All over the world, women are facing different types of challenges. Whether at home where they face domestic violence, or in their professional lives where they struggle to have their competencies fully recognized, or even in public life where they are not considered as equal to men, difficulties are still numerous for women in 2013. Unfortunately, Iraqi women are no exception.
You are invited to write a news article about Iraqi women who are trying to make significant changes to improve women’s rights in Iraq. You are asked to choose one (1) challenge faced by Iraqi women in their daily life and write about how women are addressing it to make things better for themselves, and their communities. UNAMI is looking for experienced journalists with excellent writing skills to share inspiring
news story about women who are working to make a difference in Iraq.

Comma Press is looking for new short stories written by Iraqi writers (currently based in Iraq) to be published in both Arabic (eBook) and English translation (book and eBook) in 2014. The anthology will be edited by Hassan Blasim, and each contribution will be selected according to how well they respond to the following brief: Stories must be set in the year 2103 – exactly 100 years after the invasion of Iraq – and must present visions of how the authors imagine life in particular Iraqi cities might be, in 90 years’ time. Each story must tell a stand-alone drama, a complete human story in less than 6000 words. The culture, politics, technology, architecture, and most importantly the language must all be set firmly in the future however, as well as tied to one particular real-life city.
Ten stories will be included, set in ten different Iraqi cities; no city may be featured more than once. There is a list of possible cities to choose from below.
If you would like to write for this project, please contact both the organizers via email to check if the city hasn't already been taken. Comma can pay £200 for every story it publishes. However it cannot pay for a story if it does not ultimately publish it.
We are not just approaching science-fiction writers (although they aren't excluded). We feel that it’s just as interesting to ask literary writers to try their hand at something they’ve never considered before (like science fiction). Authors are allowed to be extravagant in their visions of the future, or to use the unfamiliar future setting as a canvas for allegorical comments on contemporary issues.
Cities to choose from (but you can pick others!): Baghdad, Basrah, Kirkuk, Sulaymaniyah, Mosul, Erbil, Najaf, Karbala, Falluja, Tikrit, Kut, Nasiriya, Amarah, Sadr City, Halabja, and Ramadi.

Media Academy-Iraq is pleased to announce that it is now accepting applications for the third Open Eye Award (2012), to encourage distinguished journalistic endeavors in Iraq.
This year’s awards will be given to Iraqi journalists who have distinguished themselves the following areas:
THE AWARD-CATEGORIES:
Articles eligible for the competition are those that address the main challenges facing Iraq as a democratic nation. This includes articles that cover topics such as economic reforms, business and economics, human rights, social and cultural topics. Articles about inspirational projects and innovative start-ups (ie: alternative energies and the environment, e-commerce, youth projects) are particularly encouraged. All forms of journalism (features, analytical articles, profiles, etc.) will be accepted.
The prize for the best media entrepreneur will go to a person who has recently implemented an innovative media project or program (print, online, TV, radio) or to a media company that has financed a project in an especially innovative and sustainable way. The project or company should enrich the media landscape in Iraq, strengthen press freedoms, characterize high quality coverage and act as a trendsetter for other media. The prize will be awarded in cooperation with PLURAL Media Services.

Thomson Foundation Inquirer Awards 2011 (for Journalists in Jordan/ Syria/ Lebanon/ Palestine/ Iraq)

