Editorial Manager, Iraq
Location: Baghdad, Iraq
Editorial Manager with fluency in spoken and written Arabic required to oversee the editing and production of news, news analysis, features, opinion pieces and art of IWPR’s output in Iraq.

Reporting to: Country Programs Director and Senior Media Advisor
Salary: $72,000US/annum
Term: Full-Time, 40 Hours a week
Duration: 12 months
CONTEXT
Since the fall of the old regime, IWPR has worked to build skills, enhance institutions and support reliable media production across the country, working with local journalists and media. The goal has been to establish a widespread culture of professionalism, seeking to inculcate an appreciation of international skills and standards – what some Iraqis now refer to as the “IWPR approach” to balanced and responsible reporting. Our work is distinguished by a hands-on, practical approach to training and production. Currently IWPR is implementing five media focused programs in Iraq.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES
1. To oversee the editing and production of news, news analysis, features, opinion pieces and art for editorial packages.
2. To manage editorial staff in Iraq.
3. To shape and help launch new editorial products, including IWPR’s Iraq national website(s).
4. To advise and direct programme staff on new editorial projects.
5. To ensure that editorial grants are being properly implemented.
6. To oversee the implementation of editorial budgets.
7. To provide editorial feedback for contributors, staff and trainees, in the form of verbal and written assessments.
8. To report stories, as needed.
9. To oversee the Admissions Department
10. To be alert to libel and contempt of court issues and ensure that they are addressed promptly.
11. To draft and oversee editorial manuals and guidelines for staff and contributors.
12. To work with trainers to ensure that IWPR editorial principles and standards are applied in training materials and courses.
13. To ensure coordination between the training and editorial departments.
14. To contribute information on editorial activities for donor and development reports.
15. To recruit and hire editorial staff and trainers, as needed.
16. To be prepared to go on occasional trips to other offices to support/train local staff and contributors.
17. To provide ideas for - and develop - training literature, such as practical exercises and tests.
18. To provide information on editorial needs, accomplishments and objectives for grant writers.
19. To handle press and enquiries about editorial output.
20. To help organise Iraq events such as press briefings/conferences.
21. To keep daily timesheet of hours spent on specific projects, to be submitted in the first week of each month.
General
1. Undertake other duties that may be reasonably requested by the Country Director and Programme Co-ordinator from time to time.
2. Ensure IWPR complies with Health and Safety legislation in all of its work.
3. Respect and work towards full implementation of IWPR’s Equal Opportunities Policies in all the work involved in this post.

Qualifications and Skills
Essential
1. Fluent Arabic and English (written and oral)
2. Three years of experience editing news.
3. Strong writing and reporting skills.
4. Strong communication and management skills.
5. Broad understanding and knowledge of international politics and cultures, especially the Middle East.
5. Ability to research and analyse complex issues.
6. Experience of training and mentoring journalists, or willingness to do so.
Desirable
1. Web publishing experience
