RIDE 3 will be published in print, as well as Kindle, Nook, iBooks, Kobo, and whatever other format seems like a good idea. The only requirement is that a bicycle or bicycle subculture must feature prominently in the story.

Any genre, any gender, any length up to about 12,000 words, any setting, any time period, any kind of cycling. The more diversity—of locations, cycling cultures, story genres—the better. The best eight or ten stories or poems will be published.

LENGTH: Anything up to around 12,000 words will be considered. However, it’s easier to take a chance on shorter work—so if you haven’t published much, your odds are probably better with flash fiction than with a multilayered epic.

EDITING: If the material can't be improved, no notes will be given.

PAYMENT: $75 above 4,000 words; $50 for 2,000-3,999 words; $20 for 1-1,999 words.

PUBLICITY: Please be up for minor publicity stuff, which shouldn’t involve more work than suggesting places where review copies can be sent and participating in the recent “Three Questions” series at the blog.

Wasafiri is an international literary magazine that provides consistent coverage to Britain's diverse cultural heritage and publishes a range of diasporic and migrant writing worldwide. Since its inception in 1984, it has focused on writing as a form of cultural travelling (Wasafiri is Kiswahili for 'travellers') and extended the boundaries of literary culture.

NEW WRITING PRIZE 2013

Renowned worldwide for featuring some of the best and brightest new talent, Wasafiri launched an annual New Writing Prize as part of its 25th anniversary celebrations in 2009. Since Wasafiri was first published in 1984, it has consistently aimed to shift the contours of established literary canons and remapped the borders of international contemporary writing, creating new imaginative spaces and publishing some of the most promising new literary voices. In the words of acclaimed author Aminatta Forna, ‘In a world which gives voice only to the few, Wasafiri comes to us like a choir of thousands singing the stories of everywhere.’

HOW TO ENTER:

The competition is open to anyone worldwide who has not published a complete book. We are looking for creative submissions in one of three categories: Poetry, Fiction or Life Writing. Simply fill in the entry form and send it to us with your entry and fee of UK Sterling £6.00 if entering one category, £10.00 for two and £15.00 for three categories. The closing date is 5pm GMT on 26 July 2013. Entrants who are visually impaired or who are prevented from typing through disability can enter work on audio CD.

PRIZES: £300 will be awarded to the winner of each category and their work will be published in Wasafiri.

CONDITIONS OF ENTRY:

• The competition is open to any nationality and any age group.
• Word limit is 3000 maximum.
• Work submitted must be previously unpublished, original and in English. It should not have been submitted to any other competition.
• Work must be typed, double-spaced, on A4 paper, single sided only etc.
• Do not write your name, or provide any other form of identification on your manuscript. All submissions will be considered without the judges knowing the identity of the entrant.
• Work will only be accepted if accompanied by an official entry form and fee

THRESHOLDS is the only online forum dedicated to the reading, writing and study of the short story form. We are now inviting submissions to our 2013 Feature Writing Competition.

This year we are delighted to announce a total prize fund of £1,200. £500 will be awarded to the winning essay in each category:

• Author Profile (exploring the life, work and influence of a single short story writer) AND
• We Recommend (personal recommendations of a collection, anthology, group of short stories or a single short story)

A prize of £100 will also go to one runner-up in each category. The winning and runner-up essays and shortlist will be published on the THRESHOLDS Forum during 2013.

Please read the competition rules (below) and the general THRESHOLDS Submission Guidelines carefully before submitting.

The judges hope to see a range of styles and approaches. They will be looking, above all, at the quality of the prose in each feature submitted, the insights offered, and the author’s ability to engage his/her readers.

