised again in 2011 in partnership with FVG Audiovisual Fund, EAVE, Udine Fareast Film Festival and Pusan International Film Festival / Pusan Promotion Plan.
Ties That Bind 2011 will consist of two workshops, workshop 1 taking place in Udine (Italy) between May 3-7, 2011 within the framework of the Udine Far East Film Festival (April 29 – May 7, 2011) and workshop 2 being organized from October 10-13, 2011 during the Pusan International Film Festival (October 6-14, 2011) in South Korea.
The workshops will bring together 10 film producers from Asian and European countries. Each producer will be selected together with a feature film project in development and will work with leading industry experts from both continents during the two workshops. Amongst a range of issues, sessions will focus on script development, co-production between Asia and Europe, financing in the two regions, marketing and promotion, and the legal aspects of co-production. The workshop participants will work together as a group, as well as through individual consultation, and will have the unusual opportunity to get to know each other very well with the object of forming long term creative and business partnerships and networks. The programme will culminate in Pusan in October 2011 with meetings between the participants and leading Asian and European funders and sales agents.
The workshop will enable feature film producers from both continents to work together in two four-day workshops and will offer the 10 selected participants:
- top level professional and project development,
- work on the comprehensive development of European and Asian projects,
- cooperation and co-production on these and future projects,
- the creation of in-depth awareness of the audiovisual market and operating conditions, legal frameworks, financing, sales, distribution and exhibition practices in both continents,
- networking between the participants and their companies to create medium and long term informational co-financing and co-production relationships,
- access to a network of producers, markets, festivals and decision makers in both continents.
Target group:
Experienced feature film producers from Asia (Japan, Korea, China incl. Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, Mongolia, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines and Indonesia) and Europe wishing to work on an international scale and to create long term creative and business relationships between Europe and Asia. Interested producers should apply with a feature film project in development stage. European producers applying must be able to demonstrate a clear involvement with Asia and vice versa.
Project criteria:
- feature-length fiction film (for theatrical release)
- projects suitable for an international co-production and looking for co-producers
- preferably a minimum of 20% should be in place
- projects suggested by European applicants should have a link to Asia (thematic, cultural, technical) and the producer should be motivated to work with / in Asia and vice versa
- projects suggested by Asian applicants should have a potential for co-production and vice versa
- producer must have completed at least one film released theatrically in the last 3 years
- 1st draft of the script available in English for the workshop

To promote the EU-China Year of Youth, a creative Logo and Slogan is being looked for. The logo and slogan will be visible on all material related to the year.
Background
President Barroso and Premier Wen Jiabao designated 2011 as the EU-China Year of Youth at the 12th EU-China summit held in Nanjing in 2009. The agreed common objective is to promote and deepen partnership between Europe and China by strengthening people-to-people links and cooperation in various fields.
Eligibility
The call will be open to those between the ages of 18 and 35. Proof of age and identity may be required. Candidates must be nationals of the European Union.
Selection criteria
The logo/slogan must comply with the following criteria:
(a) Spirit of the EU-China Youth Year:
The logo/slogan shall be dynamic and capture the spirit of the EU-China Youth Year: tolerance, solidarity, respect, mutual understanding and friendship between the young people of Europe and China. Therefore, the logo/slogan should clearly reflect both Chinese and European values.
(b) Language(s):
If the logo/slogan will contain text, the entrants will have to be aware that it should be translated into Chinese/English. The logo/slogan should maintain its design characteristics after the translation.
The slogan must be composed of up to 35 characters. It should be simple and catchy and it should be possible to translate it into other EU languages.
(c) Originality:
The logo/slogan shall be original and the own work of the entrants. Work of third parties, like photos or design-elements that have not been created by entrants cannot be used or replicated for the logo/slogan.
(d) Design quality:
Quality will be the main selection criterion. The following parameters will be applied to assess this: functionality (the logo must be transferable into different formats and applications); surprise effect; conciseness (precise and clear arrangement); suitability to both Chinese and European cultures.

