Call for Submissions - Likhaan 6: Journal of Contemporary Literature (Philippines)

The LIKHAAN: UP Institute of Creative Writing announces that it is now accepting submissions for possible inclusion in the sixth issue of Likhaan: The Journal of Contemporary Literature.
Likhaan, the country's leading literary peer-reviewed journal funded by the Office of the UP Diliman Chancellor and published annually, showcases the best of new and unpublished Philippine writing in English and Filipino. Submissions to the journal undergo a strict pre-screening and blind refereeing process by both the editors and a panel of referees composed of eminent writers and critics from within and outside UP. The ICW fellows and associates take turns serving as its editor.
Previous editors of the journal are ICW director Jose Y. Dalisay Jr., National Artist for Literature Virgilio S. Almario, former ICW director and former UP Vice-President for Public Affairs Cristina Pantoja Hidalgo, award-winning writer Pedro ‘Jun’ Cruz Reyes, and Dr. Roland Tolentino, dean of the College of Mass Communication. Likhaan 6 will be edited by Dr. Gémino H. Abad. Associate editors will be National Artist Virgilio S. Almario (for Filipino) and Dr. Cristina Pantoja Hidalgo (for English).
GUIDELINES FOR SUBMISSION:
1.For its sixth issue, Likhaan: The Journal of Contemporary Philippine Literature 6, will accept submissions in the following genres, in both English and Filipino:
* Short stories ranging from about 12 to 30 pages double-spaced, in 11-12 points Times Roman, New York, Palatino, Book Antique, Arial or some such standard font. (A suite of short prose pieces will be considered.)
* A suite of four to seven poems, out of which the editors might choose three to five. (Long poems will be considered in lieu of a suite.)
* Creative nonfiction (essays, memoirs, profiles, etc.), subject to the same length limitations as short stories (see above).
* Critical/scholarly essays, subject to the same length limitations as short stories (see above)
* Excerpts from graphic novels, or full short graphic stories, for reproduction in black and white on no more than 10 printed pages, 6” x 9.” (Excerpts should be accompanied by a synopsis of the full narrative.)
2. All submissions must be original, and previously unpublished.
3. All submissions must be accompanied by a biographical sketch (no more than one or two short paragraphs) of the author, including contact information (address, telephone number, e-mail address).

The director of the 2012 workshop is Likhaan Fellow Charlson Ong. The Advisers, Fellows, and Associates of the UP ICW comprise the workshop panel. These are UP ICW Director Jose Y. Dalisay Jr., National Artist for Literature Virgilio S. Almario, National Artist for Literature Bienvenido Lumbera, Gémino Abad, Romulo Baquiran, Cristina Pantoja Hidalgo, J. Neil Garcia, Victor Emmanuel Carmelo Nadera Jr., Jun Cruz Reyes, Rolando Tolentino, and Mario Miclat.
The following are the submission guidelines:
QUALIFICATIONS – To qualify, applicants (1) must be writers in English or Filipino; (2) must have attended at least one creative writing workshop (national/regional, including the UP National Writers Workshops), or earned a degree in Creative Writing/Malikhaing Pagsulat, or won at least one national/international literary award; (3) must have published at least three poems or two short stories or two pieces of creative nonfiction in reputable collections or anthologies, journals, magazines (including campus publications), or refereed Internet web magazines, or have had a play staged. Writers who have been fellows at any of the UP National Writers Workshops are eligible. Some of these qualifications may be waived in exceptionally meritorious cases, with the unanimous concurrence of the UP ICW Fellows, Associates, and Advisers.
REQUIREMENTS – Applicants must submit (1) five copies plus digital file (12 points, double-spaced, 8 x 11) of one original unpublished manuscript (short story, poem, creative nonfiction, play, or novel) to be discussed during the workshop – this manuscript should not have been submitted to a publishing house or any other workshop, and should form at least 20% of a book project in progress; (2) five copies plus digital file (12 points, double-spaced, 8 x 11) of an essay on "What I write, how, and why?" in relation to the work in progress. This essay will be the basis for a 20-minute presentation that the fellow is expected to do during the workshop; (3) photocopies of the applicant’s published work, including publication details; and (4) application form.
Only writers who go through the complete application process will be considered for fellowship.
Fellows must be present for the full duration of the weeklong workshop.
All fellows are entitled to a modest stipend, free hotel accommodation, and free transportation from UP Diliman to Baguio City and back.
The deadline for submission is October 31, 2011.
The U.P. National Writers Workshop was reformatted five years ago to address a dearth in the mentoring of writers in mid-career. What before was a workshop that honed emerging talent mostly from the nation’s universities and colleges is now a workshop that focuses on writers who have already published, or are on the verge of publishing, a book or have won major literary awards. In effect, the new format caters to writers who have moved up from the beginner level.
The UP ICW is the only institution that offers a workshop of this caliber in the country. The function for beginner writers that the UP ICW vacated for the new workshop format is filled by the workshops held by other writing centers from the other universities in the country.
Aside from subjecting works in progress to workshops with the most admired names in Philippine contemporary literature, the UP National Writers Workshop provides a venue for discussion of the participants’ respective writing processes. It also allows participants to interact with local writers through special activities organized by the UP ICW and Baguio-based groups. As an outreach activity, the UP ICW has partnered with the University of the Philippines Baguio to hold an annual public lecture by an eminent writer. The lecture coincides with the workshop and is held in universities and colleges in and around Baguio City.