COMPETITION RULES:

• All entries must be submitted by email as a PDF or Word document (.doc, .docx or .rtf only) attachment and sent to thresholds@chi.ac.uk, with the subject line ‘Feature Competition’.
• Entries must be received by midnight GMT on 27 March 2013.
• There is no entry fee.
• Maximum word count is 2,000, with a minimum of 750. Writers may submit a maximum of 3 essays.
• Please note: the Competition is open for feature essay entries only. Short stories will not be accepted.
• Work should be double spaced and in a minimum of 11 point font. All pages should be numbered.
• The stories or collections under discussion may be either contemporary or classic, and can be in print or out of print.
• Entries must be accompanied by a separate title page containing the following information: name and email address of the writer; title of entry(ies); category of each entry — Author Profile or We Recommend.
• Entries will be judged anonymously. Your name, address or email address should NOT appear on the manuscript.
• Entries cannot be altered once they have been submitted.
• Entries must be original and unpublished. Work that has appeared on the internet (apart from in a personal blog) is considered published and therefore is not eligible. Simultaneous submissions are not accepted (i.e. features submitted to multiple journals/magazines simultaneously).
• The entrant warrants to THRESHOLDS’s editors that the essay is original to him/her, that he/she has the full power to agree to the Competition rules of entry, and that he/she is the sole author of the feature essay.
• The entrant warrants to THRESHOLDS’s editors that his/her essay is in no way whatever a violation of any existing copyright and that it contains nothing libelous.
• The judges’ decisions are final and no discussion will be entered into once work has been submitted. The judges reserve the right not to make the award if the quality of entries does not merit it.
• The Competition is open to writers of any nationality writing in English, 16 years old and over at the time of the closing date.
• University of Chichester staff may not apply.
• The names of the winners, runners-up and shortlisted writers will be published on The Forum.
• The shortlist will be announced in April, and the winning writer will be notified by the end of April.

Are you a student with great ideas on the future of cyber security policy? Have you conducted research on how to measure the security impact of policies around the world? If so, read on for how you can win $5,000 cash for your research in this essay contest.

OVERVIEW:

Cybersecurity is a policy priority for many governments but there is limited understanding of whether and how policy choices impact cyber risk outcomes. While many countries have made significant investments in the development and implementation of cybersecurity policy regimes, cybercriminals continue to make headway. With that in mind, policymakers are left to question the impact of their policy investments. Given this unknown, many policymakers have struggled to choose policies that will have the greatest positive outcome in managing cyber risk.

At the same time, the cyber ecosystem is undergoing tremendous change. The growth in Internet users across Asia, Africa, and Latin America; the proliferation of connected devices; and the explosive rise in Internet traffic are just a few of the mega-trends reshaping the Internet. Accordingly, regardless of today’s policy challenges and solutions, tomorrow’s landscape is likely to present new risks and opportunities.

WHAT IS THE CONTEST?

Microsoft is looking for original research about these cybersecurity policy challenges from university students at any stage in their educational development. Specifically, research should address one or both of the following questions; in both instances, preference will be given to responses that integrate quantitative analysis using publically-available cybersecurity data and research, such as the Microsoft Security Intelligence Report (SIR):

• Which cybersecurity policy choices have the most impact on cybersecurity outcomes and, based upon your answer, are there “actionable” recommendations for policymakers?
• For example, have national-level regimes for securing government networks had a meaningful impact on cybersecurity? How might those regimes be improved?
• Additionally, for example, can cybersecurity policies impact user-level security? And if so, how?
• Given the growth in people, devices, and data connected to the Internet, how should policymakers adapt current approaches, and are there elements missing from the current policy landscape that should be created, or existing instruments that should be deprecated?
• For example, many global-level cybersecurity policy regimes were created when most Internet users were based on North America and Europe; will the rise in Internet users in Asia, Africa, and Latin America require changes to these regimes?
• Additionally, for example, cybersecurity policies have been optimized for a desktop-centric world, where the computing machine, their operating systems, and often their users were fixed within a geography. What changes are necessary to accommodate a more mobile-based world?

Judging Criteria:

• 50.00% - Novel analysis: whether the entry demonstrates original thinking when compared against known research and writing about cybersecurity policy
• 25.00% - Future relevance: whether the entry speaks to challenges beyond current-day problems and presents options for the future
• 25.00% - Quantitative basis: whether the entry effectively uses quantitative data

The decisions of the judges are final and binding. If we do not receive a sufficient number of entries meeting the entry requirements, we may, at our discretion, select fewer winners than described above.

