Thousands of young communicators are graduated every year into an uncertain job market, possessing various skills levels, and lacking career focus. Communications programs are among the most popular majors at universities, especially for women, and are often the largest program in schools. The Anna Lindh Foundation officially launched the 6th edition of the Mediterranean Journalist Award. The contest which will run until 20 July 2012, is open for journalists nationals of the 42 countries of the Union for the Mediterranean.
Organised by Anna Lindh Foundation in collaboration with the COPEAM, The European Commission and Allianz Cultural Foundation, the Mediterranean Journalist Award is a prestigious regional distinction rewarding journalists from Printed Press, Radio and Television in addition to New Media journalists who contribute to the valorisation of diversity values and intercultural dialogue and provide balanced and informed coverage of cultural issues in the region ranging from minorities, migration, integration and identity to religion and cultural traditions.
Given the historical social transformations unfolding in the Euro Mediterranean region, the Anna Lindh Foundation will recognize this year exceptional journalistic works on the theme “Reporting on civil society and democracy-building”.
Furthermore, an’ Outstanding Contribution’ award will be bestowed by the International Jury to a leading journalist or media institution for their professional commitment to intercultural dialogue.
An international renowned jury will preselect 15 finalists to be invited to attend the Awarding Ceremony due to take place in Berlin on the 18th of October 2012. During the event, 5 journalists, one by each category, will be announced winners of the 2012 Edition in presence of leading personalities of the Mediterranean cultural and journalistic scenes.
The winners will receive a 2500 Euros cash prize, and will be involved together with the finalists in the Anna Lindh Foundation’s future activities and events during a whole year.
Since it’s launching in 2006, some 30 journalists from the Euro Mediterranean region were awarded the Anna Lindh journalism award for having contributed to bridging the gap between mutual perceptions and helped in bringing people of different culture together .

SEA OF WORDS
The contest "A Sea of Words", in its 2012 call, is being held again with theaim of contributing to the encouragement of dialogue between peoples, and exchange of knowledge and experiences between different local and international traditions. However, in the framework of the European Year for Solidarity between Generations, this year’s theme will be aimed at promoting the vision and expectations of young people about their future and the contact between different generations of Euro-Mediterranean societies.
The contest is aimed at the production of short stories whose content is related to the creation and/or consolidation of dynamics aiming to reinforce volunteering activities, one of the active citizenship elements to promote intergenerational solidarity, the evolution of values and societies, and the expression of different sensitivities and realities of young people in the region.
Literary production is a fundamental means for the expression and description of facts, ideas and emotions that can be directly transmitted to and by young people all over the Euro-Mediterranean region. From this point of view, the object is to obtain literary stories – based on reality and purely fictional – that describe different experiences of children, parents and grandparents facing the future.
CALL AND CONDITIONS
The Anna Lindh Foundation and the European Institute of the Mediterranean are calling the fourth year of the international short story contest “A Sea of Words” aimed at young people from the 42 countries of the Euro-Mediterranean space. The contest is aimed at the production of short stories focusing on the issues of children, parents and grandparents facing the future, with the objective of showing the different sensitivities and realities in the Euro-Mediterranean region, from the point of view of the youths who live there.
Participation Requisites
The contest is aimed at youths between 18 and 30 who are citizens of one of the 42 countries of the Euro-Mediterranean space.
Story Format
The short stories cannot exceed a length of 2,500 words and can be written in any of the official languages of the participant countries. They must be original and unpublished works. The short stories must address issues related to intercultural dialogue, mainly of a political, socio-cultural, economic and environmental nature.
Deadline and Place of Submission of the Stories
All the short stories must be sent to the following e-mail address: concurso@iemed.org
The authors must attach their personal details (names and surnames, place of birth, nationality, postal address and e-mail) to the submitted short stories.
The short stories can be sent by e-mail until:
12 midnight on 30th June 2012.
Participation in the contest implies the surrendering to the IEMed and the Anna Lindh Foundation of the copyright of the contestant’s short story. The Anna Lindh Foundation and the IEMed reserve the right to publish and use the short stories received for their future activities.
SELECTION PROCESS
National Selections
The national networks of the Anna Lindh Foundation will make a prior selection of the five best short stories of each country and will provide their translation into English. These short stories will be sent to the international jury.
International Selection
The Anna Lindh Foundation and the IEMed will constitute an international jury, whose composition will be made public at the appropriate time on the contest website. The international jury will be constituted by five distinguished figures from the literary and academic worlds and journalism from the countries in the Euro-Mediterranean area.
The international jury will have a maximum period of 30 days, from 1st August, to select the best short stories from those pre-selected by the national networks of the Anna Lindh Foundation. The jury will reward 20 short stories depending on their overall quality.
AWARDS
The authors of the 20 best short stories will be awarded with the publication of their short stories and participation in the following activities:
Awards Presentation in Barcelona
The authors of the best short stories will be invited to the awards presentation ceremony in Barcelona on 5th and 6th November 2012.
Cultural Programme in Barcelona and Gerona
During the days following the awards presentation, the winners of the contest will be invited to participate in a programme of cultural visits and activities in the cities of Barcelona and Gerona.
The travel, accommodation and meal costs, both in Barcelona and Gerona, will be covered by the organisers.