Malate Literary Folio, the official literary and visual arts publication of De La Salle University-Manila is inviting everyone to its annual celebration of the Filipino language entitled “Reinkarnasyon ng Salita”. The event would be in tandem with the First Issue Book Launch of Malate. It will be held on August 13, 2011, Saturday at Yadu Bag, The Collective, Malugay St. Makati.
Reinkarnasyon ng Salita is Malate’s own way of celebrating the Buwan ng Wika. Through this celebration, Malate expresses its pride in the Filipino culture through readings of different literary pieces and a showcase of the visual artworks published in the current folio. The event would also feature performances by the members of Malate, bands like Krock and Fando & Lis and many more. A guest speaker would also be invited to share his/her expertise and opinions regarding the state of the Filipino language today.

British Red Cross International Day of the Disappeared Creative Writing Competition

The International Day of the Disappeared (30 August) is a reminder that a great number of people are missing as a result of conflicts around the world.
Each year, the Red Cross marks the day by commemorating those who have gone missing in armed conflicts or other situations of violence – and remembers the plight of their families.
Creative writing competition
The International Day of the Disappeared (30 August) commemorates people who have gone missing throughout the world in situations of violence and armed conflict. It is a reminder of the hundreds of thousands of families who are unaware of the fate of their loved ones, and organisations like the Red Cross who work to restore family contact between separated family members.
Give your voice to the thousands of missing people throughout the world by entering our creative writing competition.
Rules
There are only two rules:
1. Your writing should be based on the theme of ‘the disappeared’.
2. It should fit onto one side of A4 paper.
So this could be poetry, prose, a comic strip, a short story, an excerpt from your diary, a song... anything at all that you can write on the chosen theme.
Entries can be either typed or handwritten. Drawings and illustrations are welcomed, but remember – this is a creative writing competition – so these should accompany your message, not be the message. Translations from any language into English are also welcomed, either your own work or that of a friend.
The competition is open to everyone and all ages. The deadline is 30 August.
Prizes and judging
The winning entry will receive a £50 cash prize and a £50 national book voucher.
A compendium of the top entries will be compiled and published for International Day of the Disappeared 2012. All authors of published entries will receive a free copy.
Entries will be judged by a small panel of judges, including local authors and Red Cross representatives.

