The Script Road: Macau Literary Festival Opens March 10th
Date: 10- 16 March 2013
The 2nd edition of The Script Road – Macau Literary Festival will be held from March 10 to 16 and will bring to the city more than 30 renowned writers, publishers, translators, journalists, musicians, filmmakers, visual artists and more.
This year the event will receive even further significant support from the Cultural Affairs Bureau of Macau and the Macau Foundation, who now co-organise the festival together with Ponto Final newspaper.
Following last year’s model, conferences and debates will be held alongside a book fair, art exhibitions, music concerts and film screenings.
The 2013 Festival programme will feature prominent contemporary Chinese writers including Bi Feiyu, winner of some of the highest literary awards in China; Han Shaogong, author of “A Dictionary of Maqiao” and translator of the work of Fernando Pessoa; Hong Ying, one of the best internationally known Chinese writers; and Yi Sha, a controversial contemporary poet. Other names such as Sheng Keyi, Qiu Huadong, Pan Wei, Wang Gang, Huang Lihai, Li Shao Jun and Taiwanese poet Xi Murong are also very influential writers in contemporary Chinese literature – and all of them will be joining the festival.
On the Portuguese-speaking side, The Script Road is inviting Dulce Maria Cardoso, one of the greatest novelists of her generation; Rui Zink and Ricardo Araújo Pereira, who work with language and humour in a very special way; Francisco José Viegas, former Portuguese Culture Secretary of State, writer and publisher; Valter Hugo Mãe, recent winner the PT Prize, one of the most prestigious literary prizes for Portuguese-speaking authors; writer and journalist Alexandra Lucas Coelho; journalist and translator Carlos Vaz Marques; publisher Bárbara Bulhosa; and, with the support of Casa de Portugal, novelist Deana Barroqueiro.
José Eduardo Agualusa, an Angolan author and one of the best-known Portuguese-speaking contemporary African writers, will also join this festival edition, as will Luís Cardoso, probably the most important literary voice from East Timor. From Brazil the poet Regis Bonvicino and Paraty Festival director Mauro Munhoz have already been confirmed to take part. Paloma and Cecília Amado, daughter and granddaughter of Jorge Amado (1912-2001), one of the greatest Brazilian novelists of all time, are coming to Macau to pay homage to his work by showing a documentary and a fiction film based on his life and on one of his books, respectively.
A number of local writers, including poet Fernanda Dias, Tong Mui Siu, Chek In, Lou Mou and Wong Man Fai, are also among the invited guests of the event, representing the Macau literary scene.
The Script Road has also decided to gradually open the event to other Asian and Latin writers, and that’s why this year we welcome French authors Antoine Volodine and Claude Hudelot, who have both already developed affinities with Macau, China and the Lusophone world.
One of the highlights of the festival’s programme will be the launch of a book of short stories set in the territory. At last year’s edition of The Script Road audiences were invited to take part in a short story competition, judged by a panel of the visiting international authors at the event: Su Tong, José Luís Peixoto and Xu Xi, one from each language, Chinese, Portuguese and English. From more than 30 entries, a number of stories were chosen for publication and the winners will be announced shortly, at the Festival’s press conference.
These short stories will be published together with stories written by last year’s guest writers, such as José Luís Peixoto, Lolita Hu, João Paulo Cuenca, Jimmy Qi and Rui Cardoso Martins. This year the Festival is again inviting all visiting authors to write about Macau.
The Script Road will feature some cinematic highlights. The award-winning film “The Last Time I Saw Macau”, by João Pedro Rodrigues and João Rui Guerra da Mata will have its Chinese pre-premier at the festival, before being presented at the Hong Kong International Film Festival. This is probably the most important and awarded film about this city made in the last decades.
The Chinese filmmaker Wiseman Wang will bring us “Journey to the South”, a road movie where a truck driver crosses China, heading south to Guangdong province, trying to earn money to solve family issues.
Macau-based director Ivo Ferreira will also screen his new film, “On The Dragon’s Flake”, and historian and Sinologue Claude Hudelot will present “Hou Bo, Xu Xiaobing, Mao’s Photographers”, a documentary he directed together with Jean-Michel Vecchiet.
As with last year’s festival, music will again play an important part in the 2013 event. Portugal’s finest traditional music will be performed by celebrated fado singer Camané. The Portuguese folk musical band Dead Combo, one of the most interesting music projects in Portugal and which gained international acclaim after appearing on Anthony Bourdain’s world popular TV Show “No Reservations”, is also confirmed to take to the stage.
The Script Road will host two artists-in residence based at the Orient Foundation; Chen Yu from China and Theodore Mesquita from Goa. The two painters, from very different backgrounds, will follow the same brief: to create works that reflect their experience of Macau. As well as creating new art, they will also be exhibiting previous works in the lower gallery of the Orient Foundation.
Another exhibition, curated by the local artist Alice Kok, will be held at the Old Court Building where a number of local creative authors will work on the theme “Beyond Words”.
In cooperation with the Education and Youth Affairs Bureau, the Festival aims to establish a strong connection with local schools and universities, giving young readers a chance to get in touch with the guest authors.
This year’s festival has the support of the Macau University (UMAC), the Pen Club, the Institute for Civic Affairs (IACM), the Macau Tourism Bureau, the Macau Education and Youth Affairs Bureau, the Society of Arts and Letters, IPOR, the Orient Foundation, Macau Closer, the Portuguese Bookshop and Casa de Portugal as well as other public and private entities.