Call for Essays: 29th International Competitions of Holy Quran

The Holy Quran is the Divine Book and the unrivaled and insurmountable miracle of Allah the Almighty, brought by the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
So far 14 centuries have passed and nobody could have challenged its sublime language and style. The authenticity of its contents has shed light for the mankind, especially for its devout and ardent followers.
The brilliant verses of the Quran contain what is necessary for the felicity of the mankind. Therefore, the mankind has been in debt to the teachings of the Holy Quran, for it contains the ways to reach full development and spiritual proximity to the Almighty Allah. In the light of this capacity, the Quran exegetes and researchers have made extensive research to find out more about the solutions offered for the crisis of the mankind, past and present. In view of this capacity, the cultural division of Iranian endowments & charity affairs organization and the University of Quran Sciences and Knowledge (based at Qom) have decided to schedule a conference for upgrading the echelon of cultural enrichment on an international level through holding the 29th International competitions of Holy Quran. The sessions held will deal with articles submitted for participation in the competition. It is hoped that such contributions will lead to exploring more so-far-hidden aspects of the miracle of the Holy Quran. WRITING STRUCTURE/FORMATTING
The Structure of Writing Essays for 29th International Competitions of Holy Quran
1- The structure of essay should follow: title, abstract, key words, introduction, main body text, conclusion, endnote (if there is), and references.
2- At the end of any quoted sentences should mention to the reference in a parenthesis as: (name and sure name of the author, published year, volume, page).
Note 1: repeated references should mention as the same first time. Do not use words like Ibid, opt …
Note 2: If there is more than a works for an author, specify it by alphabetical letters.
3- Additional explanations and proper names or expressions should come at the end of main body text titled endnote (references here would be as the same main body text that noted above).
4- References should sort based on alphabetical arrangement as:
• Book: sure name and first name (published year), title, translator (if there is), publication location, publisher, publishing number, volume.
• Essay: sure name and first name (published year), title, the name of journal, volume.
5- Abstract should contain 300 words including: JEL classification, title, subject, methodology of research and its most consequences, key words (utmost 10 words)
• Papers should select in a form of with margins: top 2cm, bottom 2.5cm, right and left 2cm.