In the event of a tie between any eligible entries, an additional judge will break the tie based on the judging criteria described above. The decisions of the judges are final and binding. The National Academy of Human Resources (NAHR) announces the 2013 Ram Charan HR Essay Contest. Essays are requested from university undergrads and graduate students globally majoring in Human Resources, Industrial/Labor Relations or related fields for the following topic:

How are electronic technology and social media affecting:

• The employment relationship (from hiring to engagement to retention) between employers and employees?
• The roles, responsibilities and contributions of human resources organizations?

Essays will be evaluated and judged by a panel of distinguished HR professionals – Fellows of the National Academy of Human Resources (NAHR). The NAHR is an honorific organization which recognizes individuals and institutions of distinction in Human Resources for exceptional professional achievement.

Essay contest winners will be announced at the NAHR annual installation of new Fellows on November 7, 2013 in New York City. Contest winners’ expenses will be paid to attend the ceremony. The award is named for Dr. Ram Charan, a Distinguished Fellow of the NAHR and a world renowned author, speaker and business advisor. For over 35 years Dr. Charan has consulted with some of the world’s most successful leaders and companies.

Poetry Foundation Ghana announces its inaugural (2013) Ghana Poetry Prize. This will be an award of Gh ₵ 2,000 (equivalent to $ 1,000). This is built on the hugely successful 2012 Online Competition which was done under the name Ghana Poetry Awards.

The aim of this prize is to support younger emerging poets. The Prize is sponsored by Poetry Foundation Ghana and we hope to increase our Prize when we have enough funds from other sources. People with interest in poetry are invited to help in this direction and we will be grateful for your sponsorship.

This contest is open to anyone, anywhere in the world. The submission - maximum of two (2) poems - must not be more than 30 lines long. It is free to enter. The deadline is June 30, 2013

Students from any country in the world studying on an A Level or IB course are invited to write an essay of between 1,000 to 2,500 words on one of the topics below calling on key elements of their study, examples from the world around them and imaginative discussion.

ESSAY COMPETITION

The Society launched their annual Young Economist of the Year competition in 2007, in association with Tutor2U, the O2 Smarta100 2011 winner online teaching resource business. This prestigious essay writing competition invites students currently studying for A Levels and the International Baccalaureate in all subjects to write on a major current problem or topic of concern. The winner of the Young Economist of the Year wins £1,000, with runners-up each receiving £500.

Students are invited to write an essay of between 1,000 to 2,500 words, on a subject set by the President of the Royal Economic Society, calling on key elements of their A Level or International Baccalaureate courses, examples from the world around them and imaginative discussion. Each year's topic for the essay title will be set in the Spring term and advertised through Tutor2U and the RES website.

The winner of the Young Economist of the Year prize is announced in August each year, with the prize presentation to be made at the RES Annual Public Lecture in London in December.

THE ESSAY TOPICS FOR THIS YEAR'S COMPETITION ARE:

• Does the international mobility of talent make it impossible to tax the rich?
• Should the experience of China silence those who think that democracy is good for growth?
• Is the UK banking system too concentrated?
• Should Universities embrace market forces in deciding what to teach and how?
• Should those who object to Heathrow expansion be ``bought off’’ at taxpayer expense?
• Must “quantitative easing” end in inflation?

Students up to the age of 19 are invited to write an essay of between 1,000 to 2,500 words on one of the above topics calling on key elements of their A Level or International Baccalaureate courses, examples from the world around them and imaginative discussion. Then upload your essay to our partners Tutor2U using the YE 2013 application form.

Deadline for applications is Monday 24th June 2013(12.00 GMT).

Applications will be acknowledged by Tutor2U with results to be announced by the Royal Economic Society at the end of the summer.

On Monday the 11th March 2013 the Foyle Young Poets of the Year Award opened for entries. The prize is for young writers from across the world who have until the 31st of July 2013 to enter. Last year's competition attracted entries from a staggering 7,351 young people from 60 countries worldwide, making it one of the largest literary competitions in the world.

WRITE UP A STORM: FOYLE YOUNG POETS 2013 0PENS FOR ENTRIES!

We are delighted to announce that this year's competition will have acclaimed judges Hannah Lowe and David Morley at the helm. It is once again on the search for exciting new young poets aged 11-17. So what are you waiting for, take the chance and enter your poem!

