As part of the Philippine Veterans Week from April 5 to 11, 2010, the Philippine Veterans Affairs Office of the Department of National Defense will be launching the book "The Freedom Fighters of Northern Luzon: An Untold Story" by Cesar P. Pobre with Phillip Kimpo Jr. on April 6, 3 PM at the AFP Theater Lobby, Bulwagang Heneral Arturo T. Enrile.
Dr. Pobre is a retired colonel of the Armed Forces of the Philippines. He is presently a consultant/senior research fellow at the AFP Office of Strategic and Special Studies and a scholar with several books to his name. Kimpo, on the other hand, is the president of LIRA, the premier institute of poets in Filipino.
The book is a literary and factual account of how the Filipino guerrillas of the Ilocos, the Cordilleras, and the Cagayan valley—outnumbered, outgunned, and cut off from the rest of the world—liberated themselves from the clutches of the Japanese in the Second World War. The hardbound book has 171 pages and is foreworded by DND Undersecretary and PVAO Administrator Ernesto G. Carolina.
The first run of the book will not be available commercially, as its 1,000 copies are to be distributed to DND personnel, libraries, and select educational institutions. A second printing is a distinct possibility.
The launch will be held back to back with the cutting of the ribbon for the "Victory at Bessang Pass" exhibit. Attendance to both events are by invitation only.