Macau was for centuries fertile ground for literary creation. Through here many have passed – and written about this place – different men and women. The short story competition that is now present intends to help revitalize the act of writing about Macau – in Chinese, Portuguese and English.
The Script Road short story competition will accept works in three languages and the final jury will consist of the writers Su Tong (Chinese), José Luís Peixoto (Portuguese) and Xu Xi (English). They will be the ones to decide who the winners are.
ADDRESSEES:
a) The competition is addressed to all people without any constraints of age, nationality or residence.
b) The immediate families of members of the organization and members of the jury cannot compete, nor can any persons connected with newspaper Ponto Final, the Sociedade de Artes e Letras and the organization of The Script Road festival.
PRESENTATION OF THE STORIES
a) All stories must have Macau as a backdrop, as the theme. They should, in some way, be about Macau.
b) Each entrant may submit up to two stories maximum. Entries must be original and may be in Chinese, Portuguese or English.
c) The text should have a maximum of five thousand words in Portuguese and English, and ten thousand words in Chinese.
DEADLINE AND SUBMISSION
a) The competition stories should be delivered at the premises of the newspaper Ponto Final (Avenida do Infante D. Henrique, No. 43-53A, Macau Square Building, 13K,) up to 20h of the day May 31, 2012.
b) The works sent by mail must bear the stamp with a dispatch date before May 31, 2012.
c) Projects must be delivered in a sealed envelope containing the inscription on the outside “The Script Road story competition.”
d) Participants should place four copies of each story on A4 paper inside the envelope. The text should be formatted in 12-point, 1.5line spacing and Arial font, in the case of short stories in English and Portuguese, and SimSun in the case of the stories in Chinese. Entrants must also include in the envelope a photocopy of any identification document.
COMPETITION JURY
a) The jury will initially consist of a group of people invited by the organization of the Script Road and by members of the festival organizers. There will be a jury for the competition in each of the languages. This committee will make a first pre-selection of five texts, which are then to be put forward for consideration by the final jury. The Script Road short story competition will accept works in three languages and the final jury will consist of the writers Su Tong (Chinese), José Luís Peixoto (Portuguese) and Xu Xi (English). They will be the ones to decide who the winners are.