Therefore, the mankind has been in debt to the teachings of the Holy Quran, for it contains the ways to reach full development and spiritual proximity to the Almighty Allah. In the light of this capacity, the Quran exegetes and researchers have made extensive research to find out more about the solutions offered for the crisis of the mankind, past and present. In view of this capacity, the cultural division of Iranian endowments & charity affairs organization and the University of Quran Sciences and Knowledge (based at Qom) have decided to schedule a conference for upgrading the echelon of cultural enrichment on an international level through holding the 29th International competitions of Holy Quran. The sessions held will deal with articles submitted for participation in the competition. It is hoped that such contributions will lead to exploring more so-far-hidden aspects of the miracle of the Holy Quran. WRITING STRUCTURE/FORMATTING
The Structure of Writing Essays for 29th International Competitions of Holy Quran
1- The structure of essay should follow: title, abstract, key words, introduction, main body text, conclusion, endnote (if there is), and references.
2- At the end of any quoted sentences should mention to the reference in a parenthesis as: (name and sure name of the author, published year, volume, page).
Note 1: repeated references should mention as the same first time. Do not use words like Ibid, opt …
Note 2: If there is more than a works for an author, specify it by alphabetical letters.
3- Additional explanations and proper names or expressions should come at the end of main body text titled endnote (references here would be as the same main body text that noted above).
4- References should sort based on alphabetical arrangement as:
• Book: sure name and first name (published year), title, translator (if there is), publication location, publisher, publishing number, volume.
• Essay: sure name and first name (published year), title, the name of journal, volume.
5- Abstract should contain 300 words including: JEL classification, title, subject, methodology of research and its most consequences, key words (utmost 10 words)
• Papers should select in a form of with margins: top 2cm, bottom 2.5cm, right and left 2cm.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
■ The participants must be citizens of one of the Southern Mediterranean countries: Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine, Syria and Tunisia.
■ The seminars, workshops and tutorial sessions will be held in English, so the participants must have basic knowledge in this language.
■ Each team (director and producer) will have to participate in a full series of three seminars within a year.
■ The project submitted may be in any stage of development, including initial footage.
■ Applicant may act as a director-producer of a project.
■ Eligible are filmmakers who made at list one short film but not more than two one hour films or a feature length documentary.
SELECTION OF PARTICIPANTS
A team of International experts will select a maximum of 12 projects each year, in teams of director/producer (i.e. max. 24 participants) on the basis of the application submitted, which should include:

Calling all Mediterranean Food Journalists/ Bloggers: 2011 K. Dun Gifford Journalism Award

Back in 1990, food enthusiast and advocate K. Dun Gifford started a nonprofit educational organization called Oldways to change the way people eat. He believed that positive and practical solutions, grounded in science, traditions and delicious foods and drinks, would help address the threatening tsunami of chronic diseases.
Gifford invited others intrigued by his vision – scientists, chefs, restaurateurs, cookbook authors, and journalists -- to join him at the Oldways Table to address this important challenge. By documenting and educating others about the healthy “old ways,” Oldways and its partners have made strides toward changing the way people eat.
As a tribute to our founder and visionary who died in May 2010, Oldways announces the K. Dun Gifford Journalism Award, an annual prize to recognize and honor the important role of communications in changing the way people eat.
While journalism has changed in the past two decades with media consolidations, entry into the digital age, the advent of blogs and more, its influence on educating people everywhere about the importance of seeking out the joys and pleasures of good food and drinks is stronger than ever.
The Grand Prize Winner of the Award, selected by a jury including journalists Mimi Sheraton, Judith Weinraub and David Rosengarten, plus Dun’s daughter, Apple Gifford, and Oldways president Sara Baer-Sinnott, will receive a weeklong, all expense paid trip to a region of the world selected by Oldways and reflected in each year’s rotating subject focus.
The 2011 winner will visit the beautiful Mediterranean Region where he or she is free to explore the culture, food, and atmosphere of the location freely, with no expectations or assignments.

* The competition is open to all reporters (print, online & broadcast), freelancers and bloggers.

o Must have been published or aired during the period from January 1, 2010 through September 30, 2011.
o Must be related to this year's selected subject matter. The inaugural 2011 K. Dun Gifford Journalism Award will celebrate the Mediterranean Diet. Anna Lindh Mediterranean Journalist Award 2011 (eligible Asian countries: Jordan, Israel, Palestine, Syria)