Call for Creative and Critical Writings: Nor’eastern Post (India)
I am joining as the Literary Editor of the Nor’eastern Post – a daily soon to be launched from Guwahati. It promises to be a regional publication with a national and international reach. My aim as literary editor will be to showcase the literatures produced in the Northeastern region to a wider audience as well as to make readers in the region aware of the richness of their own literatures. Literature from the Northeast is usually treated as a homogenous entity, but my effort will be to bring out the diversity within it. It is hoped that this will establish a dialogue of equality and harmony among the many constituents producing the various ‘literatures’ of the Northeast.
This is a call to readers to share their creative and critical writings as well as translations with the newspaper.
- The critical writings/features could relate to any aspect of the literature of any of the regions within the Northeast. They may also deal with particular writers or texts or genres.
- In creative writing, poetry submission is particularly welcome, although space permitting, we might also occasionally carry pieces of fiction/memoir/literary non-fiction.
- We will also devote considerable attention to translations of classic and contemporary literary pieces. The translators must however, have acquired the necessary permissions from the original copyright holder. A short translator’s note and adequate information about the original author are also required.

You are invited to contribute poems, essays, stories, songs, whatever short form you like, to an anthology gathered in support of the people of Gaza and Occupied Palestine. This project is intended to share information about the situation of the people of Gaza and the occupied Palestinian territories, both directly and through exploring the parallel situations and experiences of other people and nations.
Please send up to three pages of work, in any genre. For longer work, please submit an excerpt of three pages, with a description of the full work including number of pages. An abstract is also acceptable.
Our intent in pursuing this project is to relieve the sense of isolation and neglect that results from the long term and increasingly brutal conduct “for security reasons” that the people of Gaza endure.

The topic is emotions, feelings, joys and sorrows related to any sports, or you could write a fictional account of how a particular sport was invented, or on any game that's played only in one particular country/town which no one else knows about.
Submissions are open for short stories, poems and essays. There is a selection process through which all the entries go through and only the selected entries are published. The Anthology is scheduled to be published in October 2011.

The Davao Writers Guild, in cooperation with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, will hold a Writers Workshop on October 11 to 15, 2011. Deadline for application is September 15, 2011.
Who may apply
Fifteen writing fellows will be selected for the workshop. Applicants must be residents of Davao and Mindanao.
Only two slots are allotted to fellows within Mindanao but residing outside Davao. They will receive transportation allowance of up to P1,000.
Fellows will receive free board and lodging for the duration of the workshop.
Past fellows of the Davao Writers Workshop are not eligible to apply for the workshop. However, they may volunteer to help run the workshop.
Categories
We will accept submissions in four categories: fiction, essay, poetry and one-act play. They may be in English, Bisaya, or Tagalog.
Applicant portfolios must therefore contain:
* 2 short stories (1,000 words to 5,000 words); OR
* 2 essays (1,000 words to 5,000 words); OR
* 2 one-act play (10 minutes to 30 minutes play time); OR