The €70,000 Estoril Global Issues Distinguished Book Prize

In the context of Estoril Conferences a prize of 70,000 Euros is being awarded to the best book on globalisation. The Estoril Global Issues Distinguished Book Prize is the biggest award in the field of international studies. It is awarded every two years to books which offer outstanding analysis of global issues. The prize honours books which have contributed new and original ways of thinking and which set out clear and topical policy recommendations in this area. The international jury looks for books that offer rigorous and well defended conclusions and that are written in clear and accessible language aimed at wide audiences.
The Estoril Global Issues Distinguished Book Prize is not intended to endorse any particular theoretical analysis or policy agenda. Instead, it seeks to identify a major piece of work which contributes to changing the terms of reference of how we think about global challenges.
The jury of the Estoril Global Issues Book Prize is presided by Professor David Held, Co-Director of the Centre for the Study of Global Governance at the London School of Economics and Political Science and includes Professor Carlos Lopes, UN Assistant Secretary-General and Executive Director of UNITAR and UN Staff College, Amabassador Rubens Ricupero, Former Secretary-General of UNCTAD, Professor Michael Böss from Aarhus University and Professor Bruno Cardoso Reis, Secretary of the jury and Senior Researcher at the Institute for Strategic and International Studies (IEEI).
Rules for Eligibility
(Applicable for books published in 2009 and 2010)
1. The Estoril Conferences awards every two years the Estoril Global Issues Distinguished Book Prize for the best book on globalisation.
2. The prize consists of 70.000 Euros.
3. The prize is awarded by a jury of distinguished international scholars appointed by the organisers.
4. A shortlist of up to five nominee titles will be announced in February 2011.
5. The winning book will be announced in March 2011.
6. Eligible books must deal with significant global issues. Priority will be given to books that seek to provide both new analysis as well as new policy perspectives on global issues.
7. Books can be co-authored by a maximum of two authors, but no collective edited volumes will be admitted.
8. All books applying must be published between January 2009 and December 2010.
9. Deadline for submission is 30 November 2010. Six copies of each title must be delivered. When the books are not published in English, an equal number of printed and bounded copies of an English translation must also be provided.

In the context of Estoril Conferences a prize of 70,000 Euros is being awarded to the best book on globalisation. The Estoril Global Issues Distinguished Book Prize is the biggest award in the field of international studies. It is awarded every two years to books which offer outstanding analysis of global issues. The prize honours books which have contributed new and original ways of thinking and which set out clear and topical policy recommendations in this area. The international jury looks for books that offer rigorous and well defended conclusions and that are written in clear and accessible language aimed at wide audiences.
The Estoril Global Issues Distinguished Book Prize is not intended to endorse any particular theoretical analysis or policy agenda. Instead, it seeks to identify a major piece of work which contributes to changing the terms of reference of how we think about global challenges.
The jury of the Estoril Global Issues Book Prize is presided by Professor David Held, Co-Director of the Centre for the Study of Global Governance at the London School of Economics and Political Science and includes Professor Carlos Lopes, UN Assistant Secretary-General and Executive Director of UNITAR and UN Staff College, Amabassador Rubens Ricupero, Former Secretary-General of UNCTAD, Professor Michael Böss from Aarhus University and Professor Bruno Cardoso Reis, Secretary of the jury and Senior Researcher at the Institute for Strategic and International Studies (IEEI).
Rules for Eligibility
(Applicable for books published in 2009 and 2010)
1. The Estoril Conferences awards every two years the Estoril Global Issues Distinguished Book Prize for the best book on globalisation.
2. The prize consists of 70.000 Euros.
3. The prize is awarded by a jury of distinguished international scholars appointed by the organisers.
4. A shortlist of up to five nominee titles will be announced in February 2011.
5. The winning book will be announced in March 2011.
6. Eligible books must deal with significant global issues. Priority will be given to books that seek to provide both new analysis as well as new policy perspectives on global issues.
7. Books can be co-authored by a maximum of two authors, but no collective edited volumes will be admitted.
8. All books applying must be published between January 2009 and December 2010.

European Master in Clinical Linguistics Scholarship (open to non-European candidates with an AB Speech/Linguistics degree)

Being part of the Erasmus Mundus excellence initiative of the EU, the EMCL consortium is able to offer a limited number of scholarships to candidates (students and visiting scholars) who are admitted to the program.
The scholarships cover all living costs in the host countries. If the scholarship does not include an additional travel grant, the costs for mobility between the institutions have to be covered by this money too. Please note that a health insurance scheme for students is part of the program and covered by the participation costs.
The student scholarships are divided into the categories A and B. There is a variable number of 8-10 scholarships per academic year.
In addition to that, EMCL is also able to offer scholarships for visiting scholars. The number of scholars admitted to the program is usually four per academic year.

