- Submit only original unpublished short fiction written in English. ‘Unpublished’ is defined as not having previously appeared in part or in full in any print or digital media (including online refereed markets, blogs or any social media).
- No multiple submissions. Submit only one piece of fiction for consideration.
- Short stories only. Open theme, any genre.
- Story word count cannot exceed 7500 words. Our preferred word count is in the range of 3500 to 5000 words.
- Submissions should be formatted as Word Document files (.doc, .docx) or in Rich Text Format (.rtf) in simple fonts.
- Submissions must be accompanied by a cover letter that includes your name, your preferred byline and contact information.

- Deadline for submissions is midnight of June 30, 2013. Our reading period begins immediately afterwards. Letters of acceptance or regret will follow.

Call for Entries: 2013 Maningning Miclat Trilingual Poetry Competition (P28,000 top prize | Philippines)

The Maningning Miclat Art Foundation is calling on young poets 28 years old and younger to submit their entry to the 2013 Maningning Miclat Trilingual Poetry Competition. The Maningning Award, handed out yearly since 2003, honors China-born Maningning Miclat, a poet of 3 languages, a published essayist, a prize-winning visual artist, and teacher/translator/interpreter.
RULES OF THE CONTEST:
1.The contest is open to poets of all nationalities, age 28 and below.
2.There are three divisions in the awards:
a) Filipino b) English c) Chinese
3.An entry must consist of at least eight (8) but not more than twelve (12) poems for the Filipino and English divisions, and at least five (5) but not more than eight (8) for the Chinese division.
4.Authors may join all the divisions but can submit only one (1) entry in every division.
5.All entries should be original in every language and not a translation of another entry.
6.A work which has been awarded a prize in another contest is not qualified for the awards.
7.Published or unpublished works may be entered in the contest. If published, the date of publication should be within 2012-2013.
8.All entries should be submitted in four (4) copies, double spaced on 8 ½ x 11 inches bond paper with one inch margin on all sides and the page number typed consecutively, e.g., 1 of 10, 2 of 10, and so on, together with an electronic copy (CD or USB) of the poems.
9. Font should be ARIAL or TIMES NEW ROMAN, and the font size should be 12.
10. Entry should be submitted with pen name only and not real name. Real name and pen name should be submitted in a separate sealed envelope together with a biodata, copy of birth certificate, 2” x 2” photo and a notarized declaration of originality and authenticity of authorship of the entry.
11.Entries must be addressed to the Maningning Miclat Art Foundation, Inc. (MMAFI) , 2/F, Mile long Building, Amorsolo St., Legaspi Village, Makati City not later than April 15, 2013. Entries sent by mail or courier should be postmarked/invoiced not later than April 8, 2013.
12.Entries submitted via e-mail should be an RTF (Rich Text Format) or a Word Document file and should be sent as an attachment together with the author’s biodata and scanned copies of birth certificate, 2” x 2” photo and notarized certification of originality or authenticity of authorship of entry. The original copy of the notarized certification should then be sent to MMAFI thru mail. Entries submitted via e-mail should be transmitted not later than April 15, 2013.
13.Submitted copies of winning entries shall remain with and become the property of MMAFI. Copyright of the works remains with the author but the latter grants, assigns and transfers into MMAFI the right without necessity of any payment other than the prize which may have been awarded to publish any winning entry or selection or portion thereof as it may at its discretion determine; to make the work available for downloading on the Internet or other electronic medium; and /or to allow students to make copies for research or in connection with their school requirements.
14.Plagiarism is anathema to the contest and MMAFI has the right of action against the author, if it may be later on discovered that said person is not the creator or owner of the copyright to the winning work. The Foundation shall not be liable to any court action if a third party files a case against the winner who plagiarized the work of the said third party.
15.There will only be one Grand Prize winner for each division and the prize is PhP 28,000.00 and a Julie Lluch sculpture trophy per winning entry. The grand winners and the 2nd and 3rd Prize for each division will receive special hardbound edition of the books Voice from the Underworld ( Maningning C. Miclat, Anvil, 2000, 2002 ), Beauty for Ashes: Remembering Maningning ( edited by Mario Ignacio Miclat & Romulo Baquiran, Jr., Anvil, 2001 ), Beyond the Great Wall ( Mario, Alma, Maningning & Banaue Miclat, Anvil, 2006, 2007 ), and Secrets of the Eighteen Mansions (Mario I. Miclat, Anvil, 2010, 2011 ).
16.The Board of Judges shall have the discretion not to award any prize if in its judgement no meritorious entry had been submitted.
17.MMAFI has the sole right to designate the persons who shall constitute the Board of Judges in each division of the contest. The decision of the majority of the Board of Judges in all divisions shall be final.
18.The names of the winners and the members of the Board of Judges shall be announced on September 25, 2013.

