Journalists in Sub-Saharan Africa, Pakistan and the Gulf States have a chance to win a trip to the United States or cash prizes as part of three regional competitions to recognize the best media coverage of vaccines and immunizations.

Stories published or broadcast in Sub-Saharan Africa, Pakistan and the Gulf States between March 15 and May 15, 2013, which includes World Immunization Week (April 24-30), will qualify for the regional contests. The deadline for submitting stories is May 20, 2013.

Each top winner will receive a cash prize and a two-week study tour to the United States.

Entries must relate to diseases that are preventable or treatable with vaccines, such as polio, measles and pneumonia. Possible topics include discovery of new vaccines, testing of vaccines, public attitudes toward vaccination, innovative approaches to delivery of vaccines, or the efficacy or failure of vaccination campaigns.

The program is administered by the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) in Washington, D.C., in partnership with the African Health Journalists Association and the Arab Media Forum.

Journalists working in each region for print, broadcast or online media qualify. The contest also is open to affiliated freelance journalists. Submitted work must have appeared in a media outlets based in each region or distributed mainly in the region. Submissions may be made in English, Arabic (Gulf), Urdu (Pakistan), or English, French, Portuguese or Amharic (Africa). Submissions in other languages must include an English translation.

CRITERIA:

• Entries may include feature articles, in-depth, investigative or explanatory stories, multimedia reports, documentaries or discussion programs.
• Stories must be well-researched and well-written or presented, and we encourage stories that use data, mapping and/or citizen voices to support their coverage.
• We are especially looking for stories that use innovative tools and techniques to engage or reach the public, such as Facebook chats, Twitter feeds, or the use of text messaging to solicit citizen reports on the spread of preventable diseases.
• Applicants may submit more than one entry.

The deadline for submitting stories for each regional contest is May 20. Winners will be announced on July 1, 2013. Please post stories you enter on Twitter and use the hashtag #vaccinestory.

Pakistan Post, in a joint move with the Universal Postal Union, is holding its 42nd Letter Writing Competition for Young Peoples. The theme of the competition this year is "Why is Water Precious?"

A prize money of Rs.35,000 will be awarded to the top three placers. The best letter will be sent to the Universal Posttal Union, where a jury set up by UNESCO will select the over-all international winners who will receive gold, silver, and bronze medals as well as albums of the UPU official postage stamps.

Students under 16 years of age can participate in the competition by sending a letter in English or Urdu duly certified by the Head of their educational institution.

The following information should be provided and authenticated by the Head: (a) full name, (b) father's name, (c) age, (d) class, and (e) name of institution with complete address and telephone number. The letter should be from 500 to 800 words.

The Missing Slate serves as a vehicle for all forms of art—visual and literary—with intent to uphold free speech. We honor talent and try to incorporate as many styles and cultures. The Missing Slate began as a magazine focused on Pakistan and the South Asian subcontinent but now embraces literature and art irrespective of geography, a reflection of its team and the vision shared by everyone on staff.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS:

We take submissions in four categories: visual art, literature (poetry and fiction), articles (social commentary, op-eds, creative nonfiction) and media (photojournalism, short films, cartoons, graphic novels/short stories). Submissions are open throughout the year, but each category has its separate email address and submissions guidelines, which we ask you to respect.

As a final word, we respect the time and talent of those who submit to us and who expect a timely response, but we ask for a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 6 weeks to get back to you. Rest assured, we have received your submissions and will get back to you as soon as we can, either way.

FICTION:

Flash fiction, short stories and serialized long fiction are all accepted. We ask only that fiction be insightful and original with something to say.

In recognition of the stellar, decades-long contribution of senior journalist Zubeida Mustafa to both Dawn, where she worked for 33 years, and Pakistan’s news publishing industry, Pakistan Herald Publications Limited is pleased to announce the inception of the ZM Award for Journalistic Excellence from 2013 onwards.

The Award will be given every year to one of the country’s growing number of women journalists who is held to have rendered matchless services to the body of public knowledge about the issues facing Pakistan. By recognising the contributions of women in journalism, the Award seeks to highlight issues and individuals so that a critical mass for change is created. The Award will be a Citation accompanied by a cash prize of Rs100,000/-

The aim is to honour women writers and reporters who have, under difficult circumstances and sometimes at risk to themselves, shown strength and integrity in discharging their professional obligations.

Reports on any Pakistan-specific themes are acceptable, with preference being given to those that go beyond the areas of interest traditionally ascribed to women.