With entries from over 7,300 young people last year from a staggering 60 countries worldwide, it is one of the largest literary competitions in the world and its importance is widely attested. Each year 100 winners (85 Commendations and 15 Overall Winners) are selected by a team of high profile judges, and receive their awards at an annual prize-giving event on National Poetry Day on the 3rd October 2013. Thanks to funding from the Foyle Foundation the competition remains completely free to enter and we are able to offer a wide range of prizes, opportunities and resources to young people and schools across the UK. We are delighted to launch new Foyle Lesson Plans based on previous winning poems - a fantastic way to inspire new voices.

Overall Winners from the 15 to 17 age category attend a week-long intensive residential Arvon course where they develop their creative writing skills alongside fellow poets. Winners aged 11-14 group benefit from poetry residencies at their school followed by distance mentoring.

HOW TO ENTER:

The competition is free to enter. Individuals may enter more than one poem, however we strongly advise that you concentrate on drafting and redrafting your poems and send only a small selection of your very best (we suggest no more than 6-8 maximum). Remember, quality is more important than quantity! Please read the full rules carefully.

RULES:

You must be aged 11-17 on the closing date of the 31st July 2013 (i.e. Under 18 years old) in order to enter. The competition closes at midnight on the 31st July 2013.

FYP is about what you want to write. So you can enter poems written in class, or poems you've written at home, from exercises or from your own imaginings. The competition is free to enter and poems can be of any length and on any theme. Individuals may enter more than one poem, however we strongly advise that you concentrate on drafting and redrafting your poems and send only a selection (we suggest no more than 6-8 absolute maximum) of your very best. Remember, quality is more important than quantity!

Please take a moment to read the full rules carefully:

• Each poem must be the original work of the author, and must not have been previously published (online on any website, blog or on social media i.e. Twitter or Facebook), broadcast on TV or radio or have won another competition.
• Entrants must be aged 11-17 on the closing date of the 31st July 2013.
• Poems must be in English and can be entered by anyone aged 11-17 from anywhere in the world (however please note that we are unable to cover the travel fees for any Winners invited to the Arvon Course).
• Competition entries cannot be returned under any circumstances so please make sure you make take note of all poems entered and send copies only.
• Please note that entries sent in by e-mail (as attachement or written in the body of email) will not be accepted under any circumstances. If you would like to enter online only entries through the formal online form at foyleyoungpoets.org/2013 will be accepted.
• Due to the large number of entrants we are unable to respond individually to submissions.
• No acknowledgment of receipt can be made for postal entries unless a stamped, self-addressed envelope is included with the entry. Please ensure the correct postage is used as late entries cannot be accepted.
• All online entries will receive an email notification of receipt if a correct email address is provided.
• The judges’ decision is final, and no correspondence will be entered into concerning this decision.
• All online entries must be received by midnight GMT on the 31st July 2013. Late entries will not be accepted under any circumstances.
• All postal entries must be post dated on or before the 31st July 2013.
• Winning poets will be notified directly between the 13th and 20th September 2013.
• Due to the sheer volume of entries, only successful entrants will not notified. Details of the full winners list will be announced publicly on the website on the 3rd October 2013.
• The copyright of each poem remains with the author. Authors of the winning poems will grant the Poetry Society permission to publish or broadcast the poems.
• All 100 winners will be invited to attend an awards ceremony on National Poetry Day, the 3rd October 2013, in London. 

FOYLE YOUNG POETS- THE PRIZES:

There are 15 Overall Winners and 85 Commended Poets.

• The 15 Overall Winners aged 11-17 will have their poems printed in the winners' anthology and all Commended Poets will have their name published inside - 20,000+ of these are sent out across the UK and beyond.
• 15-17 year olds in the Overall Winners category will attend a week-long residential course at one of the prestigious Arvon Centres - take a look at a previous course here
• 11-14 year olds in the Overall Winners category will win a short residency in their school by a leading poet followed by distance mentoring
• All 100 winners (Overall and Commended) receive a year's Youth Membership and the opportunity to contribute to our online YM magazine and our new digital platform Young Poets Network
• All 100 winners (Overall and Commended) will be invited to a prestigious Awards Ceremony in London on National Poetry Day (October)

The International Bipolar Foundation (IBPF) has as part of its mission to erase stigma associated with mental illness through public education. To that end, they have launched a global essay contest open to all high school students internationally.