The Bienvenido N. Santos Creative Writing Center (BNSCWC) and Literature Department of De La Salle University-Manila announce call for literary submissions for Tag-araw 4, the MFA Creative Writing Journal.
Open to current and MFA graduates of DLSU-Manila, submissions can be in different genres such as poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, drama, and everything in between. As much as possible, no limits are imposed on the number of pages for each work or number of entries for each individual. However, writers using longer forms (such as novels) are encouraged to submit only an excerpt (e.g. one or two chapters) that can best illustrate the novel’s thematic and stylistic preoccupations. Only literary submissions will be entertained; hence, critical papers will not be accepted.
All submitted works will be subjected to screening and editing process by the editors; the issue will then be refereed by the associates of the BNSCWC. The target online publication of Tag-Araw 4 is on December 2013.

High Chair 18 will be a special issue on poetry comics. We are inviting writers and artists to submit poems, essays, and reviews for possible inclusion in the eighteenth issue of High Chair’s online poetry journal (www.highchair.com.ph), which will be released in May this year.
We are interested in individual submissions and collaborations that explore and rethink the interplay (and limits thereof) between text and image resulting in poems, works that employ graphics as a constituent of poetry and exploit the affinities of poetry and comics’ in their attention to and use of space, ellipses, segmentation, juxtaposition, braiding, etc., as opposed merely to illustrated poems and visual or concrete poetry.

Now on its 63rd year, the country’s premier and longest-running literary contest, the Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature or Palanca Awards, opens its doors again to both amateur and seasoned writers who wish to showcase their talent in crafting beautiful literature.
The Carlos Palanca Foundation, Inc., (Palanca Foundation),its organizer and sponsor, has announced that it is now accepting entries for the Awards’ regular categories, as follows:
The Foundation is now accepting entries in the Novel and Nobela categories as well. Starting this year, these Novel categories will be opened for entries every two years.
Furthermore, to encourage the youth to hone their creative gift early in life, the Palanca Awards welcomes essays under the Kabataan Division – its special division for young writers below 17 years old. This year’s Kabataan Essay theme for the English category is “What is the Role of Literature in the Development of a Nation?” and “Ano ang Papel na Ginagampanan ng Panitikan sa Pag-unlad ng Isang Bansa?” for the Filipino category.

The Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism (PCIJ) invites mid-career and senior Filipino journalists, citizen media, and bloggers to apply for a three-day training seminar-workshop on Basic Investigative Reporting.
Applicants from print, TV, radio, and online media are welcome.
A series of four three-day seminars will be conducted in Luzon, the Visayas, Mindanao, and Metro Manila from June to September 2013. Fifteen participants will be invited to each of the seminars from across media platforms, gender, province of assignment, and media organization.
Through combined onsite and field learning sessions, the seminar aims to enhance the participants' investigative reporting skills and practice and offer a framework for analyzing media killings and safety issues in the context of governance, the culture of impunity, and the presence of political clans and private armed groups in many parts of the country.
The seminar also seeks to highlight the role of the police and the Commission on Human Rights as vital sources of journalists. The seminar will feature lecture-discussions and workshops to identify potential risks and practical safety tips when covering dangerous assignments.
A Story Development Workshop will give participants an opportunity to pitch story proposals that the PCIJ may consider for fellowship grants and editorial supervision. Experts from the academe, national media organizations, the police, human rights agencies and organizations, and data repository agencies will lead the discussions.
The seminar graduates will be accorded priority slots in the subsequent Advanced Investigative Reporting Seminars that PCIJ will conduct in 2014.
This seminar series draws support from the US-based National Endowment for Democracy (NED).
WHO CAN APPLY?

Seeking Applications from Filipino Environmental Journalists: EYP Training Course/ "Flag It!" Project (fully funded | Philippines)