RULES OF THE COMPETITION:

• Investigative news reports and news features are eligible to be entered in the competition. Stand-alone pieces as well as series (considered as one) are acceptable. Comment, research or other non-journalistic work, including that produced for the non-profit sector, cannot be entered.
• The award is restricted to reports published in accredited, Pakistan-based, English-language publications.
• Entries are invited from women who are part-time or full-time journalists with a domestic publishing house, including the Dawn Group of Newspapers, or freelance contributors whose submission has been published in an accredited Pakistan-based publication.
• Entries should have been published in the previous calendar year (2012).
• Applicants may submit up to two entries. A person who submits more than 2 entries will automatically stand disqualified.
• Media outlets can submit an entry but credit will be given to the individual author of the report.
• Last date for submitting the application is April 15, 2013

SUBMISSIONS WILL BE JUDGED ALONG THE FOLLOWING BROAD GUIDELINES:

• The submitted report is original and professionally-executed in both research and writing, and makes an effort to be fair and balanced.
• The submitted report is issue-based.
• The submission follows in every way the ethical guidelines that codify the journalistic profession, and relies on credible sources and verifiable data.
• The submission concerns an issue, or a perspective on an issue, that is directly or by implication relevant to Pakistan.
• Credit will also be given for reports concerning marginalised, deprived, vulnerable, minority or targeted communities and segments of society.

EVALUATION/SCRUTINY COMMITTEE AND PANEL OF JUDGES:

• Entries will be reviewed first by an evaluation/scrutiny committee to verify the submissions and prepare a short-list for the judges’ review.
• Computer print-outs of the short-listed reports, which will NOT carry the authors’ by-lines and the name of the publication, will then be sent on to the panel of judges for the selection of the winner. The panel will comprise senior journalists as well as non-journalistic experts in various fields.
• The judges’ decision will be final.

PROCEDURE FOR SUBMISSION:

• The application form for participation in the competition can be downloaded from http://www.dawn.com. Applicants must print out a form and fill it out in English.
• A tear-sheet (the report as published, with the name of the publication, date of publishing and name of author clearly visible) of the report must be provided.
• A second copy of the report must be provided in the form of a computer print-out in Word format on plain A4-sized sheets, WITHOUT the name of the author or the publication.
• A letter from the editor of the publication verifying publication and authorship is required.
• A photocopy of the applicant’s CNIC, or other identification document, is required.
• The whole package should be mailed to the address specified in the application form.

​The Lahore Literary Festival explores the dialogue and interface between conventional literature and other arts, milieus, and society in pursuit of literature's subliminal power to improve our social, academic, cultural, and even political, frameworks. The aim of the Festival is to bring together, discuss and celebrate the diverse and pluralistic literary tradition that distinguishes Lahore as a city of arts, activism, and generally, of big ideas. This was the picture, pre-1947, and continues to resonate in the post-colonial Lahore with its cultural and literary footprint across greater Punjab, the Indus region, and South Asia.

Nothing demonstrates this better than the classic appeal of Lahore’s cosmopolitanism that stretches millennia from being a ‘global city’ under the Sultanate in the twelfth century, to becoming the capital of the Mughal Empire under Emperor Akbar, and being the cradle of Punjabi civilization under Maharaja Ranjit Singh.

Lahore the city has also fired the imagination of global literature and thought, theater and film, from Milton’s Paradise Lost to Kipling’s Kim, Massenet’s Opera Le Roi de Lahore and John Masters’ Bhowani Junction. This coupled with Lahore’s pre-eminence in birthing new ideas, poetry and prose, manifestos and movements, makes Lahore a vital node in the public imagination, and indeed, a befitting site for a literary festival.

With a focus on ‘Literature’ as encompassing a variety of genres—from fiction writing, to history, politics, art, architecture, culture, and music—the aim of the Festival is to reclaim and employ Lahore’s rich and varied literary tradition.

Nexus: A Journal of Cultural Studies has been envisaged as a premiere journal in Pakistan in the field of literature, language, art, culture, and screen studies. The journal aims at re-vitalizing scholarly debate regarding all aspects of culture and civilizational identity in Pakistan, South Asia, and the Middle East by publishing cutting-edge research from and about the region.

Nexus: A Journal of Cultural Studies invites research papers, review articles, and book reviews for its inaugural issue. The theme of the inaugural issue is open but the authors are expected to explore the relationship between literary, cultural, and linguistic practices and societal configurations in colonial and postcolonial spaces. The issues that are debated in the papers should be of interest to informed readers and academic experts who are intellectually engaged with postcolonial cultural studies in South Asia, the Middle East and the Global South.

Manuscripts should be prepared according to the latest style guidelines provided by the Modern Languages Association (MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers). The number of footnotes should be kept at minimum and footnotes should be discursive not referential. References to published material should be in the body of the text and should not interrupt the flow of the text.

The journal follows a policy of zero-tolerance for plagiarism and publishes articles, review articles, and book reviews only after they have gone through a rigorous and anonymous peer-review process.

Manuscript Length: Research articles should be between 5000 to 8000 words, review articles 3000 to 4000 words, and book reviews 2000 to 3000 words.