Inquirer Awards 2011
To spotlight and applaud the achievements of journalists in Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Palestine and Iraq whose investigations really make a difference, the Thomson Foundation has launched The Inquirer Award 2011.
Print and television journalists as well as photojournalists from Iraq, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon and Palestine are eligible to compete for the award. All entries must feature work primarily published or broadcast in Arabic.
The Inquirer Award aims to find journalists who can demonstrate their ability to examine, in depth, a significant issue that is relevant to the region and its people.
Since 2003, the Inquirer Award has become a showcase for some of the region’s finest journalists. The Inquirer Awards past winners page lists journalists who have continued to earn the highest respect from peers and communities.
A panel of independent judges will be looking for entries that show comprehensive and thorough research, incisive interviewing techniques, and creative, well-constructed writing and presentation.
As well as receiving an Inquirer Award 2011 trophy, the first place winners in each of the three categories – Print, Television, and Photojournalism – will be hosted by the Thomson Foundation for an all-expenses-paid study tour for one week in the UK. The first prize in the Television category will include the reporter and cameraman. (Click to read the experiences of the 2009 Inquirer Award winners when they visited UK last year).
The Inquirer Award project was first launched in Jordan in 2003. Since then it has developed and grown to include Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Palestine and most recently Iraq. The competition was not held in 2006 and 2010.
The Inquirer Award project is managed by the Thomson Foundation and funded by the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
How to enter
To enter the Inquirer Award, download and read carefully the entry form and rules for your chosen category. The forms have been provided in both English and Arabic – use whichever you prefer (but don’t forget, the orginal work must be in Arabic).
Entry categories are listed below. Click to download the form and rules.
The entry form should then be completed and returned, in Word format, together with submitted work. Entries may be submitted to the British Embassy in the relevant participating country or by email to: inquirer.award@gmail.com. Examples of work, depending on award category, can be submitted on CD or uploaded online. See entry form for details.
The deadline for submitting all entries is December 1, 2011.
ENTRY RULES FOR PRINT MEDIA
1. Only print journalists from Iraq, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon and Palestine are eligible to enter this competition.
2. The article submitted must be in Arabic and must have been published between 1 January 2010 and 31 November 2011, and on a news website or publication issued in Iraq, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon or Palestine.
3. The reporter has the freedom to choose the topic of the investigative report; however, it must be relevant and significant to the region and its people.
4. A reporter may submit a maximum of 3 different investigative reports as long as they comply with the rules of the competition.
5. Entrants must NOT be related to any staff member of the British Embassy or the Thomson Foundation.
6. The judging panel’s decision will be final.
7. The work presented must not be the subject of any legal action.
8. To submit an entry the reporter must complete the application form and send it with three copies of the investigative report to the British Embassy in any of the participating countries. Alternatively, the entry can be submitted by email to: inquirer.award@gmail.com
CRITERIA FOR JUDGING
• The extent to which the investigative report reveals new information and its relevance and importance to the readers (6 points)
• High quality research work (6 points)
• Substantial content and style (6 points)
• The effective use of interviews and quotes in the report (6 points)
• Over all presentation and attractiveness of the investigative report (the flow and wealth of information) (6 points)

To spotlight and applaud the achievements of journalists in Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Palestine and Iraq whose investigations really make a difference, the Thomson Foundation has launched The Inquirer Award 2011.
Print and television journalists as well as photojournalists from Iraq, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon and Palestine are eligible to compete for the award. All entries must feature work primarily published or broadcast in Arabic.
The Inquirer Award aims to find journalists who can demonstrate their ability to examine, in depth, a significant issue that is relevant to the region and its people.
Since 2003, the Inquirer Award has become a showcase for some of the region’s finest journalists. The Inquirer Awards past winners page lists journalists who have continued to earn the highest respect from peers and communities.
A panel of independent judges will be looking for entries that show comprehensive and thorough research, incisive interviewing techniques, and creative, well-constructed writing and presentation.
As well as receiving an Inquirer Award 2011 trophy, the first place winners in each of the three categories – Print, Television, and Photojournalism – will be hosted by the Thomson Foundation for an all-expenses-paid study tour for one week in the UK. The first prize in the Television category will include the reporter and cameraman. (Click to read the experiences of the 2009 Inquirer Award winners when they visited UK last year).
The Inquirer Award project was first launched in Jordan in 2003. Since then it has developed and grown to include Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Palestine and most recently Iraq. The competition was not held in 2006 and 2010.
The Inquirer Award project is managed by the Thomson Foundation and funded by the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
How to enter
To enter the Inquirer Award, download and read carefully the entry form and rules for your chosen category. The forms have been provided in both English and Arabic – use whichever you prefer (but don’t forget, the orginal work must be in Arabic).
Entry categories are listed below. Click to download the form and rules.
The entry form should then be completed and returned, in Word format, together with submitted work. Entries may be submitted to the British Embassy in the relevant participating country or by email to: inquirer.award@gmail.com. Examples of work, depending on award category, can be submitted on CD or uploaded online. See entry form for details.
The deadline for submitting all entries is December 1, 2011.
ENTRY RULES FOR PRINT MEDIA
1. Only print journalists from Iraq, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon and Palestine are eligible to enter this competition.
2. The article submitted must be in Arabic and must have been published between 1 January 2010 and 31 November 2011, and on a news website or publication issued in Iraq, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon or Palestine.
3. The reporter has the freedom to choose the topic of the investigative report; however, it must be relevant and significant to the region and its people.
4. A reporter may submit a maximum of 3 different investigative reports as long as they comply with the rules of the competition.
5. Entrants must NOT be related to any staff member of the British Embassy or the Thomson Foundation.
6. The judging panel’s decision will be final.
7. The work presented must not be the subject of any legal action.
8. To submit an entry the reporter must complete the application form and send it with three copies of the investigative report to the British Embassy in any of the participating countries. Alternatively, the entry can be submitted by email to: inquirer.award@gmail.com
CRITERIA FOR JUDGING
• The extent to which the investigative report reveals new information and its relevance and importance to the readers (6 points)
• High quality research work (6 points)
• Substantial content and style (6 points)
• The effective use of interviews and quotes in the report (6 points)
• Over all presentation and attractiveness of the investigative report (the flow and wealth of information) (6 points)