The European Youth Press is currently looking for 24 young environmental journalists to take part in the following training sessions of the “Flag it!” project:
To this end 48 young journalists from Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America, will be involved in a seven day training course which aims to bridge social media, technology and scientific information. The courses will be hosted as follows: in São Paulo (Brazil – 20/26 of May 2013), Lagos (Nigeria, 1/7 of July 2013), Manila (Philippines – 9/15 of September 2013) and Bucharest (Romania – 7/13 of October 2013).
The project is supported by the European Commission through the Youth in Action programme.
The call for participants for the training courses in Manila and Bucharest will be published in June 2013.
The training course will be based on the best practice provided by the Brazilian association “O Eco”, in mapping deforestation in the Amazon basin through the use of free digital mapping tools (infoamazonia.org).
THE PARTICIPANTS WILL BE INVOLVED IN SPECIFIC SESSIONS ON:
After each training course the participants will be asked to use their newly acquired skills to develop their own stories. The reportages shall be published and spread through the project website and social networks. The four most effective reports will be selected and their authors will have the chance to cover the Conference of Parties (COP 19) in Poland in November 2013.
The “Flag it!” project involves six partner organizations: the European Youth Press, the Association “O Eco” from Brazil, the Philippines Network of Environmental Journalists (PNEJ), the Nigerian Association of Science Journalists (NASJ), the Association of Students at Journalism and Communication Studies (ASJC) from Romania and the “Forum for European Journalism Students” from Latvia.
Each partner works in its target area, to provide (young) journalists with experiences and opportunities to promote their active involvement in society and their access to profession.

The INWW introduces a new format this year. There are 18 slots available for writers who have attended regional writers workshops and whose works are unpublished. Six (6) INWW alumni from across the regions are welcome to send their works in progress along with a brief paper on their creative process.
Applicants may submit five (5) poems; one, one-act play; one short fiction, and an excerpt of a novel in progress in any of these languages: Filipino, English, Cebuano, Waray, Hiligaynon, Kinaray-a, Akyanon, Chabacano, Maranao or Higaunon.
Except for works in Filipino and in English, please provide translations of your works in either Filipino or in English. Those submitting excerpts of novels should provide a one-page summary of the novel.

IEN Asian Conference and Seminar Essay Competition

Integrity Education Network (IEN) is the world’s largest and fastest growing network of educators and universities committed to teaching integrity. It has grown to 307 universities and integrity-focused NGOs in over 60 countries in early 2012; 213 in Europe and Central Asia, 109 in Indonesia, 45 in China, and 13 in the Arab World. Our individual scholars have grown to 980; 400 in China; 218 in Indonesia; 30 in Arab World and 350 ECA and Africa. Over 25,000 students receive integrity education annually as a direct result of network activities.
Integrity is still a contested idea until now. However, we define organisational integrity as the set of characteristics that improves trustworthiness to stakeholders. In our approach, institutionalizing integrity requires the alignment of Accountability, “Enabling stakeholders to check that we do what we say we do”; Corruption control, “Doing it without corruption”; Competence, “Doing it well”; and Ethicality, “Doing it with honour”.
As higher education plays a great role in introducing Integrity and Anti-Corruption Education, collaboration of universities might also be positively provided better impact to ASEAN Integrity for Integration. In the light of those goals, this call for essays is arranged.
EXPECTED OUTCOMES:
BENEFITS FOR TOP TEN ESSAYS: Ten best essays will be selected to receive a net-book each and will have an opportunity to present their essays during the conference. All accommodation and transportation will be covered by TIRI.

FORMAT PAPER AND FOOTNOTES:
- British English should be used.
- Length : 10-15 pages
- Font type: Times New Roman, single line spacing.
- Font size text and footnotes: 12 pt. (text) and 10 pt. (footnotes).
- Alignment text and footnotes: justified.
- Paragraphs should be separated by a single line.
- Common terms (general and legal) may be abbreviated. The same abbreviation should be used throughout the essays.
- Insert footnotes when necessary (after a word, part of sentence, full sentence). Footnote numbers should consistently be placed after punctuation marks.
- To ensure a sufficient degree of uniformity while not imposing the methods of citation used in one single country, footnotes should be written as follow:
- Monograph or textbook:
- Author, title, subtitle, edition, publisher, place of publication, year of publication, page (p.).
- Journal articles or edited volume:
- Author, title, subtitle, name of journal, year, volume, page (p.).
- On-line journal
- For on-line journal, please give publication details as for articles in printed journals. Add the web address and indicate the date on which the article has most recently been accessed.
- Bibliography should be written at the end of the essay with the same methods as in the footnotes. Exclude the pages.

Join Author at Once (High School)! In one afternoon, our resource speaker will teach aspiring writers (currently in high school) how to write compelling short fiction, update them on literature trends and responsible writing and tell them about their local and international publishing options (print and digital)
Students who complete the workshop are encouraged to submit a finished story. Selected pieces will be featured in a compilation book, to be released this year.
Author at Once will be held at the iAcademy campus on Ayala Avenue on April 20, 2013. Admission is free, so sign up to reserve a slot. This workshop is open to high school students.