Journalists today are facing the challenge of reporting on the rapid transformation taking place across our region from once mainly homogenous societies to vibrant multi-cultural and multi-religious communities. It is in this context that the Anna Lindh Mediterranean Journalist Award was launched in 2006 by the Anna Lindh Foundation to promote and recognize the positive role played by journalists in reporting on issues of cultural diversity and providing balanced and informed coverage beyond the headline of “clash” of civilizations.
This leading regional Award aims at rewarding exceptional journalistic productions, contributing to a better understanding of the diversity of cultures in the Euro-Mediterranean region as well as promoting the positive role played by journalists in providing balanced and informed coverage on cultural issues in the region.
Submitted works should tackle intercultural issues between and within Euro-Mediterranean societies, ranging from minorities, migration, integration and identity to religion and cultural traditions.
The Anna Lindh Journalist Award 2011 is now launched
The 2011 Edition of the Anna Lindh Journalist Award was officially launched on the 6th of April during the Arab-West Media Dialogue Forum, an international event which took place at the League of Arab States Headquarters in Cairo. The event was inaugurated by Amre Moussa (Secretary General of the Arab League), André Azoulay (President of the Anna Lindh Foundation), Jorge Sampaio (UN High Level Representative for the Alliance of Civilizations), and brought together around 150 media leaders, opinion-makers and academic experts.
The Categories
Building on the success of the success of the Mediterranean Journalist Award, the 2011 edition will be launched for the following categories:
1. Press Category:
- All articles published in printed newspapers/magazines/periodicals
- Articles must be written in a journalistic style.
- Academic papers will not be accepted.
2. Online Media Category:
-All written or audio-visual materials published via the Internet, particularly material created by journalists.
- Blogs and other emerging forms of online communication are acknowledged as part of the online media landscape and online journalism to the extent that the content is produced in a journalistic style.
3. Radio Category:
- Entries can include interviews, documentaries, panel discussions, or reports
- Entries must not exceed a maximum length of 45 minutes.
4. TV Category:
- Entries can include reportages, interviews, documentaries, panel discussions, or news stories.
- Entries must not exceed a maximum length of 45 minutes.
5. Special Award for “Social Change and Democracy”:
In response to the historical social transformation in the Euromed region, and particularly in Tunisia and Cairo, the Anna Lindh Foundation will recognize this year exceptional journalistic works on the theme ‘The role of civil society in social change’.
In addition, a life-time achievement award will be bestowed each year by the International Jury to a leading journalist or media institution for their professional commitment to intercultural dialogue
The competition is open to journalists who are nationals of one of the 43 countries of the Union for the Mediterranean. The journalistic work should have been produced between 1st of July 2010 and 15th of July 2011. Priority will be given to young journalists.
Guidelines for Applicants
Nine points to have in mind while submitting your media works for the 2011 Edition of the Anna Lindh Journalist Award:
1. The competition is open to citizens of the 43 countries* of the Union for the Mediterranean. Young journalists in particular are highly encouraged to apply.
2. All submissions must have been published / broadcasted by media outlets from 1 July 2010 to 15 July 2011.
3. The name of the author and date of publication or broadcast should be clearly indicated on all items submitted (print, on-line, radio and TV).
4. The deadline for submissions is 15 July 2011.
5. Journalistic works may be submitted in any language, but must be accompanied with a complete translation/script in English or French.
6. Each participant may submit up to three entries.

An International Jury composed of Euromed experts media professionals will examine the preselected journalistic items and propose a list of five prize-winners.
The Jury will evaluate the preselected items the following criteria:
1. Promotion of Cultural Dialogue
2. Originality of the approach
3. Richness of information and professional quality
4. Language and Presentation