Since the fall of the old regime, IWPR has worked to build skills, enhance institutions and support reliable media production across the country, working with local journalists and media. The goal has been to establish a widespread culture of professionalism, seeking to inculcate an appreciation of international skills and standards – what some Iraqis now refer to as the “IWPR approach” to balanced and responsible reporting. Our work is distinguished by a hands-on, practical approach to training and production. Currently IWPR is implementing five media focused programs in Iraq.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES
1. To oversee the editing and production of news, news analysis, features, opinion pieces and art for editorial packages.
2. To manage editorial staff in Iraq.
3. To shape and help launch new editorial products, including IWPR’s Iraq national website(s).
4. To advise and direct programme staff on new editorial projects.
5. To ensure that editorial grants are being properly implemented.
6. To oversee the implementation of editorial budgets.
7. To provide editorial feedback for contributors, staff and trainees, in the form of verbal and written assessments.

The shortlist for the Jewish Quarterly-Wingate Prize 2011 maps the Jewish story across time and borders, from Baghdad to the Palais Ephrussi, and from the lush Galilee to a desolate post-war German village through the dark shadow of Christian anti-Semitism. This year, the shortlist includes Eli Amir (Iraqi) and David Grossman (Israeli).

When his Uncle Hizkel is arrested, Kabi and his family face an uncertain future, as do all Jews living in 1950s’ Baghdad. Each member of Kabi’s circle has a different dream: his mother wants to return to the Moslem quarter where she felt safer; his father wants to emigrate to Israel and grow rice there while Salim, his headmaster, wants Arabs and Jews to be equal, and Abu Edouard just wants to continue to care for his beloved doves.
Eli Amir was born in Baghdad in 1937 and left for Israel in 1950. A prize-winning author, he is also a social activist, once saying in Cairo “How can there be peace without us knowing each other?”
TO THE END OF THE LAND by David Grossman
Ora is about to celebrate her son Ofer’s release from Israeli army service when he voluntarily rejoins his unit for a major offensive. In a fit of magical thinking, she takes off to hike in the Galilee, leaving no forwarding information for the ‘notifiers’ who might darken her door. This is comforting logic: if she cannot be told of Ofer’s death, he must remain alive. Grossman’s rich imagining of a family in love and crisis is one of the great anti-war novels of our time.
David Grossman was born in Jerusalem on January 25, 1954 and studied philosophy and theatre at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He is one of the leading Israeli writers of his generation, and the author of numerous pieces of fiction, nonfiction and children’s literature. His work has been translated into 25 languages around the world.

