Call for Applications: 2013 IJP Middle East Fellowship (€4,000 stipend)

In 2013 the IJP are offering for the tenth time a travel and work fellowship for up to five young journalists from the Middle East, especially from Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Israel and Palestine to spend a two-month period in Germany. We are doing this in cooperation with governmental institutions, foundations and sponsors in Germany and the Middle East. At the same time, the fellowship is being offered to journalists in Germany, who can apply to spend a two-month period in the Middle East.
The two work fellowships each for journalists from Germany and Israel are named in honour of the journalist Ernst Cramer and the former mayor of Jerusalem Teddy Kollek and their exemplary dedication to the intensification of German-Israeli relations.
The fellowship is intended to enable young journalists to familiarise themselves with the political issues in Germany at an early stage of their career. This will raise awareness of aspects of relations between Germany and the Middle Eastern region in future multipliers and will give them a personal insight into mentality, culture and everyday life in Germany and the European Union.
The practical part of the fellowship ensures contact with colleagues in the region, and it is hoped this contact will be maintained in future years. This is also the intention of future alumni reunions in Berlin.
MODE OF PAYMENT: The fellowship carries a single payment of 4,000 euro per person. This sum is intended to cover a large proportion of the travel costs, board and lodging. Fellows are expected to contribute a certain amount themselves. There will be no payment for the individual’s work on location as a journalist.
DATES: The fellowship begins end of October 2013 with an introductory event in Berlin together with the German fellows. This is followed by a fellowship lasting at least two months with a German media outlet.
The branch of the media (newspaper, radio, TV, magazine) will be selected by the fellows, and the actual place of work will then be decided by the organiser in consultation with the fellows. There will be the possibility to extend the stay on an individual basis.
APPLICATION:
Applications, for which there is no special form, are to be submitted by June 30, 2013. The application must be accompanied by a passport photo, a detailed curriculum vitae, and a journalistic appraisal written by the head of department or editor-in-chief. The latter should support the application, guarantee temporary leave of absence for the duration of the fellowship, and serve as evidence of journalistic activity. Samples of work may be enclosed. A very good knowledge of English is expected. While a knowledge of German will naturally be welcomed, this is not an essential requirement for an application. Visa arrangements will be made with the help of the organizers.
After preliminary selection, the finalists might be invited for a selection interview. Legal action in respect of the final decision shall be barred. Notification will be sent to the successful candidates by August 25th.
All fellows undertake to write, upon their return, a report of at least three pages on their experience, activities and impressions in the country.

- The general rules and regulations are part of the specific rules and regulations.

'The Traveling' Open Call for Palestinian Writers

'THE TRAVELING' OPEN CALL FOR PALESTINIAN WRITERS
Inviting Palestinian artists/writers/thinkers traveling via Jordan to stay for an additional night/day to present their work in Amman in an artist talk at Makan art space. The politics of segregation has greatly hindered travel across the east and west banks of the River Jordan. For those in Jordan, travel into Palestine remains a dream that is determined/prevented by an Israeli visa. For Palestinians living in the West Bank, Jordan is the only exit point. This border, which is referred to as “the Bridge” is vested with political and social connotations from the last 40 years, serving both as a connection in the present and a disconnection from the past.
‘The Travelling Artist Open Call’ takes advantage of existing traffic and proposes a new way to rethink mobility restrictions; rather than seeing it as an obstacle, perceiving it as an opportunity to address new audiences, make new friends, and cement existing friendships in Jordan. The open call launches the first of many activities organized by The river has two banks, an ongoing curatorial initiative addressing the growing distance between cultural practitioners living on both sides of the river by instigating connections and rethinking shared social and political histories.

The Said-Asfari Fellowship, established in 2012, is a six month (two term) Fellowship supported by the Said Foundation and the Asfari Foundation. It is open to experienced journalists wishing to undertake research projects on a variety of subjects, normally related to the business, economic and/or social development of a country or of its media.
There is a minimum requirement of 5 years’ professional journalistic experience, but exceptional applicants who do not meet this requirement may be considered. Candidates should ideally be based in the Levant and intend to work there upon the completion of the Fellowship. Journalists from Lebanon, Palestine and Syria (resident in the Levant region or Egypt) are eligible.
Applications for Said-Asfari Fellowships are now being accepted. The closing date is Friday 10th August at 12.00 noon.

