Rusted Radishes, an annual literary and art journal based at the American University of Beirut, is extending its submission period for its 2013 issue to April 5th (from the previous deadline of March 15th).

Rusted Radishes seeks writing and art that is innovative, truthful, risk-taking, and engaged. Their contributors are largely from the American University of Beirut, but they welcome submissions from all around the world. Their only requirement is that you somehow are “related” to Lebanon.

Rusted Radishes seeks writing and art that is innovative, truthful, risk-taking, and engaged. Our contributors are largely from the American University of Beirut, but in order to build international ties and a deep contextual basis through our journal, we welcome submissions from all around the world from people who have a relationship with Lebanon, whether they are Lebanese, live along its borders, have traveled or worked there, or have some other tangible connection with the culture. Nonetheless, subject matter is certainly not confined to Lebanon, but instead should illuminate some aspects of the human condition in a way we haven’t seen before.

Rusted Radishes is published annually. Our reading period for 2013 is from January 1 to March 15. Please pay particular attention to the following general guidelines and adhere to the specific genre guidelines. Any work submitted not in line with these guidelines will be automatically disregarded.

Attachment: Each story, play, creative non-fiction piece, or set of poems should be attached in a separate document in .txt, .doc, .docx, or .rtf form.

Formatting is easy: Simply use a 12 pt Times New Roman font and double-space each prose piece (feel free to retain the original aesthetic in your poetry), and make sure the title of the piece and page number appear in the header of each page.

Multiple submissions are welcome: But check the guidelines specific to your genre for the maximum allowance. Please note that any combination of genres consistent with individual guidelines is welcome.

Name each submission ‘title_genre’: Please include your full name and e-mail address (from which you sent your submission) on the top of the first page of the actual submission file.

Body of the email: Please provide a bio (please include if you are a student or alum of AUB), your submission titles (with word-counts if prose), and your contact details.

GENRE-SPECIFIC GUIDELINES:

• Fiction - We are receptive to high-quality literary fiction, and are happy to read stories with both traditional and experimental forms and subjects. We will consider flash fiction (350-1000 words) and short stories (1000-6500 words). Please do not send a story exceeding 6500 words. Please send no more than 3 stories.
• Poetry - We are looking for poetry that reflects, creates, destroys and rebuilds. The writing has to be layered in its images, content, presence and creativity. Build a world involving, but not limited to, your humanity and non-humanity, filled with your otherness and compiled with your own conflicting perspectives in different voices. Avoid standard rhyme schemes, experiment with your poetry but make it accessible; instead of silliness aim for wit and charm. Each poem must be no longer than 35 lines. Send 3-5 poems in a single document.
• Non-fiction  - We are looking for engaging, honest and original pieces, with a strong voice and fresh insights that have the potential of going beyond the personal and connecting with the human experience. All styles and approaches are accepted, be they personal essay, memoir, narrative non-fiction, social commentary, or other. Submissions should be no longer than 5000 words. Up to two submissions per issue are allowed.
• Drama - The art of drama is one that most allows for a tangible establishment of the play / audience (or reader) relationship because of its performative characteristics. We are looking for short 10-minute plays that are built on a specific conflict and insightful enough to shed light on a particular aspect of our own realities by keeping fluid the relationship with the readers. At the same time, the stage setting and directions should be thought of as reasonably feasible on a theater stage and should avoid effects usually witnessed in cinematographic works. All genres are welcome (including but not limited to comedy, tragedy, theater of the absurd, and historical) but should not fall into grotesque parodies or in cliché plots and lines. A maximum of 2 plays is allowed per playwright. Each play should not exceed 10 pages.
• Art & Craftwork - We are looking for striking, skillfully rendered artistic work that has impact and originality. We welcome all styles and subjects and are open to craft of any variety, be it digital art, photography, painting, ceramics or other. Non-digital work should be scanned or photographed into digital files and, if possible, color corrected. All work should be exactly 300 DPI and equal to or smaller than A5 format. Each submission should be attached as .pdf, .eps, .jpeg, or .tiff and should not exceed 5 MB in size. You may send up to 5 pieces of work. Please follow the guidelines above where appropriate.

Barra magazine is a bi-quarterly publication by Helem that is oriented to LGBTQ issues in the Arab world. Through this magazine, we wish to encourage and enrich the discourse on issues related to the reality and lives of LGBTQ individuals. We also aim to reach out to the community and reflect its voices and concerns. By breaking through the misconceptions and enigmas that have been created around homosexuality and gender bending personalities, this magazine will be able to shatter the frail illusions of non-existence and the shades of silence on these issues.