The competition is open to young Iraqi Journalists, between the ages 20 and 35. Candidates are welcome to apply regardless of their sex, ethnicity or religious background. They must currently be based in Iraq and working for written press, TV, radio or online media.
To apply, the candidate should fill in the online form, upload a published article or a radio/TV broadcast related to the promotion of inter-cultural dialogue, and include a short summary in English as well as a letter of motivation.
An excellent knowledge of English is required. Knowledge of French or other languages will be considered as an asset.
The deadline for applications is 30th April 2011, midnight (CET +1).
An international jury will evaluate the applications submitted by the journalists and nominate the winner, who will be awarded a 3 month sponsored fellowship in Brussels (not to be prolonged).
The fellowship is granted to the winner only and will not be extended to family members.
For the three-month fellowship the European Journalism Centre (EJC) will contribute by offering:
* Administrative and technical support for the competition
* The selection of the jury members
* A return flight ticket from Baghdad/Brussels/Baghdad
* The reimbursement of the cost of the visa

Iraqi Instructor / Translator Needed in DC (pays $35-$45 per hour)

I am looking for an Iraqi instructor and native speaker with translation experience to provide as many of the following services as possible:
1. Listen to 2-3 short (~5 min each) recordings of Iraqi and evaluate the authenticity and naturalness of the spoken Iraqi.
2. Listen in on longer studio recording sessions and direct / coach other Iraqi speakers, per specifications to be provided.
3. Speak Iraqi clearly and authentically, working from a script, to record monologues and dialogues in recording sessions at a studio in Washington, DC.
4. Review Iraqi scripts for authenticity of language, making corrections to them as needed. Correct English translations of these scripts as needed.
5. Produce Iraqi scripts based on models and specifications provided.
Most tasks can be done on evenings and weekends. Studio tasks (2 and 3) require time at the studio, scheduled during regular studio hours.
Timeframe
Tasks will require approximately 20-25 hours per week for about 4 weeks beginning no later than Monday, November 15.
The purpose of this project is to create a test of Iraqi listening comprehension for beginning learners.
Location: Washington, DC

Vacancy: Chief of Party, Internews Network - Iraq
Internews® Network is an international media development organization based in Arcata, California and Washington, D.C., whose mission is to empower local media worldwide to give people the news and information they need, the ability to connect, and the means to make their voices heard.
GENERAL FUNCTION:
Internews Network is seeking a Chief of Party candidate for a media support initiative to enhance the Iraqi government's accountability in the critically important oil industry by improving oil reporting as a specialization in Iraqi media and building awareness of this specialization across Iraq more broadly.
The Chief of Party will additionally coordinate technical, legal and professional capacity building assistance to partners and beneficiaries; ensure proper oversight of Internews personnel, financial management and administration; and coordinate with partners and other media stakeholders in the region to ensure that Internews leverages other resources, avoids duplication and compliments other media development initiatives. The Chief of Party will also be responsible for establishing strong partnership and dialogue with the appropriate donor representatives. Position will last up to 21 months.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Provide leadership, management, representational and operational oversight for Internews Network’s program in Iraq.
* Oversee mentoring of energy specialist reporters and foundation courses for journalists, officials and civil society workers.
* Oversee the creation of reference materials and specialist communities necessary to better drive energy reporting in Iraq.
* Oversee journalist field trips, both in and out of country.
* Oversee the production of documentaries and training videos.
* Provide strategic, operational and representational assistance to ensure that activities are meeting their goals and targets, recommending program adjustments when necessary to keep the project on track.
* Cultivate and strengthen relationships with local Iraqi partner organizations and ensure that implementation is responsive to the needs of partners and beneficiaries.

Kamel Shiaa Prize for Young Iraqi Journalists
We are pleased to announce that a prize will be dedicated to the memory of the late Iraqi/Belgian intellectual and writer Kamel Shiaa Abdullah, who was assassinated in Baghdad on 23 August, 2008. He had returned to his native country after the end of the 2003 US-led invasion, hoping to help repair the post-conflict aftermath of political, ideological and social chaos.
The role and ideas of the late Kamel Shiaa Abdullah have given enormous encouragement to those committed to a civic society, freedom of press as a fabric of democracy, law and order and diversity. His political rigor, understated charisma, enormous personal charm and intellectual eminence all contributed to his significant importance among fellow intellectuals, writers, artists, journalists and colleagues at the Ministry of Culture, where he worked as an adviser and as a Chair of National co-ordination Committee for Safeguarding of the Cultural Heritage of Iraq at UNESCO.
The prize will be given to a young Iraqi journalist, coming at a time when a flurry of recent murders of independent journalists in Iraq could be described as part of a campaign to suppress objective voices.