Call for Papers for Palestine and the Postcolonial: Culture, Creativity, Theory (Journal of Postcolonial Writing)

Despite the prominence of the great Palestinian-American critic Edward Said within the postcolonial academy, Palestine has often been considered ‘off-limits’ in postcolonial studies – a context too polemical, too unfashionably nationalistic or too ambiguous in terms of its (post)colonial status. Yet an increasing number of postcolonial scholars (Massad, Shohat, Lavie, Bernard) are urging attention to Palestine, not only on the grounds of its on-going anti-colonial struggle, but also due to the rich and growing body of cultural production available for analysis.
This special issue seeks to expand the place of Palestine on the postcolonial agenda by inviting scholars to consider Palestinian cultural expression and creativity in relation to the broad remit of the postcolonial. It is particularly interested in exploring the varied forms of Palestinian cultural production: literature (the novel, poetry, personal account literature, travel writing, drama), film, art, music, dance. It is also interested in essays that seek to theorise Palestinian culture in creative ways. The special issue is attentive both to the ways in which postcolonial scholarship might enhance our understanding of Palestinian cultural politics, and to the challenges that Palestinian cultural expression might present to our understanding of postcoloniality.
Possible topics may include, but are not limited to:

Green Olive Travel Writing Competition 2012: Your View on Palestine/ Israel ($250 top prize | international)

THE JUDGE: Sarah Irving is a British freelance writer and editor specialising in the Middle East, travel, and the arts. She first visited Palestine/Israel in 1996 and has worked in Palestine as a human rights observer, fair trade product buyer, tour guide, journalist and travel writer on regular occasions since 2001. She is the author of three books on Palestine, including the Bradt Guide to Palestine, the most widely-available English-language guidebook to the West Bank, Gaza and Palestinian communities within Israel. She believes deeply in the contribution that ordinary people meeting ordinary Palestinians and Israelis, and seeing the situation on the ground for themselves can make to the international movement for a just and lasting peace in the region. All the entries to the competition will be loaded onto the Green Olive web site for you to enjoy, as per our Terms and Conditions.
THE WINNER WILL RECEIVE:
The guide books can be transferred as a gift to anyone designated by the winner.

THE JUDGE: Sarah Irving is a British freelance writer and editor specialising in the Middle East, travel, and the arts. She first visited Palestine/Israel in 1996 and has worked in Palestine as a human rights observer, fair trade product buyer, tour guide, journalist and travel writer on regular occasions since 2001. She is the author of three books on Palestine, including the Bradt Guide to Palestine, the most widely-available English-language guidebook to the West Bank, Gaza and Palestinian communities within Israel. She believes deeply in the contribution that ordinary people meeting ordinary Palestinians and Israelis, and seeing the situation on the ground for themselves can make to the international movement for a just and lasting peace in the region. The Anna Lindh Foundation officially launched the 6th edition of the Mediterranean Journalist Award. The contest which will run until 20 July 2012, is open for journalists nationals of the 42 countries of the Union for the Mediterranean.
Organised by Anna Lindh Foundation in collaboration with the COPEAM, The European Commission and Allianz Cultural Foundation, the Mediterranean Journalist Award is a prestigious regional distinction rewarding journalists from Printed Press, Radio and Television in addition to New Media journalists who contribute to the valorisation of diversity values and intercultural dialogue and provide balanced and informed coverage of cultural issues in the region ranging from minorities, migration, integration and identity to religion and cultural traditions.
Given the historical social transformations unfolding in the Euro Mediterranean region, the Anna Lindh Foundation will recognize this year exceptional journalistic works on the theme “Reporting on civil society and democracy-building”.
Furthermore, an’ Outstanding Contribution’ award will be bestowed by the International Jury to a leading journalist or media institution for their professional commitment to intercultural dialogue.
An international renowned jury will preselect 15 finalists to be invited to attend the Awarding Ceremony due to take place in Berlin on the 18th of October 2012. During the event, 5 journalists, one by each category, will be announced winners of the 2012 Edition in presence of leading personalities of the Mediterranean cultural and journalistic scenes.
The winners will receive a 2500 Euros cash prize, and will be involved together with the finalists in the Anna Lindh Foundation’s future activities and events during a whole year.
Since it’s launching in 2006, some 30 journalists from the Euro Mediterranean region were awarded the Anna Lindh journalism award for having contributed to bridging the gap between mutual perceptions and helped in bringing people of different culture together .

