Description: With respect to characterization of Muslims there isn’t any single way to describe how Muslims are portrayed in Science Fiction. There are many cases where Muslims are cast in somewhat negative light in SF stories which are set in the near future. On the other hand stories set in the distant future have rather positive portrayal of Muslims. On this website, information has been collected about the depiction of Islam and Islamic themes in Science Fiction literature and science fiction written by Muslims. It should be noted that most of the information on this website is in regards to English literature and most certain there is a lot of material in other languages as well but because of the linguistic barrier, there is no access to that literature.

Samar: South Asian Magazine for Action and Reflection
Website: http://www.samarmagazine.org/
Email Address: submissions@samarmagazine.org
Editor/Founder: Undisclosed
Country: USA/South Asian diaspora
Type: Online magazine

Description: SAMAR (South Asian Magazine for Action and Reflection) is a magazine/website with a South Asian focus based in the United States. We choose to use the term "South Asian" because we feel it is important to bring attention to the fact that South Asians are a group of people with a shared history and that this history provides a common basis for understanding our place in the contemporary world. Whereas most other South Asian magazines are based on differences of region, religion and nationality within South Asia, we have chosen to base ours on a South Asian collectivity that is now spread out across the globe. At SAMAR, we hope to reflect the full complexity of "South Asian" in the composition of the editorial collective, contributors and readers. SAMAR responds to a need for a publication that fosters serious debates within the South Asian community and is meant for a general audience. It focuses on analyses of social processes rather than on direct reporting of news events. As suggested by the name of the magazine, SAMAR tends towards social analyses that draw their energy from activist involvement.

Description: The Caravan has been shaped as India’s first narrative journalism magazine a la The New Yorker, Harpers, Atlantic Monthly, The New York Review of Books in United States, and Granta and Prospect in the UK. It is a change from the linear ways of reporting, a change from impersonal, dry facts, to a narrative story with perspective. We do not want to simply report the news, or offer the reader pedestrian opinions taking off from current affairs. We want to tell interesting and important stories through rich detail, insightful reporting and smart commentary. While political and social developments shall remain the backbone of this endeavour, the content will span many areas of interest, such as travel, science, environment, education, business, cinema, theatre and music.

Midstream Magazine

Email Address: Kalman Sultanik
Editor/Consultant: Kalman Sultanik
Country: Israel
Type: Online magazine

Description: Midstream begins its second year of quarterly publication with this first issue in 2010. We continue to welcome submission of manuscripts that deal with Jewish life and culture worldwide, past and present, with particular emphasis on contemporary Jewish affairs, political, social, and cultural, in America and in Israel. We trust that our four issues in 2010 will maintain Midstream's reputation as a leading American Jewish Zionist intellectual journal. Midstream publishes many articles, at least one short story (fiction), and from three to ten poems per issue. Articles normally run from 2,000 to 4,000 words and fiction from 2,000 to 5,000 words. We have, on occasion, published longer articles, but writers should try to adhere to our stated limits. Poems are generally short, not more than twenty to thirty lines (counting line-spaces between stanzas), since they are used as fillers on the final page of an article. Here, too, we sometimes manage a longer poem printed in two columns if all the lines are very short. But poets should not count on this rarity. Book reviews on current titles run from 1,000 to 2,000 words; review essays that are more extensive in reach and depth from 2,000 to 4,000 words. Writers of unsolicited articles, memoirs, short stories, and poems need not contact the editor before submission, but it is advisable that book-reviewers send an e-mail description of the book they want to review and a note detailing their expertise in the field, since the editor normally chooses such titles and assigns reviewers. Midstream does not normally publish very short reviews or articles of less than 1,000 words.
