Freelance Bloggers Wanted at Amplify Your Voice.com (worldwide)
FREELANCE BLOGGERS - ADVOCATES FOR YOUTH

Advocates for Youth is hiring a number of freelance bloggers to write on various reproductive justice- and human rights-related topics, including but not limited to:

- Comprehensive sex education and abstinence-only-until marriage programs

- Abortion rights in the U.S. and across the world

- Stereotypes and portrayals of sex, sexuality, and gender in pop culture (film, television, music, etc.)

- LGBT rights in the U.S. and across the world

- Contraceptive access and HIV/AIDS services in communities of need

Your writing will be featured on Amplify (http://www.amplifyyourvoice.org), an online community and blogging platform visited by over one million people in 2010. Amplify is a youth-driven community dedicated to changing society's dysfunctional approach to sex, sexuality, and sexual health. Accordingly, we are looking for bloggers that know how to write with verve, passion, and conviction in order to inspire their readers to social action.

In addition, we are looking for bloggers who can:

- Demonstrate a clear commitment to reproductive justice and sexual health advocacy

- Meet tight editing and publication deadlines
- Write with a strong editorial voice (think opinion-driven and investigation-driven pieces as opposed to academic prose)

- Write thoughtfully on a specific area of expertise, or else on a broad variety of topics

- Be willing to write on topics that are assigned to them, and respond quickly to current events

Finally, freelance bloggers should know -- or at least be willing to learn -- the ins and outs of grassroots online marketing and cross-posting: in this position you will be responsible for promoting your writing on popular websites, blogs, online newspapers and magazines, and other venues.

This is a remote position. Freelance bloggers will be paid per article/blog post.

Organizational Description

Advocates for Youth is dedicated to creating programs and promoting policies that help young people make informed and responsible decisions about their sexual health. Since 1980, Advocates has been providing information, training, and advocacy to youth, youth-serving organizations, policy makers, and the media in the United States and internationally. Advocates' philosophy of Rights.Respect.Responsibility.® informs all its work. The organization promotes youth rights to sexual health information and services, models youth-adult partnerships in all its efforts, and holds society responsible for its role in providing youth with the tools they need to make responsible decisions about their sexual health.

How to apply

BANANA 2: Asian Pacific American Bloggers Conference
Date: 26 February 2011

A most wanted list of Asian Pacific Islander American bloggers from across the country will participate in BANANA 2 on February 26, 2011, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the back lot of CBS Studios in Studio City, Calif.

Register at http://www.banana-2.com/register/

BANANA 2 is a follow-up to the inaugural convening in Nov. 2009 co-hosted by Lac Su, author of I Love Yous Are For White People (HarperCollins, 2009) and Steve Nguyen, a television/film producer and head of the ChannelAPA.com's Los Angeles division, who enlisted the help of a small group of bloggers and community activists to produce an event highlighting and amplifying the online voices of Asian Americans.

“We are excited to have a talented group of established and up-and-coming bloggers from the APIA community at this second annual gathering to share their voices, knowledge, endeavors and visions with others – bloggers and non-bloggers, APIAs and non-APIAs,” said Su. “All of the bloggers expected to attend have unique views of their own community, and will share their progression as an APIA blogger.”

The conference will provide an opportunity for bloggers and their readers to build a stronger community by beginning conversations and building relationships beyond the conference. Conference panels will include topics on using blogs and social media to create meaningful social change, working with businesses and corporations and defining the role of Asian American bloggers.

The first gathering featured bloggers from Angry Asian Man, Minority Militant, 8Asians, Neaato (Network of Entertaining Asian American Talent), Hyphen Magazine, Mochi Magazine, Channel APA, Bicoastal Bitchin’, AArising, Antisocial Ladder, Nikkei View, VisualizAsian, Kimchi Mamas, Asian Pacific Americans for Progress, DVAN (Diasporic Vietnamese American Network), bigWOWO, and Sepia Mutiny.

Conference admission is $20 per person. Participants will be able to register online at http://banana-2.com/ now until Feb. 25, 2011. A complete schedule of panels and presenters will be announced in late Jan. 2011.

A list of articles, posts, photos and video related to last year’s gathering is available at the end of Gil Asakawa’s blog post at http://goo.gl/CwKdu. You can connect with BANANA 2 at http://facebook.com/banana2.event and at http://twitter.com/Banana2_Event.

Jnews Seeks Bloggers on Pakistan/ Israel (payment: £75 per blog)
Would you be interested in writing occasional blogs about Israel/Palestine for JNews?

Some of you already know about JNews as a media project that attempts to affect mainstream British media's coverage of Israel/Palestine from a perspective of human rights and justice.

We have finished our pilot phase and are now planning to expand to include, among other things, a journalists' tour to Israel/Palestine, a Democratic Audit of Israel and a Bloggers Corner on the website.

Bloggers Corner: As you know the JNews website already carries some original news items, analysis and commentary by experts.

We are now planning to start a bloggers corner in which Palestinian and Israeli bloggers and activists - whether in Israel/Palestine or in other countries - can provide their insight into Israeli and Palestinian politics, representations and realities. The idea is to bring local alternative voices to life in English, in the UK.