a) The competition is addressed to all people without any constraints of age, nationality or residence.
b) The immediate families of members of the organization and members of the jury cannot compete, nor can any persons connected with newspaper Ponto Final, the Sociedade de Artes e Letras and the organization of The Script Road festival.
2. Presentation of the stories
a) All stories must have Macau as a backdrop, as the theme. They should, in some way, be about Macau.
b) Each entrant may submit up to two stories maximum. Entries must be original and may be in Chinese, Portuguese or English.
c) The text should have a maximum of five thousand words in Portuguese and English, and ten thousand words in Chinese.
3. Deadline and submission
a) The competition stories should be delivered at the premises of the newspaper Ponto Final (Avenida do Infante D. Henrique, No. 43-53A, Macau Square Building, 13K,) up to 20h of the day May 31, 2012.
b) The works sent by mail must bear the stamp with a dispatch date before May 31, 2012.
c) Projects must be delivered in a sealed envelope containing the inscription on the outside “The Script Road story competition.”
d) Participants should place four copies of each story on A4 paper inside the envelope. The text should be formatted in 12-point, 1.5line spacing and Arial font, in the case of short stories in English and Portuguese, and SimSun in the case of the stories in Chinese. Entrants must also include in the envelope a photocopy of any identification document.

a) The jury will initially consist of a group of people invited by the organization of the Script Road and by members of the festival organizers. The Association of Stories in Macao: Book Launch and Poetry Reading

The Association of Stories in Macao (ASM) and Creative Macau, Center for Creative Industry are holding a book launch and poetry reading for two latest books of poems at 3:00 p.m., on March 10th (Sat). The two books are Mapa Refeito written by Hong Kong poet Leung Ping-kwan (Ye Si), translated into Portuguese by Beatriz Brasil, and the Chinese-Portuguese-English trilingual book of poems, Estória Primavera, written by Macao poet Lily Han. Apart from the poets and translators metioned above, together with poet and translator Yao Feng, Portuguese poet Manuel Pinho, writer Debby Sou Vai-keng, and poet Chris Song Zijiang will read their works and share their experience of writing and translating poetry with the audience.
Leung Ping-kwan is the best-loved poet from Hong Kong, Chair Professor of Comparative Literature in Lingnan University. Mapa Refeito renders his poetry on the border-crossing and re-positioning on the maps of geography, gourmet and history. Lily Han might be the only poet in Macao who writes in the three languages. The publication of her trilingual book, Estória Primavera, symbolizes the development of the overall landscape of Macao poetry. The Portuguese contents of these two books will give Portuguese writers and readers in Macao a glance at the city in the visions of Chinese poets.
This launch and reading also aims at closing the gap between Chinese writers and Portuguese writers in Macao and Hong Kong, encouraging exchange and dialogues, and discovering collaborative opportunities between poets of different languages in the area. ASM is a non-profit community publisher in Macao. With the generous and continuous support from the Macao Foundation and the Macao Cultural Institute, ASM on the one hand encourages young writers in Macao taking their first strides in their own literary careers, and helps them publish their first books of poetry and/or short stories; on the other it tries over the time to break the ice between writers of different languages by way of establishing disparate and distinct projects of literary translation, and paints a new landscape of Macao literature.