Any contribution is welcomed and it can be in the form of:

• Original poetry, short stories, personal stories and experiences, opinion pieces. etc.
• Original photographs and artwork or a review of the such works

An intensive script writing workshop will be held for 3 days at AltCity in Hamra by Award winning scriptwriter/director Darine Hotait*. Subscribers don't need to have a film idea before starting the workshop. The main focus will be put on short film scripts and how to create one from scratch. Films that will be produced before the end of December 2012 will be screened in Outbox International Short Film Festival- June 2013.

PROGRAM:

Part 1 Creative:

• Finding inspiration and your own voice as a screenwriter
• Understanding of development process
• Storytelling technique

• Dialogs and Character development
• Plagiarism and writer's ethics and discipline

Part 2 The Craft

• Different styles of writing
• The business of screenwriting

• Formatting your screenplay to the international standards

Part 4 Director/Writer:

The third day of the workshop will end with a one hour course about how and where to distribute your film.

ABOUT DARINE HOTAIT

Darine Hotait is a Lebanese American film writer, director and producer. She received her Masters Degree in film writing and directing from the prestigious Art Center College of Design in California. In 2008, She founded Cinephilia Productions in Los Angeles and later in New York, where she produced a number of award winning films. She has written, directed and produced a number of short films that has received acclaim and awards at various international film festivals such as 'Beirut...Hide and Seek', ' The Far Side of Laughter', 'Command or Truth', 'Hymn for Isis'...and more.

Darine has written a number of feature screenplays. Her debut screenplay 'Symphony of a Flood' has made the top 5 finalists at the San Francisco Hearst Screenwriting Grant. The film is now in pre-production. Her second screenplay titled 'Decoding Bach' is sponsored by the New York Foundation For The Arts and now in development phase.

At the moment, Darine is producing an Iranian feature film written and directed by Abazar Noorizad. She resides in New York.

The Said-Asfari Fellowship, established in 2012, is a six month (two term) Fellowship supported by the Said Foundation and the Asfari Foundation. It is open to experienced journalists wishing to undertake research projects on a variety of subjects, normally related to the business, economic and/or social development of a country or of its media.

There is a minimum requirement of 5 years’ professional journalistic experience, but exceptional applicants who do not meet this requirement may be considered. Candidates should ideally be based in the Levant and intend to work there upon the completion of the Fellowship. Journalists from Lebanon, Palestine and Syria (resident in the Levant region or Egypt) are eligible.

By providing much-needed in-depth reporting on the uprisings and other news in the region, al-Akhbar English will reflect the diverse and dynamic realities that make up the communities undergoing these transformations. The English edition also aims to make debates and analyses circulating in the Arabic media sphere accessible to English speakers worldwide. Currently the most visited Lebanese newspaper site, al-Akhbar depends on young and creative writers that challenge conventional forms of reporting and aspires to speak truth to power. Al-Akhbar English intends to preserve this tradition by translating selected articles from the Arabic edition to an international readership. The site will also feature original content of opinion, analysis, and field stories as well as photo blogs chronicling the latest developments across the Middle East.

We are looking for a journalist to join our news desk in Beirut on a part-time basis, twice a week, including potential weekend and evening work.

• The applicant will ideally have an academic background in journalism, excellent English writing skills, confidence to interview, and ability to work quickly in a high pressure environment.

The Anna Lindh Foundation officially launched the 6th edition of the Mediterranean Journalist Award. The contest which will run until 20 July 2012, is open for journalists nationals of the 42 countries of the Union for the Mediterranean.

Organised by Anna Lindh Foundation in collaboration with the COPEAM, The European Commission and Allianz Cultural Foundation, the Mediterranean Journalist Award is a prestigious regional distinction rewarding journalists from Printed Press, Radio and Television in addition to New Media journalists who contribute to the valorisation of diversity values and intercultural dialogue and provide balanced and informed coverage of cultural issues in the region ranging from minorities, migration, integration and identity to religion and cultural traditions.

Given the historical social transformations unfolding in the Euro Mediterranean region, the Anna Lindh Foundation will recognize this year exceptional journalistic works on the theme “Reporting on civil society and democracy-building”.

Furthermore, an’ Outstanding Contribution’ award will be bestowed by the International Jury to a leading journalist or media institution for their professional commitment to intercultural dialogue.

An international renowned jury will preselect 15 finalists to be invited to attend the Awarding Ceremony due to take place in Berlin on the 18th of October 2012. During the event, 5 journalists, one by each category, will be announced winners of the 2012 Edition in presence of leading personalities of the Mediterranean cultural and journalistic scenes.

The winners will receive a 2500 Euros cash prize, and will be involved together with the finalists in the Anna Lindh Foundation’s future activities and events during a whole year.

Since it’s launching in 2006, some 30 journalists from the Euro Mediterranean region were awarded the Anna Lindh journalism award for having contributed to bridging the gap between mutual perceptions and helped in bringing people of different culture together .
