Description: Unboxed Writers is about us writers and what we stand for. But even more importantly, it is about creating something valuable, inclusive, thought provoking. Here, we do not just stand for ourselves but for all those who listen to a compelling inner voice that tells them, "Create!" We are writers. And here, in this space, we put pride and passion back into writing. We give ourselves and each other creative freedom and respect. We create an environment where content generation does not entail degeneration of inspiration and spirit. We create content that we believe in and identify with. We recognize that to create is always of more value than to berate. We critique without malice and arrogance.

Email Address: submissions@jscribes.com
Editor/Founder: Undisclosed
Country: USA
Type: Organization
Description: Scribblers on the Roof was born out of a need for a dedicated place for both established and emerging writers of fiction and poetry with Jewish themes to submit their work. While there are some wonderful Jewish publications that have small sections for for creative writing (and you can find their links on this site), they are few and far between and they are not dedicated solely to the craft of poetry and prose. There are also many many fine “non-Jewish” literary publications where writers can submit their work. However, sometimes a piece may contain certain references or even words in Hebrew or Yiddish that a non-Jewish audience may simply not understand. Scribblers on the Roof is also dedicated to allowing Jewish writers to connect with one another, and support and encourage each other in their literary pursuits. We aim to bring together writers of Jewish poetry and fiction from around the globe, showcase their talents, provide resources for their work, as well as host competitions, and challenge writers to delve into their Jewish backgrounds.

Type: Organization
Description: Mima’amakim is Hebrew for “from the depths,” the phrase used to introduce Psalm 130, one of the most poignant and eloquent creative statements of hope and yearning for God. Founded in 2001 by students at Yeshiva University as a poetry journal catering to its student population, Mima’amakim quickly opened into the wider Jewish world, incorporating a larger and more diverse definition of “religious experience.” By 2003, the Mima’amakim journal had evolved from a student run poetry journal, to an independent annual incorporating poetry, prose, as well as the visual arts, while the Mima’amakim organization had created an arts blog at mimaamakim.org, and established a reputation for hosting topnotch events and readings. Mima’amakim’s mission is to assert that the artist whose life and vision are informed by prayer, learning and tradition has a creative contribution to make, and that Judaism gains from an encounter with artists who adapt the interpretive storytelling of the midrash, the yearning of the psalmist or the clarion call of the prophets.

Type: Organization
Description: The Afghan Women’s Writing Project began as an idea during novelist Masha Hamilton’s last trip to Afghanistan in November 2008. Her interest in Afghanistan was sparked in the late 1990s during the Taliban period, when she understood it was one of the worst places in the world to be a woman. Masha first visited the country in 2004, and was awed and inspired by the resolute courage of the women she met. When she returned, she saw doors were closing and life was again becoming more difficult, especially for women. She began to fear we could lose access to the voices of Afghan women if we didn’t act soon. The Afghan Women’s Writing Project is aimed at allowing Afghan women to have a direct voice in the world, not filtered through male relatives or members of the media. Many of these Afghan women have to make extreme efforts to gain computer access in order to submit their writings, in English, to the project.

Our goals include making newsrooms in the U.S. more ethnically and racially diverse and ensuring fair and accurate coverage of the Asian American and Pacific Islander community. Today, the Asia chapter has about 30 members across the region. They work for a range of media, from The Associated Press and Dow Jones newswires to Time magazine and Channel News Asia.