The Association of Stories in Macao to Launch Twelve New Titles
ASM (Association of Stories in Macao) is launching twelve books of literature on Friday April 29th at 5.30 pm at Fellows Corner, 5th Floor, Pearl Jubilee College, Block 3, University of Macau. The event is hosted by Prof. George Watt, the Head of Pearl Jubilee College of the Univeristy of Macau.
Throwing Words Together – 101 Poems-Making Exercises by Kit Kelen. This book is going to be launched by Prof. Agnes Lam from the Hong Kong University.
Pan Chai – a Filipino boy in Macau which is a selection of poems by a Filipino poet, Papa Osmubal, who has been living in Macao for more than twenty years. Consul Raul C. Dado, Philippine Government's Consul in Macao SAR, is going to launch this title.
Six Festival Tales (stories in English and Chinese) is written by Cheyenne Zhang who has been studying in the English Department at the University of Macao.
Snö och andra dikter (Snow and other poems) which are Kit Kelen’s poems translated into Swedish by Merima Dizdarević (current exchange student from Sweden) and Prof. Björn Sundmark.
A Ride in the Wolf's Eyes – Thirty New Macao Poets and The Mountains Sing Back and Other Stories are the collecitve efforts of the Creative Writing class of the University of Macao. Prof. John Corbett is invited to be the launcher of these two books.
Four young poets will read their works in their first chapbook of poetry, Crystal Wong Kit U – Sheltering With Other Ill Fish, Cora Chong – Balloons, Dodo Gao – Echoes in the Petals and Mary Wong – Thousand Miles of Skin. Chair Prof. Martin Montgomery, Head of the English Department of the University of Macau, is going to launch these titles by the former graduates and current postgraduate students of the English Department.
ASM is cooperating with the Cerberus Press of Australia to produce Pocket Poets, a series of poetry books. The first two titles are A Pocket Kit by Kit Kelen, which is a selection of Kelen’s essential poetical work, and Decline and Fall by Rae Desmond Jones, which is translated into Chinese by Hilda Tam Hio Man and Song Zijiang.
Preceding to the book launch, there is a public lecture by Prof. Agnes S. L. Lam from the University of Hong Kong. The lecture is about the literary phenomenon in Hong Kong and Macao that some authors choose to write in their additional language, English. It is held at the HG01 Lecture Hall of the University of Macau.

MDT SHORT STORY” COMPETITION
The “MDT Short Story” Award, set up by Macau Daily Times, intends to encourage the writing experience in the different communities of Macau, as well as the promotion of new literary talent.
Article 1
The competition is open to all Macau Residents, with exception to the Macau Daily Times journalists and the Macau Daily Publications Ltd. employees.
Article 2
1. The works must be original and may be submitted in English, Chinese or Portuguese.
2. The participants may submit up to three texts but only one can be awarded.
3. The stories have no minimum words limit but cannot exceed five thousand words in English or Portuguese and ten thousand words in Chinese.
4. The short stories must have Macau as the theme.
Article 3
1. All works must be delivered in the Macau Daily Times newsroom (Av. Infante D. Henrique nr. 62, Centro Comercial Central, 2nd floor) until 6 p.m. on 13 May, 2011.
2. The registration date of works sent by mail will be the one on the dispatch stamp.
3. Participants must submit each story within a sealed envelope with the legible pseudonym adopted by the author written, and with the reference “Short Story Award/Macau Daily Times”.
§ – A contestant must use the same pseudonym if competing with more than one story.

MDT SHORT STORY” COMPETITION
The “MDT Short Story” Award, set up by Macau Daily Times, intends to encourage the writing experience in the different communities of Macau, as well as the promotion of new literary talent.
Article 1
The competition is open to all Macau Residents, with exception to the Macau Daily Times journalists and the Macau Daily Publications Ltd. employees.
Article 2
1. The works must be original and may be submitted in English, Chinese or Portuguese.
2. The participants may submit up to three texts but only one can be awarded.
3. The stories have no minimum words limit but cannot exceed five thousand words in English or Portuguese and ten thousand words in Chinese.
4. The short stories must have Macau as the theme.
Article 3
1. All works must be delivered in the Macau Daily Times newsroom (Av. Infante D. Henrique nr. 62, Centro Comercial Central, 2nd floor) until 6 p.m. on 13 May, 2011.
2. The registration date of works sent by mail will be the one on the dispatch stamp.
3. Participants must submit each story within a sealed envelope with the legible pseudonym adopted by the author written, and with the reference “Short Story Award/Macau Daily Times”.