The Said-Asfari Fellowship, established in 2012, is a six month (two term) Fellowship supported by the Said Foundation and the Asfari Foundation. It is open to experienced journalists wishing to undertake research projects on a variety of subjects, normally related to the business, economic and/or social development of a country or of its media.
There is a minimum requirement of 5 years’ professional journalistic experience, but exceptional applicants who do not meet this requirement may be considered. Candidates should ideally be based in the Levant and intend to work there upon the completion of the Fellowship. SEA OF WORDS
The contest "A Sea of Words", in its 2012 call, is being held again with theaim of contributing to the encouragement of dialogue between peoples, and exchange of knowledge and experiences between different local and international traditions. However, in the framework of the European Year for Solidarity between Generations, this year’s theme will be aimed at promoting the vision and expectations of young people about their future and the contact between different generations of Euro-Mediterranean societies.
The contest is aimed at the production of short stories whose content is related to the creation and/or consolidation of dynamics aiming to reinforce volunteering activities, one of the active citizenship elements to promote intergenerational solidarity, the evolution of values and societies, and the expression of different sensitivities and realities of young people in the region.
Literary production is a fundamental means for the expression and description of facts, ideas and emotions that can be directly transmitted to and by young people all over the Euro-Mediterranean region. From this point of view, the object is to obtain literary stories – based on reality and purely fictional – that describe different experiences of children, parents and grandparents facing the future.
CALL AND CONDITIONS
The Anna Lindh Foundation and the European Institute of the Mediterranean are calling the fourth year of the international short story contest “A Sea of Words” aimed at young people from the 42 countries of the Euro-Mediterranean space. The contest is aimed at the production of short stories focusing on the issues of children, parents and grandparents facing the future, with the objective of showing the different sensitivities and realities in the Euro-Mediterranean region, from the point of view of the youths who live there.
Participation Requisites
The contest is aimed at youths between 18 and 30 who are citizens of one of the 42 countries of the Euro-Mediterranean space.
Story Format
The short stories cannot exceed a length of 2,500 words and can be written in any of the official languages of the participant countries. They must be original and unpublished works. The short stories must address issues related to intercultural dialogue, mainly of a political, socio-cultural, economic and environmental nature.
Deadline and Place of Submission of the Stories

The Anna Lindh Foundation and the IEMed will constitute an international jury, whose composition will be made public at the appropriate time on the contest website. The international jury will be constituted by five distinguished figures from the literary and academic worlds and journalism from the countries in the Euro-Mediterranean area.
The international jury will have a maximum period of 30 days, from 1st August, to select the best short stories from those pre-selected by the national networks of the Anna Lindh Foundation. The jury will reward 20 short stories depending on their overall quality.

The authors of the 20 best short stories will be awarded with the publication of their short stories and participation in the following activities:
Awards Presentation in Barcelona
The authors of the best short stories will be invited to the awards presentation ceremony in Barcelona on 5th and 6th November 2012.