• letter of motivation to enroll in the EMCL program (included in the application form)

The purpose of this panel is to bring together papers that discuss aspects of the R.O.C. history from the two sides of the Strait: Taiwan and China between 1911 and 1949. At the same time, critical reflections on 100 years R.O.C history in global perspective are also welcome.

Taiwan was ignored by most countries of the world as late as the early 17th century before becoming a geopolitical object in the 17th century and a geopolitical subject in the 20th. How has Taiwan been constructed as a geopolitical entity in China, in the region, in the world, since the key moments of the 17th, 19th, 20th and 21st centuries? Is the Taiwan question still relevant to the world today in the context of the emergence of China as a global country that uses soft power to avoid raising anxieties about this new emerging role? Has Taiwan a space at all for existence, not only as an economy, but also a geo/political entity in the world?

Document Editors Needed by European Commission
The European Commission is looking for freelance editors who can revise Commission documents drafted in English. The documents cover a wide range of subject areas relating to the core business of the European Union, sometimes involving very technical issues which require editing of very high standards.
The editors will form a roster of freelancers to provide support to the team of permanent editing staff as when demand for such services arises.
Individuals as well as companies can apply, with successful candidates being placed on a list valid until 30 June 2013.
Applications close on 30 March 2013.
The purpose of this call for expressions of interest is to compile a roster of freelance editors who can revise documents drafted in English at the European Commission. Demand for such services is increasing and freelance editors would cover needs that may arise over and above the capacity of the permanent editing staff. Asia Program Internship (Brussels)
The German Marshall Fund in Brussels is looking for an intern for its Asia Program. GMF’s Asia Program addresses the implications of Asia’s rise for the West—in particular, how Asia’s resurgence will impact the foreign policy, economic, and domestic challenges and choices facing the transatlantic allies—through a combination of convening, writing, strategic grants, study tours, fellowships, cooperation with other GMF programs, and partnerships with other institutions. Brussels Forum Young Writers Award - Call for Applications (North America/Europe)
The German Marshall Fund is currently accepting entries for the inaugural Brussels Forum Young Writers Award for outstanding and original writing on the future of the transatlantic relationship. The prize is open to all North American and European students and young professionals under the age of 30. The competition is an opportunity to demonstrate innovative thinking on the issues that shape tomorrow's transatlantic agenda.

The Award will be presented to a team consisting of one North American and one European who have co-written a single paper addressing a topic relevant to the transatlantic relationship. The competition will be open to students and young professionals age 30 and under at the time of the registration deadline. Entrants are responsible for finding their respective coauthors. Geographical location of the authors is not taken into consideration. The prize will be awarded to the writers of the winning entry, not to any affiliated organization.

Entries may not exceed 2,500 words. All quotations or information sources should be cited. Entries must be unpublished work written by the teams themselves.

The winning pair will be invited to present their work at Brussels Forum 2011 (please visit www.brusselsforum.org), GMF's annual flagship event for high-level leaders in the field of politics, business, and ideas. All costs will be covered. The German Marshall Fund will also publish the successful entry. In addition, each writer will receive a €2,500 award.
SELECTION COMMITTEE
An international jury will identify the best entry and ensure that it meets eligibility requirements. The jury's decision is binding and final, and entries will not be returned.

Fact or fiction – both are welcome in the writing competition run in 2010 by the British Czech and Slovak Association. A first prize of £300 and a second prize of £100 will be awarded to the best 1,500 to 2,000-word pieces of original writing in English on the links between Britain and the Czech/Slovak Republics, or describing society in transition in the Republics since 1989. Topics can include history, politics, the sciences, economics, the arts or literature.
The writer of this year's winning entry will be presented with the prize at the BCSA’s annual dinner in London in November 2010. The piece will be published in the December 2010 issue of the British Czech and Slovak Review.
Submissions are invited from individuals of any age, nationality or educational background. Entrants do not need to be members of the BCSA.
Entry is free. Entries should be received by 31 July 2010. An author may submit any number of entries. The competition will be judged by a panel of experts. The writer of the prize-winning entry will be notified by 30 September 2010.
Entries should be submitted by post to the BCSA Prize Administrator, 24 Ferndale, Tunbridge Wells, Kent, TN2 3NS, England, or by e-mail to prize@bcsa.co.uk.

La Muse provides a space where artists and writers can work in a peaceful, isolated and inspiring setting. We have hosted poets, novelists, non-fiction writers, journalists, screenwriters, painters, visual artists, photographers, chefs, composers and directors, among others. Rooms are available to barters, recipients of fellowships and grants, and to individuals who apply directly through La Muse.
