Description: The Asian American Journalists Association or AAJA is a U.S.-based nonprofit organization that serves Asian American and Pacific Islander journalists. Our goals include making newsrooms in the U.S. more ethnically and racially diverse and ensuring fair and accurate coverage of the Asian American and Pacific Islander community. The Asia chapter was founded in 1996 by two AAJA members working in Asia, Allen Cheng in Hong Kong and Alan Ota in Tokyo. When Alan returned to the U.S. in 1997, Allen stayed on as president and Dalton Tanonaka became vice president. An early highlight was an ambitious series of programs in Hong Kong for AAJA members and other visiting journalists who covered the handover of the territory to China in 1997. Today, the Asia chapter has about 30 members across the region. They work for a range of media, from The Associated Press and Dow Jones newswires to Time magazine and Channel News Asia. We are a networking group for AAJA members in Asia and the Pacific and a bridge for AAJA members who come to the region or want to work here. We hold get-togethers in various cities throughout the year and offer advice and support to fellow AAJA members with an interest in Asia.
