Call for Abstracts for Edited Collection - Imprints of Revolution: Global Resistance, the Popular, and (Post)/(Neo) Colonialism
Deadline: 15 October 2012

Imprints of Revolution: Global Resistance, the Popular, and (Post)/(Neo) Colonialism is an edited collection that explores public representations of socialist revolutions. The edited collection assesses how the concept of revolution is appropriated through public images and explores its re-conceptualization as a mobilizing practice in response to contemporary global issues. The goal of the collection is to explore how revolutions are imagined and re-imagined by governments, residents, and political actors, and how in turn these imageries function as responses to the specific issues of globalization and mass tourism. We would like to discuss the local, urban experiences of revolutions both trans-nationally and trans-culturally. Contributors are encouraged to explore any aspect of revolutionary experiences but should develop the political and historical links between their topics and the revolutionary movement in question.

We are especially interested in, but are not limited to, scholarship that focuses on the visual legacies within Cuba, China, Ghana, Mexico, the United States, and Vietnam. We anticipate this to be a multidisciplinary work and invite submissions from emerging and established scholars working within any field. Scholars in anthropology, cultural studies, history, literature, political studies, communication studies, American studies, ethnic and/or race studies, media studies and gender studies are especially encouraged to submit proposals. Contributors:

If interested, please submit a 500-word abstract of the proposed chapter, as well as sources consulted / cited and a brief biography of 200 words of less detailing professional and academic qualifications by October 15, 2012. All materials should be submitted electronically by April 15, 2013. Essays will be subject to a peer-review process.

Deadline August 17 | Australian Vietnamese Women’s Association Creative Arts Competition ($3,000 top prize)
Deadline: 17 August 2012

The Australian Vietnamese Women’s Association is organising a writing and creative arts competition in collaboration with Victoria University and Offset on the theme : The Trung Queens and women in the 21st century. Prizes are $3,000, $1,000, and many other prizes. A book including the best compositions will be launched, on March 4th 2013, to celebrate both the United Nations International Women’s Day and the 30th anniversary of the Australian Vietnamese Women’s Association..

BACKGROUND

2000 years ago, Giao Chi, the area that represents northern modern Vietnam was under Han Chinese rule, directly administered by the cruel and oppressive governor, To Dinh. Living in that area at the time were Trung Trac and Trung Nhi, the daughters of a local nobleman. They had a great hatred for the way To Dinh exploited and oppressed their people. To add to this, To Dinh had Trung Trac’s husband put to death for trying to start a rebellion.

During this period in Vietnam’s history, women were held in great esteem, and it wasn’t unusual for them to become judges, community leaders, warriors and traders. It was a combination of the high status enjoyed by women at that time, along with their strength, bravery and resilience that enabled the Trung sisters to raise an army of 80,000 and force To Dinh and his regime out of their country. After over a century of Chinese rule, the people of Ciao Chi finally reclaimed their land. Soon after, they crowned Trung Trac Queen, the first monarch to rule Vietnam.

We want you to comment upon, critique, re-present and turn on their heads the notions of gender, youth, power, politics and human rights in the 21st Century. You have two muses upon which to base your piece: The Trung Sisters of 1st Century Vietnam. You may present your work in either English or Vietnamese.

TOPIC/ESSAY QUESTION

Use the lives and triumphs of the Trung Sisters who lived in 1st Century Vietnam as an inspiration for women in the 21st Century

Issues of gender, power, politics and human rights have plagued women and their ability to lead and be heard over the centuries. There have been quite a few examples of mature queens or female prime ministers taking power following the footsteps of either their successful fathers or husbands, but has there been a young woman leading a successful rebellion where a husband had failed such as in the case of Trung Trac?

Show how it would be possible for two women like the Trung Sisters to achieve their objectives in the 21st Century.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

You can represent your piece on the Trung Sisters in the 21st Century context in either English or Vietnamese in the following forms:

Fiction:
  • Poetry (3 examples to be provided if short, up to 100 lines for long poems)
  • Short Story (up to 2000 words)
  • Play
Non-fiction: Essay (analytical or reflective – up to 3000 words – must be well referenced using either Harvard or Oxford referencing methods)

Seeking Journalists from Cambodia, China, India, and Vietnam: Internews - WHO Fellowships for Journalists to Attend Safety Conference in New Zealand
Deadline: 27 July 2012

Are you a health reporter? Are you interested in road safety and injury prevention as a public health issue? Did you know that around the world road traffic injury is the number one leading cause of death for people between the ages of 15-29, and that about 5.8 million people die each year as a result of injuries? Are you a journalist working for an established media house in the developing world? If so, then this Internews short-term fellowship may be the right fit for you.

The fellowships will be awarded to 10 journalists representing established media houses in the developing world to attend the 11th World Conference on Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion held in Wellington, New Zealand, from September 28 – October 4, 2012.

Journalists from all developing countries will be invited to apply but priority will be given to journalists working in the 10 Road Safety target countries identified by the World Health Organization: Brazil, Cambodia, China, Egypt, India, Kenya, Mexico, Russia, Turkey and Vietnam.

The theme of Safety 2012 is “Connecting pathways for a vibrant and safer future.” Held biennially under the auspices of WHO the conference brings together the world's leading injury prevention and safety researchers, practitioners and advocates, to build knowledge and strengthen the fields of injury prevention and safety promotion worldwide. The scholarships will cover attendance to the conference - including the cost of airfare and lodging - and will include specialized training on road traffic and other safety issues prior to the conference as well as expert follow-on mentoring on journalistic skills relevant to such coverage after the conference.

Road traffic is often covered in the media as an event – not as an enormous drain on a country’s health resources or a leading killer of its citizens. Although not a typical health story, by framing it as such, Health journalists have the opportunity to impact the way these stories are told, and potentially help shift policy and public reaction. “ Crashes are one of the greatest public health concerns in the developing world,” said Deborah Ensor, Internews Vice President of the Africa, Health and Humanitarian Media unit. “The number of deaths – and the massive impact on individuals, families, health care systems and the economy for those who survive crashes, is astounding. I strongly believe that increased attention to this issue by the local media can have a great impact on the way people think, behave and demand for safer roads and policies.” Successful applicants must have commitment from their editors to publish and champion stories related to traffic deaths and injuries.

If you are passionate about this issue, can demonstrate a commitment to increasing public awareness of important issues in your home country, and interested in a full scholarship, download the application form. Applications are due no later than Friday, July 27th, at 5 PM EST, and must be submitted to safety2012@internews.org. Applicants will be notified by Friday August 10th, 2012.
