Call for Papers: 2013 Hwa Kang International Conference on English Language and Literature (Taiwan)
Deadline: 31 January 2013

The Hwa Kang International Conference on English Language and Literature is an annual conference organized by the Department of English Language and Literature at Chinese Culture University to encourage intellectual exchanges and academic dialogues between scholars in Taiwan and around the world. In 2013 the conference theme will be Exploring Discourse: Trends and Applications in Language and Literature. The conference organizers want to explore the idea of “discourse” as we find it in the fields of linguistics, language teaching, literature and cultural studies, and in the study of language, communication and texts.

LITERATURE & CULTURAL STUDIES:

“Discourse” has long been a common term in literary studies, where it can have various meanings including genre-related ones such as “narrative discourse.” Michel Foucault, however, has helped us rethink the concept of “discourse” in terms of its social, political, and cultural formations. For Foucault various discourses (e.g. the discourse of medicine or of history) are expressions of power, and in “every society the production of discourse is at once controlled, selected, organized and redistributed according to a certain number of procedures, whose role is to avert its powers and its dangers.” (“The Discourse on Language,” 1972) Literature and its related cultural practices are types of discursive formations that have been manipulated, analyzed, questioned, and subverted by scholars in literary and cultural studies. We would like to invite original abstracts that deal with theories of discourse, interpretations of literature and related discursive formations, textual analyses involving stylistics and discourse analysis, interrogations of the institutions of literature and literary studies, applications in the teaching of literature, and other approaches that concern literature and discourse.

Subject areas might include but are not limited to the following topics:
  • Literature as discourse
  • Discourse and power
  • Discourse and knowledge
  • Discourse and subjectivity
  • Discourse and ethnicity
  • Discourse and gender
  • Discourse and institutions
  • Discourse and the canon
  • Discourse and history
  • Discourse and rhetoric
  • Discourse and translation
  • Discourse and literary education
  • Interdiscursivity
  • Others
LINGUISTICS & LANGUAGE TEACHING:

Different kinds of discourse and their analysis have been topics of interest in the past few decades. The focus of this conference will be on advances and research results in the fields of theoretical, experimental, and applied discourse. We welcome papers which present empirical studies of discourse analysis and are based on theoretical approaches, including those of speech act theory, interactional sociolinguistics, the ethnography of communication, pragmatics, conversational analysis, and variation analysis. We also welcome submissions which take discourse as a framework used to interpret rhetoric, culture, collaborative practices, power, identity, diversity, etc. We also hope that this conference can help language teachers to incorporate an awareness of discourse in their teaching, which would only be enhanced by such a perspective.

Possible subject areas include, but are not restricted to, the following:
  • Discourse analysis
  • Genre analysis
  • Text analysis
  • Conversational analysis
  • Variation analysis
  • Pragmatics
  • Speech act theory
  • Interactional sociolinguistics
  • Ethnography of communication
  • Socio-cognitive dimension of discourse
  • Discourse and identity
  • Discourse community
  • Discourse and technology
  • Corpus-based analysis
  • Contrastive rhetoric
  • Discourse and English teaching
  • Second language acquisition
  • Second language writing
  • Dialogic learning
  • Multiple assessment
  • Others
IMPORTANT DEADLINES:
  • Conference Date: May 4, 2013
  • Submission of abstracts: January 31, 2013
  • Notification of acceptance of abstracts: March 8, 2013
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:
  • We accept papers written either in English or in Chinese. No full-paper submission is required.
  • Each submission should include the following information and items: (a) Name of the contributor in both Chinese and English, professional affiliation, current position, mailing address, office and home phone numbers, and email address. Call for Papers: Fourth East Asian Conference on Comparative Literature (Soochow University, Taipei)
Deadline: 1 July 2011

We take great pleasure in announcing that the Fourth East Asian Conference on Comparative Literature, sponsored by the Comparative Literature Association of the Republic of China (CLAROC), will be hosted by Soochow University in Taipei, Taiwan, on March 10, 2012. The theme for this conference is "Obsession in Context.¨

Obsession is usually associated with excessiveness or a lack of temperance. As a concept, therefore, it is by definition contextualized: excess as determined by normal self-control, intemperate fixation as determined by reasonable balance. Interestingly, the usually negative association with morbid deviancy is more than ¡§balanced¡¨ by an obverse concern with the driving intensity of obsession, as if without such animating intensity we can only be left with an uneventful backdrop of bland normalcy. Thus territorialization (obsedere: to besiege, to occupy) is inherently associated with the deterritorialization of excess (excedere: to depart, to go beyond). This duality can be used to explain our fascination with and perennial debates about Oedipus' status as a tragic hero, or about Antigone's status as a model of ideal desire.