Journalists today are facing the challenge of reporting on the rapid transformation taking place across our region from once mainly homogenous societies to vibrant multi-cultural and multi-religious communities. It is in this context that the Anna Lindh Mediterranean Journalist Award was launched in 2006 by the Anna Lindh Foundation to promote and recognize the positive role played by journalists in reporting on issues of cultural diversity and providing balanced and informed coverage beyond the headline of “clash” of civilizations.
This leading regional Award aims at rewarding exceptional journalistic productions, contributing to a better understanding of the diversity of cultures in the Euro-Mediterranean region as well as promoting the positive role played by journalists in providing balanced and informed coverage on cultural issues in the region.
Submitted works should tackle intercultural issues between and within Euro-Mediterranean societies, ranging from minorities, migration, integration and identity to religion and cultural traditions.
The Anna Lindh Journalist Award 2011 is now launched
The 2011 Edition of the Anna Lindh Journalist Award was officially launched on the 6th of April during the Arab-West Media Dialogue Forum, an international event which took place at the League of Arab States Headquarters in Cairo. The event was inaugurated by Amre Moussa (Secretary General of the Arab League), André Azoulay (President of the Anna Lindh Foundation), Jorge Sampaio (UN High Level Representative for the Alliance of Civilizations), and brought together around 150 media leaders, opinion-makers and academic experts.
The Categories
Building on the success of the success of the Mediterranean Journalist Award, the 2011 edition will be launched for the following categories:
1. Press Category:
- All articles published in printed newspapers/magazines/periodicals
- Articles must be written in a journalistic style.
- Academic papers will not be accepted.
2. Online Media Category:
-All written or audio-visual materials published via the Internet, particularly material created by journalists.
- Blogs and other emerging forms of online communication are acknowledged as part of the online media landscape and online journalism to the extent that the content is produced in a journalistic style.
3. Radio Category:
- Entries can include interviews, documentaries, panel discussions, or reports
- Entries must not exceed a maximum length of 45 minutes.
4. TV Category:
- Entries can include reportages, interviews, documentaries, panel discussions, or news stories.
- Entries must not exceed a maximum length of 45 minutes.
5. Special Award for “Social Change and Democracy”:
In response to the historical social transformation in the Euromed region, and particularly in Tunisia and Cairo, the Anna Lindh Foundation will recognize this year exceptional journalistic works on the theme ‘The role of civil society in social change’.
In addition, a life-time achievement award will be bestowed each year by the International Jury to a leading journalist or media institution for their professional commitment to intercultural dialogue
The competition is open to journalists who are nationals of one of the 43 countries of the Union for the Mediterranean. The journalistic work should have been produced between 1st of July 2010 and 15th of July 2011. Priority will be given to young journalists.
Guidelines for Applicants
Nine points to have in mind while submitting your media works for the 2011 Edition of the Anna Lindh Journalist Award:
1. The competition is open to citizens of the 43 countries* of the Union for the Mediterranean. Young journalists in particular are highly encouraged to apply.
2. All submissions must have been published / broadcasted by media outlets from 1 July 2010 to 15 July 2011.
3. The name of the author and date of publication or broadcast should be clearly indicated on all items submitted (print, on-line, radio and TV).
4. The deadline for submissions is 15 July 2011.
5. Journalistic works may be submitted in any language, but must be accompanied with a complete translation/script in English or French.
6. Each participant may submit up to three entries.

This extraordinary revolution is affecting the basic structure of Mediterranean societies, especially those in the south, and is raising various discussions and debates that profoundly impact women: the rapid transformation of the boundaries between the public and the private spaces, the relationship between new technology, orality and women’s literature, changes in the relationship between written and oral languages, the increasing use of mother tongues (mainly oral) in the field of education, and the challenges of new transmissions of women’s knowledges.
These issues are the five main axes of the International Congress Forum on “Women and New Media in the Mediterranean Region”, to be held on June 24, 25 and 26, 2011 at the Palais des Congrès, Fez , Morocco :

The Forum of Women of the Mediterranean opened the international short story competition on the subject of “Loss”. The competition, which has been held annually since 1995, invites previously unpublished female authors from the Mediterranean region to submit their works.
The short stories need to be on the required subject of “Loss” and can be written in the authors' language of choice, including Croatia. The submitted works should be between 12,500 and 20,000 characters long (7-10 journalist cards).
The best works will be published in a special collection.
The Marseille-based Forum, established in 1993, is the French branch of the International Forum of Women of the Mediterranean, with headquarters in Turin, Italy. The competition is organized under the Euro-Mediterranean Project, financed by the Anna Lindh Foundation.
The deadline for application expires on May 31, 2011.

Looking for Contributors to Blog on Mediterranean Culture
Between the Seas, a festival of performing arts from the Mediterranean in NYC, is seeking for contributors from Mediterranean countries for the BTS blog. The blog will bring bi-weekly updates on events, articles, policies and initiatives from the countries of the Mediterranean and the diaspora. Following the festival's mission, the blog will contribute to creating a forum for the exchange of information between Mediterranean artists and familiarizing New York artists and audiences with the cultural activity in the region. In anticipation of Between The Seas festival that will be organized in 2011, we are hosting an evening of staged readings that will give the opportunity to NY based artists to connect, share their work and interests and exchange projects and ideas. The event will take place on Monday October 18th, 6-10 pm at Solas [232 East 9th str].
We are inviting proposals for staged readings by writers, directors and theater companies. We are looking for: new plays by contemporary Mediterranean playwrights [preferably that have not been staged in NY before]; new plays by US-based playwrights that engage in various ways with Mediterranean culture and identity; short stories by Mediterranean writers that artists are interested in adapting for the stage.
We welcome short or full-length plays, and script still in progress.