The contest "A Sea of Words", in its 2012 call, is being held again with theaim of contributing to the encouragement of dialogue between peoples, and exchange of knowledge and experiences between different local and international traditions. However, in the framework of the European Year for Solidarity between Generations, this year’s theme will be aimed at promoting the vision and expectations of young people about their future and the contact between different generations of Euro-Mediterranean societies.
The contest is aimed at the production of short stories whose content is related to the creation and/or consolidation of dynamics aiming to reinforce volunteering activities, one of the active citizenship elements to promote intergenerational solidarity, the evolution of values and societies, and the expression of different sensitivities and realities of young people in the region.
Literary production is a fundamental means for the expression and description of facts, ideas and emotions that can be directly transmitted to and by young people all over the Euro-Mediterranean region. From this point of view, the object is to obtain literary stories – based on reality and purely fictional – that describe different experiences of children, parents and grandparents facing the future.
CALL AND CONDITIONS
The Anna Lindh Foundation and the European Institute of the Mediterranean are calling the fourth year of the international short story contest “A Sea of Words” aimed at young people from the 42 countries of the Euro-Mediterranean space. The contest is aimed at the production of short stories focusing on the issues of children, parents and grandparents facing the future, with the objective of showing the different sensitivities and realities in the Euro-Mediterranean region, from the point of view of the youths who live there.
Participation Requisites
The contest is aimed at youths between 18 and 30 who are citizens of one of the 42 countries of the Euro-Mediterranean space.
Story Format
The short stories cannot exceed a length of 2,500 words and can be written in any of the official languages of the participant countries. They must be original and unpublished works. The short stories must address issues related to intercultural dialogue, mainly of a political, socio-cultural, economic and environmental nature.
Deadline and Place of Submission of the Stories
All the short stories must be sent to the following e-mail address: concurso@iemed.org
The authors must attach their personal details (names and surnames, place of birth, nationality, postal address and e-mail) to the submitted short stories.
The short stories can be sent by e-mail until:
12 midnight on 30th June 2012.
Participation in the contest implies the surrendering to the IEMed and the Anna Lindh Foundation of the copyright of the contestant’s short story. The Anna Lindh Foundation and the IEMed reserve the right to publish and use the short stories received for their future activities.
SELECTION PROCESS
National Selections
The national networks of the Anna Lindh Foundation will make a prior selection of the five best short stories of each country and will provide their translation into English. These short stories will be sent to the international jury.
International Selection
The Anna Lindh Foundation and the IEMed will constitute an international jury, whose composition will be made public at the appropriate time on the contest website. The international jury will be constituted by five distinguished figures from the literary and academic worlds and journalism from the countries in the Euro-Mediterranean area.
The international jury will have a maximum period of 30 days, from 1st August, to select the best short stories from those pre-selected by the national networks of the Anna Lindh Foundation. The jury will reward 20 short stories depending on their overall quality.
AWARDS
The authors of the 20 best short stories will be awarded with the publication of their short stories and participation in the following activities:
Awards Presentation in Barcelona
The authors of the best short stories will be invited to the awards presentation ceremony in Barcelona on 5th and 6th November 2012.
Cultural Programme in Barcelona and Gerona
During the days following the awards presentation, the winners of the contest will be invited to participate in a programme of cultural visits and activities in the cities of Barcelona and Gerona.
The travel, accommodation and meal costs, both in Barcelona and Gerona, will be covered by the organisers.

The 2012 Palestine Festival of Literature Opens May 5th
Date: 5 - 9 May 2012 (Gaza), 11 May 2012 (Cairo)
The Festival will take place in Gaza from May 5th to May 9th, with an event in Ramallah on May 5th and a reprise event in Cairo on May 11th.
It has been a longstanding aim of the festival to travel to Gaza. Since it started in 2008 PalFest has taken the form of a travelling festival – moving to audiences constrained and divided by Israel’s military occupation, establishing creative links between Palestine and the rest of the world and pitting the power of culture against the culture of power.
PalFest has tried several times in the past to reach Gaza from the Occupied Palestinian Territories but has never been able to because of the restrictions put in place by the Israeli Occupation. Gaza has been under siege and isolated from the rest of the world since 2007.
This May, PalFest 2012 will bring a group of writers, educators and artists through the Rafah crossing from Egypt to perform free public events, run workshops with students of varying ages and meet civil society leaders in Gaza.
PalFest has endorsed the 2004 Palestinian call for the academic and cultural boycott of Israel. PalFest 2012 stands against the siege of Gaza; it is committed to re-invigorating cultural ties between Arab countries, ties that have been eroded for too long. The Festival will be bringing writers and artists from across the Arab world and beyond.
While the Festival’s primary activities will be taking place in Gaza, PalFest works to retain its active presence in the West Bank. British authors Rachel Holmes and Bee Rowlatt will lead extended creative writing workshops in Birzeit with the Palestine Writing Workshop. They will also be joining Maya Abu el-Hayat, Abd al-Rahim al-Sheikh and Imad Sayrafi on stage at the Sakakini Centre on May 5th. A one-day children’s literature festival will be held during the Festival, with plans for a larger children’s event in the summer.
Beyond the Festival dates PalFest continues its educational programme through its sister organization the Palestine Writing Workshop, whose activities include regular book clubs, creative writing classes and the creation and maintenance of a library.
PalFest will be launching a new, bi-lingual website this week. Developed with the support of the UK Arts Council, the site will be profiling new literary talent from across Palestine and the diaspora as well as developing an online space for critical feedback between young writers and more established authors.