Multi-Genre Reading: Ching-In Chen at Queer Border Crossings

Asia Writes's featured writer Ching-in Chen will be at the multi-genre reading event "Queer Border Crossings" on July 14th at The Asian American Writers' Workshop, New York.
Even as New York becomes the largest state to legalize same sex marriage, the queer body remains a point of contention in public policy and literature. In writing the queer body, the borders that separate pertain not just to gender and sexuality, but also race and voice, form and genre. In this multi-genre reading, Ronaldo Wilson, Rahul Mehta, Kit Yan, and Ching-In Chen cross borders of both gender and genre. Avant-garde poet Ronaldo Wilson reads from Poems of the Black Object, winner of the Asian American Literary Award--detailing the nitty-gritty of bodily fluids, illicit subcultures, and dream states to critique the objectification of the black queer body. Short story writer Rahul Mehta will take you across continents, uncomfortable family gatherings, and bitter generational rifts to reveal the growing pains of being gay and Indian American in Quarantine. Multi-genre poet Ching-In Chen plays with form and theatrical jazz aesthetics in her latest work. A Hawaiian spoken word artist lost in New York, Kit Yan’s love poems, dirty sex stories, and comedic tales of his childhood are raw, real, heart-wrenching, and unforgettable.
Ching-In Chen is the author of The Heart's Traffic (Arktoi Books/Red Hen Press) and co-editor of The Revolution Starts at Home: Confronting Intimate Violence Within Activist Communities (South End Press). Through touching love poems, dirty sex accounts, and comedic tales of his childhood–Kit takes you on a journey that is raw, heart-wrenching, and unforgettable. Kit’s work has been taught at universities coast to coast. Asia Writes's featured writer Ching-in Chen will be at the multi-genre reading event "Queer Border Crossings" on July 14th at The Asian American Writers' Workshop, New York.
Even as New York becomes the largest state to legalize same sex marriage, the queer body remains a point of contention in public policy and literature. In writing the queer body, the borders that separate pertain not just to gender and sexuality, but also race and voice, form and genre. In this multi-genre reading, Ronaldo Wilson, Rahul Mehta, Kit Yan, and Ching-In Chen cross borders of both gender and genre. Avant-garde poet Ronaldo Wilson reads from Poems of the Black Object, winner of the Asian American Literary Award--detailing the nitty-gritty of bodily fluids, illicit subcultures, and dream states to critique the objectification of the black queer body. Short story writer Rahul Mehta will take you across continents, uncomfortable family gatherings, and bitter generational rifts to reveal the growing pains of being gay and Indian American in Quarantine. Multi-genre poet Ching-In Chen plays with form and theatrical jazz aesthetics in her latest work. Deadline Extended: NCCA Writers' Prize 2011 (Philippines)

The NCCA Writers’ Prize is a biennial award given to five (5) writers, one for each of the following categories: Poetry (Waray language), Novel ( Cebuano language), Essay (Bicolano language), Short Story (Panay language) and Drama (Filipino language). The award, in the amount of TWO HUNDRED FIFTY THOUSAND PESOS gross, will assist the winner during the writing stage of the project. The award is good for one year, after which a manuscript of the writing project will be submitted to the NCCA for possible publication or staging. The Novel manuscript shall be submitted to the Man Asia Literary Prize as official entry of the Philippines, after it has been translated into the English language and published by the NCCA.
The NCCA, in line with its mission to “encourage the continuing development of a pluralistic culture by the people themselves,” will be creating the opportunity to have a direct hand in the development of Filipino literature. With the cash award, the NCCA Writers Prize winners will be freed from the demands of their work and shall be able to focus on the writing of the complete manuscript for one year.
Eligibility
The award is open to all Filipino writers, of legal age, except to the officers and members of the NCCA Secretariat and the incumbent Executive Council Members of the NCCA Committee on Literary Arts.
Mechanics
For the 2011 NCCA Writers Prize competition, the following shall be the requirements in the submission of entries:
1. Applicants must submit an accomplished application form, which is available at the NCCA Planning, Policy Formulation, and Programming Division (P/PFPD) (download application form), together with the applicant’s curriculum vitae; with a 3 – 5 page concept paper discussing the rationale and significance of the project, and the initial output of the project which shall be submitted in four (4) printed copies. For 2011, the categories and the expected initial output for each category are:

3. Short Story – Panay language, first three chapters with a total minimum of 50 pages

All the sample works shall be in typewritten form. Spacing shall be double space, Font shall be Arial 11. Manuscript and concept paper shall not bear the name of the applicant in any of the pages. All manuscripts received with identifying marks shall be disqualified.
2. Applicants are allowed to apply only in one (1) category.
3. Applications will be evaluated by an Ad Hoc Screening Committee, the lists of the members of the Screening Committee for each category shall be provided by the Committee on Literary Arts. There will be three members of the Ad-Hoc Screening Committee per category.
4. The Award will be released in four tranches, with the first tranche to be given during the Awards Ceremony at the beginning of the writing period and the succeeding tranches upon submission of the following percentage of the writing project:

3rd tranche - 75% of the writing project
4th tranche - 100% of the writing project
5. The NCCA shall give the awardees one year to finish their manuscripts. The NCCA will allow a maximum extension of six (6) months only with written justification from the awardee.
6. Completed manuscript by the winners, which means that it is 100% completed, must be submitted in two forms: Two (2) printed copies and two (2) electronic copies in MSWord format in a diskette. The completed project output shall be as follows:

Upon submission of the positive evaluation of the Reader for the second and third tranches, the corresponding amounts shall be released immediately to the winner. However, for the fourth tranche, the same will be released only upon completion of evaluation of the completed manuscript by the Reader. Revisions, however, may be recommended by the Reader. Only upon final approval of the completed manuscript shall the final tranche be released to the winner.

Lit Up Singapore 2011 Opens July 16th

Lit Up Singapore 2011, now in its third year, is organised by Word Forward and The Writers Centre Singapore.
Last year this 10-day long Festival attracted more than 10,000 people who attended and participated in a very broad range of literary discussions, workshops, poetry slams, and other literature-focused activities.
These events were led by a host of well-established national and international writers and performers covering all literature genres, from poetry and novel/short-story writing, to film and drama.
The Festival's general aims are to:
Invite established national and international writers and performers to inspire and share their skills and knowledge with local young and emerging writers and audiences
Make emerging writers the focus of a literary arts festival, by empowering them as writers, poets, performers, directors, actors, hosts, moderators and volunteers.

This year sampad is delighted to be celebrating the 150th anniversary of the birth of Rabindranath Tagore with Inspired by Tagore an international writing competition. Tagore was a hugely influential South Asian poet and many sampad projects have celebrated his legacy or been sparked by a line of his poetry.
Entry forms with full details can be downloaded below or email inspiredbytagore@sampad.org.uk The closing date is 31 January 2012 and any writer from the age of 8 onwards, with an interest in South Asian Culture, can enter.
There are 2 categories: one for writers aged between 8 and 15, one for writers aged 16 and over.
Entries can be poetry, short stories or reportage, and writers can submit up to 6 pieces of work, maximum length 400 words, using Tagore’s poetry and writing as a starting point.

The copyright of each piece remains with the author. Authors of the winning works will grant sampad the right to publish or broadcast the works. Other uses of the pieces are subject to permission from sampad.

Call for Submissions: The Malate Literary Folio Tomo XVIII, Bilang 1 Issue (Philippines)
Deadline: 13 July 2011
The Malate Literary Folio, the official literary and visual arts publication of De La Salle University, is inviting interested writers and artists to submit their works of art, photography, fiction, non-fiction and poetry for possible inclusion in the Tomo XVIII, Bilang 1 Issue, which will be released in August this year. The deadline of submissions will be on or before July 13, 2011 (Wednesday). Previously published material is acceptable.
Hereunder are guidelines that we hope would address most concerns:
1. Contributors are kindly advised to submit works to the following email address: dengqueddeng@gmail.com, with the following subject: Submission_Full Name_Title of work (e.g. Submission_James Sanchez_Autobiography). Contributors may also submit the original work (for art/photo) to the Malate Office at Rm. 503-A Bro. Connon Hall, De La Salle University-Manila.
2. Kindly indicate your contact info (landline/mobile) for faster advisory from the editor if and when the work will be published. The editorial board will only contact (via email notification) contributors whose respective works have been accepted for publication.
3. We welcome entries in Filipino or English for Fiction, Non-fiction, or Poetry.
4. Submissions must be sent as .DOC, .RTF, .PDF files for typewritten works and high resolution (300dpi) .JPG, or .PNG files for photographs and artworks unless otherwise required by the nature of the work.
