Burma Telling Its Own Story: Global Post Reporting Fellowship for Journalists (US/ Myanmar)

As Myanmar implements democratic reforms and begins to encourage a free press, the country finds itself in a moment of historic change.
As part of the still unfolding story of Myanmar, Open Hands Initiative and The GroundTruth Project are pleased to announce a reporting fellowship in Burma.
We are looking for 20 top, young correspondents — 10 from America and 10 from Burma — to take part in an all-expenses-paid fellowship in Burma from June 10 to June 30. The 20 reporting fellows will form a team that will work together on a project we are tentatively titling, "Burma Telling Its Own Story."
The reporting fellows will fan out in five groups led by veteran correspondents, photographers and videographers. These groups of reporters will set out across the country looking for the important stories to tell and interesting people to profile as the country makes a dramatic transition to democracy. The work produced by the team will be published as a GlobalPost Special Report.
If you are interested in applying for this reporting fellowship, please send a CV, at least three examples of your work and a letter explaining why you feel uniquely qualified to take part in this fellowship and what you hope to accomplish if your application is successful. Orange Magazine is a project of European Youth Press (EYP), an organisation working for the benefit of young journalists in Europe.
Deutsche Welle is Germany's international broadcaster and host of the DW Global Media Forum. A congress with international reach that draws both media representatives and professionals from all over the world, working in the fields of politics, culture, business, development and science. Layouter
- Responsibilities: The layouter will be responsible for the design of the Orange magazine. We would like to further develop Orange magazine´s design. You can check out the previous issues.
- In order to apply as a layouter, we would like to see 1-2 pages of your ideas. We are looking for a fresh and modern layout! How would you change the Orange magazine design within the DW parameters?
- Eligibility: Previous experience in this area and working in projects.
- Application: Please send a CV and a portfolio of your previous work and 1 or 2 pages samples of your vision of the new Orange layout.
- Responsibilities: The photographer will take pictures of the event, which will be published in the print edition of the Orange Magazine, on the Orange Magazine website, Facebook page and newsletters. The photographer will be expected to edit his own pictures on Photoshop/Aperture in order to prepare them for publishing quality.
- Eligibility: You will have to provide your own camera equipment and demonstrate previous experience in photography.
- Application: Please send a CV and a portfolio with your pictures.
- Responsibilities: The Orange team will produce one issue of the magazine during the Global Media Forum. Each member will have to write at least 1 feature related to the topics of the 2013 edition of the Global Media Forum: economic values & media.

Introducing the Irrawaddy Literary Festival: Burma's First Ever Literary Festival

The Festival’s patron, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, says: “I am delighted to lend my support to this first Irrawaddy Literary Festival. Literature has always been a big part of my life and I hope this festival, which brings together some of the finest talent from Burma, the UK and elsewhere will encourage more people to explore the world of literature and further their understanding of the English language.”

The country is opening up at an incredible speed. More foreigners are entering Myanmar than ever before, people who are interested in culture, in nature, in the experience of a very different country, who come for unspoiled holidays, to meet its people and understand their lives, on their own or in a package tour, or simply to do business.
But not only foreigners travel in Myanmar. Many people of Myanmar travel between different parts of the country to find work and better living conditions, and many of the millions of people living abroad have decided to travel back and visit their families.
Traveling to and in Myanmar encompasses much more than what you find in travel brochures and packages sold to tourists. The movement of people to other places always creates new, unexpected, and often less known situations. Many of them can only be seen by the experienced eyes of those who have learned to observe what is hidden behind the scenes or camouflaged amidst normality, and often only by those who are involved and affected themselves.
It takes not only special skills to find these untold stories and to observe the unseen realities, but also to find the right way to describe them in a text, to put them into the best possible form, and to let others understand and feel what they have not witnessed themselves or what they have overlooked.

CATEGORIES
You can submit your short story in one of two categories:
A. Fiction: You are free to choose the form of your text.
B. Non-fiction: Write a short essay, a commentary or a news story. Your text must be based only on true facts.
CONDITIONS
- The text must be written in English or Burmese and submitted as Word document, PDF or Email, using one of these fonts: Zaw Gyi, Myanmar, or WinBurmese.
- The text must not have already been published elsewhere.
- The length of the text may not exceed 4 pages with font size 12 and double line spacing.
- The text has been entirely produced by the author.
- A text can only be submitted by its author.
- Authors must be citizens of Myanmar.
- Every author may submit only one piece.
- The author agrees that we use his/her work with his/her name or pen name without further financial compensation.
- The text may not incite hate, violence, or racism.
SUBMISSION: Send your text and the completed form, which you can download as PDF or as Word Document to moc.amruboce@tsetnoc and contest@ecoburma.com.
HOW THE WINNERS WILL BE SELECTED
- Jury Award: The jury will select one winner for each category.
- Audience Award: One winner for each category will be chosen by the audience, based on a preselection made by the jury. The audience will vote on the website www.ecoburma.com/contest. Voting will continue and finish at the Wathann Film Fest.
JURY: The members of the jury will be announced shortly.
SELECTION CRITERIA
- The content corresponds to the given topic and submission was timely and in the proper form.
- The text is outstanding in terms of presentation of the content.
- The text deals with the given topic in an innovative way, manages to highlight aspects that are usually overlooked and offers alternative points of view.
- The work reflects specific situations that have arisen in recent months.
We encourage the writing of texts that deal with social aspects, show solidarity with people who usually do not get much public attention, and promote the idea of humanity.
PRESENTATION OF THE WINNING TEXTS: In Yangon on the occasion of the 1st anniversary of the Wathann Film Fest, early September 2012.
PRIZES
- Jury Award: 150 Euro for each category.
- Audience Award: 100 Euro for each category.
The organizers reserve the right to split the prize between multiple winners or not to award a prize in a category where no text has been able to qualify. Prizes will be personally delivered at the Wathann Film Fest.
All decisions are final and not subject to legal appeal.