The elucidation of this problematic of duality in obsession is of particular interest to comparative literature, a field traditionally defined by a kind of transgressive enclosure of literature in normative cultural contexts. There is enclosure because the object of comparison is necessarily situated within restrictive cultural particularities, but such enclosure can be transgressive when it becomes the ground of differentiation to escape the flatness of the larger context of globality. Instances of this shift to comparative contextualization can be found in other contexts as well. One recurrent discursive topos in Buddhism, for example, is to use local ¡§grasping¡¨ (conformance to a mundane life style) as a possible way to prevent excessive global attachment (a straightjacketing fixation on enlightenment that ¡§out-grasps¡¨ grasping).

We, therefore, invite papers investigating all aspects of obsession with a view to furthering our understanding of (1) its imbrication with the dynamics of contextual conformance and transgression and (2) its relevance to the contextuality of literary comparison and thus to the ongoing search for a disciplinary paradigm in comparative literature.

Possible topics include but are not limited to the following:
  • Obsession and repetition
  • Technology and excess
  • The allure of production/productivity
  • Affect and habit
  • Cult, fashion, and fandom
  • Obsession and the canon
  • Power and resistance
  • Obsessive love and hate
  • Addictions
  • Sainthood and martyrdom
  • Crime and conspiracy
  • Philosophical approaches to obsession
Our working deadline for proposals is July 1, 2011, and notice of acceptance will be announced in late June. Please send your proposal in English (500 words maximum) and brief curriculum vitae to complit@scu.edu.tw

Call for Papers: (Wo)Man and the Body (Contemporary Women's Writing International Conference, Taiwan)
Deadline: 1 September 2011

‘Bodies have all the explanatory power of minds. Indeed, for feminist purposes, the focus on bodies, bodies in their concrete specificities, has the added bonus of inevitably raising the question of sexual difference that mind does not’ – Elizabeth Grosz, Volatile Bodies: Towards a Corporeal Feminism (1994)

It is in order to raise the question of sexual difference that women must construct a textual space to allow their bodies to be heard. Textual representations of corporeal specificities and the various inscriptions on raced, classed, gendered and sexualised bodies have always been central to women’s writing. The study of bodily discourses and the affective responses of the body to physical environments and societal mandates are also central to feminist literary scholarship. In view of the significance of corporeality in women’s textual productions, the Contemporary Women’s Writing Association and Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures of National Chiao Tung University in Taiwan invite submissions of papers on the theme of ‘(Wo)Man and the Body’ for the fourth international conference on contemporary women’s writing, to be held in Taipei from 11th to 13th July 2012.

Papers and panels in English are sought on all genres of literary and popular writing since the 1970s, including fiction, poetry, plays, autobiography, travel writing, graphic novels etc. in any language. Papers and panels are also sought on the relation of this writing to theory, criticism and teaching. Please note that all presenters are required to be members of the Contemporary Women’s Writing Association (http://www.the-cwwa.org/). Possible topics might include: bodies and bio-politics; bodies and environment; bodies and identities; bodies and migration; bodies and sexualities; bodies and space; bodies and spirituality; bodies and textuality; bodies and work; the medicalisation of bodies; (post)human bodies.

Our definition of "film" includes any time-based work that can be burned onto a DVD, including documentary, narrative, experimental, video art and other genres.

We are also extremely happy to receive non-competition films, i.e. films from outside Taiwan or feature-length films. International directors, we encourage you to submit your films. You are a very important part of our programming, and every year we sponsor director visits and related events, which helps our community here to grow. We will be very good to you.

The entry deadline is February 28. (We must RECEIVE your film by this date.)