Greenhouse's 2012 call for applications for The Development of Documentary Films by Southern Mediterranean Cinema School Graduates supported by the EU in the framework of Euromed Audiovisual III is Now Open!
We would like to invite Cinema School Graduates & Emerging Filmmakers from Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Israel, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine, Syria & Tunisia to submit documentary projects at any stage of development!
DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION: February 20th 2012
Greenhouse is an advanced contemporary development program for documentary films aimed at Mediterranean Cinema School Graduates & Emerging Filmmakers from Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Israel, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine, Syria & Tunisia.
Greenhouse is supported and funded by the European Union in the framework of EUROMED AUDIOVISUAL III program and managed by the New Foundation for Cinema and TV – Israel, ESAV Marrakech - the Marrakech School of Visual Arts – Morocco, The Ankara film association – Turkey, Zebra Production – Spain and APPEL & HONIGMANN – Holland.
Greenhouse is a yearly program hosting 10-12 projects each round.
The selected filmmakers are invited to participate in three seminars in which they will develop a full international production package and a professional trailer which will be presented in a pitching forum in front of international commissioning editors, film funds directors, producers and distributors from the documentary international market.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
■ The participants must be citizens of one of the Southern Mediterranean countries: Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine, Syria and Tunisia.
■ The seminars, workshops and tutorial sessions will be held in English, so the participants must have basic knowledge in this language.

■ Eligible are filmmakers who made at list one short film but not more than two one hour films or a feature length documentary.
SELECTION OF PARTICIPANTS
A team of International experts will select a maximum of 12 projects each year, in teams of director/producer (i.e. max. 24 participants) on the basis of the application submitted, which should include:

■ Synopsis of 1 to 3 pages
■ Director's statement
■ Initial budget and financial support
■ The applicants' CVs
■ Two references from a professor or a professional (for each team)
■ Previous cinematic work (if applicable) – DVD only.

■ Applications must be sent in ONE WORD FILE which includes all requested documents mentioned above.
· The selected filmmakers will be Awarded A Complete Grant covering tuition fees, round trip plane ticket, accommodations and meals during the seminar.

Greenhouse's 2012 call for applications for The Development of Documentary Films by Southern Mediterranean Cinema School Graduates supported by the EU in the framework of Euromed Audiovisual III is Now Open!
We would like to invite Cinema School Graduates & Emerging Filmmakers from Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Israel, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine, Syria & Tunisia to submit documentary projects at any stage of development!

Greenhouse is an advanced contemporary development program for documentary films aimed at Mediterranean Cinema School Graduates & Emerging Filmmakers from Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Israel, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine, Syria & Tunisia.
Greenhouse is supported and funded by the European Union in the framework of EUROMED AUDIOVISUAL III program and managed by the New Foundation for Cinema and TV – Israel, ESAV Marrakech - the Marrakech School of Visual Arts – Morocco, The Ankara film association – Turkey, Zebra Production – Spain and APPEL & HONIGMANN – Holland.
Greenhouse is a yearly program hosting 10-12 projects each round.
The selected filmmakers are invited to participate in three seminars in which they will develop a full international production package and a professional trailer which will be presented in a pitching forum in front of international commissioning editors, film funds directors, producers and distributors from the documentary international market.
In its 6 years of activity, Greenhouse has achieved exceptional success and has become a leading organization for documentary filmmaking internationally.
Greenhouse is working with leading forces from the international audiovisual sector, commissioning editors, film funds directors, producers, distributors, TV stations and film festivals from all over the world– The Sundance Institute, Jan Vrijman Fund (IDFA), ARTE/ZDF, ITVS, Channel 4, BBC Worldwide, World Cinema Fund, P.O.V, MDR Germany to name a few.
In its six years of activity14 films were completed and won prestigious awards in international film festival; 92 projects and 122 filmmakers participated from 9 Southern Mediterranean countries.

Call for Submissions: An Anthology for the People of Gaza/ Occupied Palestine
Deadline: 1 September 2011
COMPASSION: AN ANTHOLOGY IN SUPPORT OF THE PEOPLE OF GAZA & OCCUPIED PALESTINE
You are invited to contribute poems, essays, stories, songs, whatever short form you like, to an anthology gathered in support of the people of Gaza and Occupied Palestine. This project is intended to share information about the situation of the people of Gaza and the occupied Palestinian territories, both directly and through exploring the parallel situations and experiences of other people and nations.
Please send up to three pages of work, in any genre. For longer work, please submit an excerpt of three pages, with a description of the full work including number of pages. An abstract is also acceptable.
Our intent in pursuing this project is to relieve the sense of isolation and neglect that results from the long term and increasingly brutal conduct “for security reasons” that the people of Gaza endure.
The creation of a new homeland on an existing homeland has parallels in many different lands. We invite you to share work that explores your experiences and responses.