The Association of Stories in Macao to Launch 13 New Books

At a ceremony to be held at CCI (Creative Macau) at the Macao Cultural Centre, ASM (the Association of Stories in Macao) will launch thirteen new books, covering a range of categories, including contemporary and classical poetry, poetry translation, short fiction and life writing. Guest of honour at the launch will be the famous Hong Kong poet and Lingnan University Comparative Literature Chair, Professor Leung Ping Kwan.
Established in 2005, ASM is a non-profit government-registered community organisation dedicated to the promotion of writing and other artistic expression from and about Macao. Up until now, ASM has published fifty books, including poetry, novels, stories for children, teaching guides and much classical poetry in translation. ASM has published first books of poetry or fiction by many young Macao authors. This year’s launch features a second volume of (twenty) Australian poets, presented in parallel text, in English and Chinese. The books to be launched on December 18th are as follows:

Asian Cha's Call for Submissions: "The China Issue"
Cha: An Asian Literary Journal (http://asiancha.com/) is now accepting submissions for "The China Issue", an edition of the journal devoted exclusively to work from and about contemporary China. The issue, which will be published in June 2011, will feature poetry, fiction, creative non-fiction, scholarly works and visual art exploring the modern Middle Kingdom. We are looking for submissions from a wide range of Chinese and international voices on the social, political and cultural forces which are shaping the country. If you have something interesting, opinionated or fresh to say about China today, we would like to hear from you. Please note that we can only accept submissions in English.

just a coin’s worth of blue (fifteen new Macao voices), a bilingual parallel text volume published by ASM was launched with a reading at CCI (at the Macao Cultural Centre) last June 3rd.
The ‘fifteen voices’ are mainly those of the English Department’s Masters Poetry students, some of the graduate or undergraduate Creative Writing students. The anthology is in hard copy and on-line forms. The book will be launched by Professor Martin Montgomery, the English Department’s new Chair Professor.

"a guest giving way like ice melting" Book Launch
The book of poems “a guest giving way like ice melting – thirteen ways of looking at laozi” by American poet and philosopher Steven Schroeder and Macao painter and poet Debby Sou Vai Keng is being launched at 10 Fantasia - A Creative Industries Incubator, in the St. Lazarus District, at 3:30pm this Saturday, 22nd May. The two poets will be reading their laozi poems in company of live music composed by Macao musician John Vu. A handmade book of laozi poems and paintings produced by the authors will also be on display on this occasion. Everyone interested in poetry, music and painting will be welcome to spend an early summer afternoon in a lovely garden. This activity is organized by Association of Stories of Macao, venue sponsored by 10 Fantasia - A Creative Industries Incubator.

As the on-line poetry organ of the Macao publisher ASM, Poetry Macao invites submissions of and about poetry from around the world. Poetry Macao does not publish reviews or literary criticism but it is interested in publishing theoretical work about poetry and poetics, dialogues between poets and poetic work that crosses generic boundaries (e.g. prose poems, visual poems). Publishing poetry from and about Macao (and neighbouring regions) will always be a priority for the journal. Although translation is an important feature, Poetry Macao is primarily an English language journal and one of its key goals is to bring Macao’s Chinese and Portuguese language poets to an English-reading audience. Poetry Macao’s first number – in 2007 – coincides with the November 6 Australia-Macao poetry evening being held at the University of Macau. Therefore the first issue has strong participation by Australian poets, something Poetry Macao hopes to continue into the future.
In general terms, ‘Macao’ is the thematic focus of the journal. The idea is intended to be taken broadly. Macao is not just a single point on the map; associated with a long history of east-west communication (and confusion), Macao is a name suggestive of cultural crossing of all kinds, and of the accommodation of cultures for each other. Poetry Macao encourages contributions consonant with this idea and is especially interested in western engagements with (and responses to) Chinese culture, and the converse (Chinese engagement with the west).
Contributions of various kinds are sought – poetry of course but also dialogue, artwork, photography… Macao is an opening between worlds and following that idea, we – at Poetry Macao are open to suggestions.
Beyond this general call, Poetry Macao will make specific calls from time to time for themed supplements or for participation in activities such as dialogue or responses to particular poems or poets. The first of these specific calls relates to the animal rulers-of- the-years in the Chinese zodiac.