Thuta Swesone Literary Award Winners Announced
The winners in the sixth Thuta Swesone Literary Award for a Burmese book published in 2009 were announced on Wednesday:
– Min Yu Wai aka Win Maung received the Thuta Swesone Lifetime Achievement Literary Award.
– Maung Moe Thu won in the arts category for Profiles of Prominent Deceased Writers and Artists.
– Pe Myint won in the reference category for Book World.
– Win Htut Zaw won in the social economic category for Petroleum.
– Maung Khin Min won in the belles-lettres category for A Life of a Visiting Professor in Osaka.
– Ko Swe won in the science category.
– Kyi Shoon won in the translation category for Business Success.
– There were no winners in youth literature, international affairs and applied science genres.
Maung Moe Thu is a former member of the National League for Democracy, a film director and current chief editor of Kumudra Journal.
Pe Myint’s Book World is a compendium of information about revolutionary books, major libraries in the world, the greatest banned books and writers who were tortured or sent to prison because of their beliefs. In 1995, Pe Myint won the National Literary award for Human Organs for Sale and Other Short Stories. He is a former editor of Sarpay Journal and current chief editor of People’s Era Journal.
The book of essays by Maung Khin Min (retired Burmese professor, Dr. Khin Aye) is about his experiences from 1997 to 1999 as a Burmese language professor in Osaka, Japan. He wrote about Japanese culture, traditions, Japanese attitudes on Burma, Japanese education standards and cultural exchanges between the two countries. His book contains interviews with Japanese veterans who were in Burma during World War II. Maung Khin Min also won the National Literary award in the belles-lettres category for My Views on Language and Literature, published in 2009, making him the first writer to win two awards in the same category in the same year.
Win Htut Zaw is a prominent essayist and a former political activist. He won the National Literary award in the translation (non-fiction) genre for Blood and Petroleum.
Min Yu Wai, the Thuta Swesone Lifetime Achievement Literary Award winner, also won the National Literary Award in the translation genre in 1954 for Aesop’s Tales. He and writer Htin Lin launched Ngwetaryi Magazine in 1960. He also published a children journal during nineteen-nineties.
A literary prize presentation ceremony will be held on May 1 in Rangoon. The Lifetime Achievement Literary Award winner will be awarded 600,000 kyat (about US$ 690) and other award winners will receive 300,000 kyat ($ 345).
Last year, Chit San Win won the Thuta Swesone Lifetime Achievement Literary Award. The sponsor of the award is Dr. Tin Tun Oo, the cofounder of the Myanmar Times.
Observers of the literary community noted that writers who are former political prisoners or who have criticized the government or who write in a modern or post-modern style have never won the National Literary Award.

Aung Zaw and Mehrdad Oskouei Conferred the 2010 Prince Claus Fund Award for Journalism

Four laureates from Asia will be presented with awards of € 25.000 at ceremonies in their respective countries by Ambassadors of the Netherlands. Since 1997 the Prince Claus Fund has given annual awards to artists, intellectuals and cultural organizations in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean. The 2010 Prince Claus Awards were announced in October to commemorate the birthday of Prince Claus (6 September 1926 – 6 October 2002).
The theme of the 2010 Prince Claus Awards is Frontiers of Reality. In addition, UNOPS Myanmar has been designated as the Principal Recipient for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria grant (GFATM). In November 2009, the Global Fund Board sanctioned the three grant applications submitted by the Myanmar Country Coordination Mechanism (M-CCM).
As the designated Principal Recipient (PR) for the Global Fund grants earmarked for the Ministry of Health and UN Partners, and for overall Procurement, UNOPS Myanmar is responsible for the management of the Principal Recipient operations in an independent and transparent manner. In 2010, UNOPS Myanmar will have to pro-actively negotiate the three grants and meet all Global Fund requirements for the grant financing to be activated for the first two-years. Further, UNOPS will have to complete all the groundwork to start-up the Principal Recipient operations to ensure minimal lag between grant signature and full commencement of operations.
The Communications Officer is responsible for the implementation of the fund's communication strategy by creating and maintaining communications materials that explain and promote the work of GFATM.