“Our hope”, says Walker, President and founder of IBPF, “is that students will be interested in winning the prize and thereby research stigma in order to write the essay. In so doing, we will be educating a lot of young people and hopefully changing their perception about mental illness”.

The topic of the essay is Changing the Future of Stigma; Bipolar Disorder in 2020. First and second place winners will be judged by a panel of authors who currently write about bipolar disorder and mental illness and the winner will be announced in May to celebrate May as Mental Health Month. The contest is open to all high school students internationally.

In addition the First Place Winner will receive $500 and the Second Place Winner will receive $100.

The IHDP Secretariat's Writing Contest is open again! Young scholars are invited to take part and write an article for the third issue of the Dimensions magazine, to be published mid 2013. The issue will focus on the human dimensions of the Sustainable Development Goals that have been widely discussed in the context of the Rio+20 summit. The magazine is directed towards a wider audience, including non-scientists interested in the topic. Upon expiry of the submission deadline, the Secretariat will select up to three winners to be awarded cash prizes - and will publish their work in the magazine (print and online).

CASH PRIZES WILL BE AWARDED AS FOLLOWS:

• 1st Place - US$ 500
• 2nd Place - US$ 200
• 3rd Place - US$ 100

TOPIC:

At the UN conference on sustainable development “Rio+20” in June last year, world leaders agreed to create a set of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a means to embed sustainability into economic development. As part of the post-2015 development agenda, the SDGs are to reflect the lessons learned from the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) that are set to end in 2015. The new goals aim to address issues such as poverty eradication, energy access and renewable energies, food and water security, biodiversity, sustainable consumption, production and urbanization, as well as social exclusion and equity. An intergovernmental Open Working Group, consisting of 30 UN member country representatives will starts its work in September 2013 with support from the UN Secretary General, other UN entities and consultation with additional governments.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?

The contest is open to young scholars from all over the world (graduate students, PhD students or postdocs). Scholars from developing countries are particularly encouraged to take part.

GUIDELINES:

Articles must address a significant issue relating to the human dimensions of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). While the subject matter may cover political, technological, economic or social aspects, contestants should seek to write an article that is understandable to a non-scientific audience, offering a narrative and avoiding the use of too many technical terms. Winning articles will be written in engaging, non-scientific language, and will provide for an interesting and easy read. Contributions in the style of an academic paper will not be accepted. Submissions must be exclusive to this Writing Contest and not be published by any other outlet before the release of the magazine.

Entries are not to exceed 2,500 words and must be submitted via e-mail to secretariat@ihdp.unu.edu by 15 April 2013, including “Writing Contest” in the subject line. Contestants are asked to provide a short paragraph about themselves stating their date of birth and field of research. All submissions will be reviewed carefully. Cash prizes will be awarded to up to three winners whose work will be published in both the print and online version of the magazine (1st Place: $ 500; 2nd Place: $ 200; 3rd Place: $ 100).

Winners will be announced on the IHDP Web site and social media channels and informed via email toward the end of April.

All over the world, women are facing different types of challenges. Whether at home where they face domestic violence, or in their professional lives where they struggle to have their competencies fully recognized, or even in public life where they are not considered as equal to men, difficulties are still numerous for women in 2013. Unfortunately, Iraqi women are no exception.

You are invited to write a news article about Iraqi women who are trying to make significant changes to improve women’s rights in Iraq. You are asked to choose one (1) challenge faced by Iraqi women in their daily life and write about how women are addressing it to make things better for themselves, and their communities. UNAMI is looking for experienced journalists with excellent writing skills to share inspiring
news story about women who are working to make a difference in Iraq.

WINNERS: The winning news stories will be those reflecting best the issue (only one) faced by women in Iraq, taking into account the content and the quality of the language. All news stories will be evaluated anonymously by a UN panel.

Memoir Journal is now accepting submissions for a special issue devoted to the topic of guns. We are seeking essays addressing any aspect of guns. We believe that this complicated subject, currently the focus of national dialogue, is worthy of discussion and exploration in a literary magazine. We welcome submissions in English from writers living anywhere in the world.
