Stafford Library launched its first Short Story Competition on World Book Day. The inaugral competition is being sponsored by the Lewis Partnership, the owners of Stafford’s historic Swan Hotel.

Staffordshire Libraries and the Lewis Partnership are celebrating the 200th Anniversary of Charles Dickens’ birth with this competition and the first prize is £250 plus a night at the Swan Hotel in the room where Charles Dickens slept during his visit to Stafford. Dickens stayed at the former coaching inn in 1852 after a visit to the Copeland factory in the Potteries.

The competition is open to adults and children alike, as reflected in the sponsored prizes:

First prize £250 – and a night at the Swan Hotel in the room where Charles Dickens slept during his visit to Stafford.

Special prize for the best entry from anyone aged 12 -18 years, not chosen for the first prize - £20 book token plus £100 worth of books for their school library.

Special prize for the best entry from anyone aged up to 11 years, not chosen for the first prize - £20 book token plus £100 worth of books for their school library.

Everyone wishing to participate should read Word Document Stafford-Short-Story-Competition-Rules and note that the closing date for entries is on 4 August 2012, and that the winners will be announced at the Stafford Arts Festival on Saturday 15 September 2012.

RULES

1) Entries must be no more than 2000 words.
2) Entries must be entirely the authors’ original work.
3) The first prize may be won by an author of any age.
4) Entries must be in English. We welcome entries from authors of any age, anywhere in the world.
5) There is no charge for entering.
6) Copies of stories will not be returned.
7) Entries must include author’s name, address and age (if under 18.)
8) Winners will be announced in the local press and on www.staffordshire.gov.uk
9) Winning entries may be reproduced for display or on their websites by Staffordshire Libraries and Information Services and the Lewis Partnership.

Entries must be to be posted to Stafford Short Story Competition, Shire Hall Library, Market St, Stafford ST16 2LQ or emailed to stafford.library@staffordshire.gov.uk

Winners will be announced at the Stafford Arts Festival on Saturday 15 September 2012.