Rules and Suggestions:

- Films under 15 minutes stand a greater chance of getting accepted.
- Around 12 feature-length films are accepted each year, on average
- Priority will be given to films with both Chinese and English: in other words, Chinese language films should have English subtitles, and films in any other language should ideally have Chinese subtitles
- Films should be produced no earlier than 2009.
- Do not submit the same film you submitted in previous years.
- You must fill out one application form per film you submit.
- Each film should be on its own, separate DVD.
- You can send more than one DVD (and application form) per package.
- It is easiest for us to receive regular or registered mail via the post office.

If your film is accepted, you will be entitled to FREE ENTERY to all Urban Nomad events, including screenings and parties. Basically, we hope you can come hang out and enjoy the festival with us. Also, if you can speak at the screening of your film, that would be awesome!

Note: Eligibility for the competition is at the discretion of the Urban Nomad Film Fest.

Volunteers:

We need translators (English to Chinese) for film subtitles and event Staff for screenings and other events. Send us an email with VOLUNTEER in the subject line, and let us know a little about yourself and why you'd like to join our team. We will contact you about 2 months before the festival to check your availability.

Call for Submissions - Taiwan Journal of Democracy Special Issue: Media and Citizenship
Deadline: 15 March 2011

Scholars have long noted the need for a well‐informed electorate to maintain healthy democracies. Media performances, in many instances, have implications for the quality of democracies and their societies. An established body of scholarship in media studies and elsewhere has addressed such issues as media contribution to democratic governance. Much less empirical research examines connections among media, media systems and citizenship, including the rights, responsibilities and privileges associated with belonging to particular nations or communities, as well as associated values, identities and processes working to reinforce or transform them.

This special issue of the Taiwan Journal of Democracy is an invitation to bridge that gap. As many countries move toward more democratic forms of governance, the articulation of various dimensions of citizenship has import for the quality of democracies, but has not been fully explored in studies of democracy and democratization, as Guillermo O’Donnell has noted (See his lead article in Taiwan Journal of Democracy, Vol.3, No.2, December 2007; http://www.tfd.org.tw/english/tjd.php). We use citizenship in a broad sense here, including formal rights and accompanying responsibilities in terms of a nation‐state, but also dimensions reaching into often‐overlooked dimensions of citizenship—including civil, social, cultural or environmental, among others—as well as what some have termed the emergence of a global civil society, or post‐national citizenship following the spread of globalization.

This call for papers is intended to explore the interface of citizenship with media, building on other work on media and political engagement. Papers here may explore conceptual and analytical bridges to such key notions as agency, identity, deliberation, practice, civic interests and expression, or civic culture, among others. Please note this call is not region specific.

Key questions remain regarding interactions of dimensions and conceptualizations of citizenship with society, including regarding the formation, erosion or transformation of citizenship and citizens. How do media work to explore the limits of citizenship, of belonging or exclusion, of public and private spheres, of diversity among citizens, or in the transformation from non‐citizen to citizen, and vice‐versa? As Manuel Castells and Silvio Waisbord have asked, as demarcations between states, civil society and their citizens shift, what are the implications for our understandings of citizenship and the role of communication? Peter Dahlgren discussed media’s key roles in terms of shaping components of civic agency and culture; what are the observed cases of those formulations? How do citizens’ encounters with mediated content shape identity formation, public opinion, civic awareness, among others? As citizens struggle to resolve conflicts in democratic, non‐democratic or democratizing societies, how does media performance connect? In rapidly transforming technological contexts, what are the implications for articulation or realization of citizenship at various scales?

Guidelines & Timeline

Full‐paper proposals of empirical research (maximum 10,000 words, including references, footnotes, tables and figures) will be considered for the special issue. Papers should follow the Journal’s style and writing guidelines and editorial policies, which can be found on its website (http://www.tfd.org.tw/english/tjd.php). Because of deadline considerations, only English language manuscripts will be considered. The deadline for paper submission is March 15, 2011. Authors will be notified by July 15, 2011, regarding the outcome of peer reviews. Final revised manuscripts for publication will be due Sept. 15, 2011. The tentative publication date for the issue will be December 2011.

Documents should be sent via email to co‐editor Juliet Pinto. A title page including a 150‐word abstract, relevant contact information and a brief biological sketch should be sent as a separate file. Manuscripts should include only the working title as a header on each page, and all identifying information should be removed.
