IJP Fellowships in Germany for Journalists from the Middle East
Deadline: 1 July 2011
In 2011 we are offering for the sixth time a travel and work fellowship for up to five young journalists from the Middle East, especially from Lebanon, Egypt, Syria, Jordan and Palestine, to spend a two-month period in Germany. We are doing this in cooperation with governmental institutions, foundations and sponsors in Germany and the Middle East. At the same time, the fellowship is being offered to journalists in Germany, who can apply to spend a two-month period in the Middle East.

Objective: The fellowship is intended to enable young journalists to familiarise themselves with the political issues in Germany at an early stage of their career. This will raise awareness to the relations between Germany and the Middle East in young media multipliers and will give them a personal insight into mentality, culture and everyday life in Germany and the European
Union.
The practical part of the fellowship ensures contact with colleagues in the region, and it is hoped this contact will be maintained in future years. This is also the purpose of the alumni association of former grant holders and of an annual alumni reunion in Berlin.
Candidates: Applications may be submitted by any citizen of the countries mentioned above aged 21 or over who is working as a regular employee, trainee or journalist, for media. The maximum age is 37 years.
Duration of fellowship: The fellowship begins on 30. October 2011 with an introductory event in Berlin together with the German fellows. This is followed by a fellowship lasting at least two months with a German media outlet.
The branch of the media (newspaper, radio, TV, magazine) will be selected by the fellows, and the actual place of work will then be decided by the organizer in consultation with the fellows. There will be the possibility to extend the stay on an individual basis.
There is also the possibility of a two-weeks-long intensive German language training in Berlin at the beginning of the stay, with costs covered by this program.
Amount of fellowship: The fellowship carries a payment of 4,000 euro per person. This sum is intended to cover a large proportion of the travel costs, board and lodging. Fellows are expected to contribute a certain amount themselves. There will be no payment for the individual’s work on location as a journalist.
Applications: Applications, for which there is no special form, are to be submitted by July 1, 2011. The application must be accompanied by a passport photo, a detailed curriculum vitae, and a journalistic appraisal written by the head of department or editor-in-chief. The latter should support the application, guarantee temporary leave of absence for the duration of the fellowship, and serve as evidence of journalistic activity. Samples of work may be enclosed. A very good knowledge of English is expected. While a knowledge of German will naturally be welcomed, this is not an essential requirement for an application. Visa arrangements will be made with the help
of the organizers.
After preliminary selection, the finalists might be invited for a selection interview. Legal action in respect of the final decision shall be barred. Notification will be sent to the successful candidates by early September 2011.
All fellows undertake to write, upon their return, a report of at least three pages on their experience, activities and impressions in the country.

Herta Muller’s Books Translated in Korean

Herta Müller is a Romanian-born German Nobel Prize-winning novelist, poet and essayist noted for her works depicting the effects of violence, cruelty and terror, usually in the setting of Communist Romania under the repressive Nicolae Ceauşescu regime which she experienced herself. Many of her works are told from the viewpoint of the German minority in Romania and are also a depiction of the modern history of the Germans in the Banat, and more broadly, Transylvania. Her much acclaimed 2009 novel Everything I Possess I Carry With Me portrays the deportation of Romania's German minority to Stalinist Soviet Gulags during the Soviet occupation of Romania for use as German forced labor.
Her two books Niederungen (Nadirs) and Atemschaukel (Everything I Possess I Carry with Me) have been translated into Korean. Read the article on Korea Times.

The Nazi Connection to Islamic Terrorism: Adolf Hitler and Haj Amin Al-Husseini by Chuck Morse

This is the remarkable story of Haj Amin al-Husseini who was, in many ways, as big a Nazi villain as Hitler himself. To understand his influence on the Middle East is to understand the ongoing genocidal program against the Jews of Israel. Al-Husseini was a bridge figure in terms of transporting the Nazi genocide in Europe into the post-war Middle East. As the leader of Arab Palestine during the British Mandate period, al-Husseini introduced violence against moderate Arabs as well as against Jews. Al-Husseini met with Adolf Eichmann in Palestine in 1937 and subsequently went on the Nazi payroll as a Nazi agent. Al-Husseini played a pivotal behind-the-scenes role in instigating a pro-Nazi coup in Iraq in 1941 as he urged Nazis and pro-Nazi governments in Europe to transport Jews to death camps, trained pro-Nazi Bosnian brigades, and funneled Nazi loot into pro-war Arab countries.
About the Author
Chuck Morse is a veteran radio talk show host who currently co-hosts the nationally syndicated radio program "The Fairness Doctrine" with Patrick O'Heffernan. Morse is formerly the CEO of City Metro Enterprises, a national advertising/media distribution enterprise and is the author of several books. He currently lives in Boston with his wife and daughter.