Iraq to Officially Censor Books
The Iraqi Ministry of Culture will now censor all books and publications from abroad, and will only allow their distribution after obtaining the required approval. This also includes books printed within Iraq. The unexpected step raised the ire of Iraqi publishers and booksellers, calling it "a great step backwards on the path of freedom of thought and expression."

The Open Eye Award invites applications this year from Iraqi business journalists, addressing the main economic issues faced by Iraq today. The three best pieces will be chosen to receive the prize. Applications are open until the 12th of September 2010.
Eligibility
The award panel seeks pieces focused on Iraq’s most important economic issues. Articles should engage with their subjects critically and propose solutions to problems. All journalistic forms are accepted – reportage, essays, features.
Preconditions for participation
Unpublished Articles
- Any Iraqi over the age of 18 can apply.
- Articles can be submitted in Arabic or Kurdish.
- Articles should not be longer five A4 pages single-spaced, 12pt Times New Roman.
- Both published and unpublished articles are accepted but published articles cannot be older than 1 January 2010.
- Journalists must fill in the application form. www.mict-international.org/openeye .
- Journalists must send the application as an attachment to an email by 12 September 2010 to mirvat@mict-international.org .
- The WPI editorial team will announce on 15 September a shortlist of selected articles to be considered by the jury.

Three winners will be chosen to receive Open Eye Awards. Authors will be invited to an award ceremony in Berlin. Part of the awards includes a ten-day work placement in the editorial department of Wirtschaftsplattform Irak and in two other editorial department in the field of business journalism. During their stay in the German capital, they will also take part in a cultural program, presenting Berlin’s most important historical and political sights. All participants will be notified of their result via email on 15 November 2010.
Jury
The jury of ten consists of five well-known reporters and editors from Iraq and Germany, as well as members of the German Foreign Office. According to a transparent evaluation scheme, they will choose the eventual winners.
Topics
Articles are welcome that deal with any business-related topic or issue significant to Iraq’s economic future. Some possible topics include privatisation or other urgently needed economic reforms, government support for small- and medium-sized enterprises, the federal budget, cooperate responsibility, the promotion of exemplary corporate governance or sponsorship of large capital spending projects.

The Wirtschaftsplattform Irak, an online-publication run by the non-profit organisation MICT - Media in Cooperation and Transition, is awarding the OPEN EYE AWARD to Iraqi journalists. The project and the award are supported by the German Foreign Office.Since February 2009, the Wirtschaftsplattform Irak has been providing information on developments in Iraqi economics, politics and society to foster stronger economic ties between Germany and Iraq and thus to play a part in conflict prevention and the strengthening of democratic structures. With this prize, the Wirtschaftsplattform Irak aspires to reward journalists who show their commitment to well-researched investigative journalism and thereby contribute to transparency and sustainability within the economic sphere in Iraq.

The Open Eye Award invites applications this year from Iraqi business journalists, addressing the main economic issues faced by Iraq today. The three best pieces will be chosen to receive the prize. Applications are open until the 12th of September 2010.
Eligibility
The award panel seeks pieces focused on Iraq’s most important economic issues. Articles should engage with their subjects critically and propose solutions to problems. All journalistic forms are accepted – reportage, essays, features.
Preconditions for participation
Unpublished Articles
- Any Iraqi over the age of 18 can apply.
- Articles can be submitted in Arabic or Kurdish.
- Articles should not be longer five A4 pages single-spaced, 12pt Times New Roman.
- Both published and unpublished articles are accepted but published articles cannot be older than 1 January 2010.
- Journalists must fill in the application form. www.mict-international.org/openeye .
- Journalists must send the application as an attachment to an email by 12 September 2010 to mirvat@mict-international.org .
- The WPI editorial team will announce on 15 September a shortlist of selected articles to be considered by the jury.
- Journalists will be given a one-time payment of USD 100 to cover the cost of producing their article.
- Finished articles by shortlisted applicants must be sent to mirvat@mict-international.org by 5 October 2010.