We can pay a fee of GBP 75 per completed blog, and will start out by publishing 2-4 blogs per month, growing from there. We also plan to link to other similar projects such as electronicintifada, 972mag and AICnews, and hope to coordinate and crosspost with them. Please note that this is not a 'joint' or 'normalising' project, nor does it advocate a particular political program. Rather it is a platform on which different bloggers can voice their views and perspectives against the voices of occupation and oppression.

We are planning a first meeting for potential bloggers - or other activists who know bloggers / wish to be involved - in London on 12 January, but we will be very glad to accept blogs from people who live in other countries as well.

Please let us know

a) If you would like to be involved in any way

b) If you can attend the 12 January meeting in London

c) If you want to contribute a blog occasionally, and if so, how often (once or twice a month? Once a quarter? Just once?)

d) If you know other activists or bloggers who might want to contribute

The material we are looking for includes political analysis that is linked to human rights or social justice discourse. We don't need information on violations that are already reported elsewhere, or information with no political context – most mainstream media have no idea what or where Ni'lin or Silwan are and what their significance is, so isolated reports of developments there will add nothing to their understanding of the issues. Rather, we seek analysis and opinion on everyday social developments and on politics behind the scenes, and insight on the realities that are represented in the media.

This can include e.g. descriptions/analysis of

· growing fascism/racism/segregation inside Israeli society and government;

· developments in mechanisms used for oppression by the Israeli government (e.g., new legislation, new enforcement of existing draconian regulations, hostile bureaucracy, police brutality, attacks on human rights defenders etc.);

· internal Palestinian politics of Fatah/PA / Hamas; repression of opposition in Gaza/WB and how this feeds into the broader picture of occupation;

· creeping annexation in the West Bank and the Gaza 'endgame' - in context: how these fit into longer-term prospects for all of Israel/Palestine;

· the experience of political prisoners and their role in Palestinian politics

· politics of nakba memory / role of refugees in Palestinian politics;

· Developments in Palestinian politics inside Israel (1948 Palestinians);

· activism and forms of resistance à repression of activism;

· critique of politics and policies of EU/US/UN/development agencies/ICRC/OECD etc. in Israel/Palestine (but please keep the focus local!);

· activism in/from overseas (from a local perspective)

Even if you feel you can only write one piece about one of these topics (or others) that would be great. If you feel that you can't blog, or that you can't blog in English, JNews will be glad to provide help with editing and translating.

We aim for most our bloggers to be Israeli or Palestinian. However, if others want to contribute pieces, JNews would be glad to post these on its 'Commentary' section, subject to our editors' decisions.

Example of a one-month blog action on activism in a specific area, and what it can be used for:

· A blogger/activist has good connections in the South Hebron Mountains à JNews office writes a data-rich background piece on the history and context of occupation and dispossession in that area à a blogger writes an analysis of forms of oppression / activism there and helps find news, photos and video regarding violations, activism and repression, reporting over a period of a few weeks à the combination of these materials is made available to mainstream correspondents in Jerusalem/Ramallah and to editors/producers in London. Future newsworthy events are covered with links to the original pack.

· This can then feed into other JNews activities: Activists from selected regions/groups will be invited to London and introduced informally to key media people; Journalists visiting Israel/Palestine will be encouraged to visit the same regions/groups.

Education requirements: High school

Description

Voices of Youth needs bloggers!

Voices of Youth is UNICEF's site for young people interested in learning about and taking action on issues affecting their lives. VOY is currently undergoing a redesign to update the site's look and functionality. The new site will emphasize interactivity and dialogue, and will feature posts from youth contributors, UNICEF staff, activists, bloggers, etc. Our target population is young people worldwide who are interested in learning more about issues central to UNICEF's mandate (such as child rights, gender-based issues, education, HIV and AIDS, etc.)

We're looking for 2 part-time bloggers to create original content (primarily print, but video, audio, and visual pieces are welcome) for Voices of Youth. Content can include: position pieces on topics relevant to VOY; interviews with thought-leaders; innovative youth-based initiatives to watch; overviews of new trends or breaking news; interesting photos or videos, etc.

Contracts will start in February for 3 months, with the possibility of extension. Previous blogging experience is not necessary, but you should be an excellent writer and familiar with blogging conventions. People of color and people from countries outside the U.S. are strongly encouraged to apply.

You should:

• Be an excellent writer, with solid research skills and the ability to tell a good story;
• Have interest or experience in one or more of the areas currently highlighted on VOY;
• Be able to commit to roughly 2 to 3 days per week;
• Have excellent time-management and organizational skills;
• Have a solid internet connection and a gmail account;
• Be able to put your own unique spin on other articles/blog posts.

Experience blogging with similar themes is highly desirable, as is past experience as an activist, demonstrated use of social media, and knowledge about key themes in development. We'll work with you along the way, and are flexible regarding working hours and check-ins. UNICEF retains the right to full editorial privileges.

How to apply

Please send an email with the subject line "VOY" to unicef.youth.jobs@gmail.com by January 4, 2011, and include the following:

1. A brief description of why you think you are a good fit, including topics you'd be interested in writing about (please check out the current VOY site at www.unicef.org/voy)

2. Between one and three writing samples, one of which should be a blog entry of no more than 600 words.

3. A resume.

Please note: due to the high volume of responses, only candidates selected for interviews will be contacted.
