Fiction + Poetry + Nonfiction + Art
1. The best way to submit to our journal will be to use our online system (which saves trees + helps you keep track of your submissions too). If you have any questions, send an email to: submissions[at]flyingfistsjournal.com.
2. What we’re looking for: we want beautifully crafted Asian writing that kicks our ass. Aesthetically, we’re open to all styles, but the writing has to rock (in a 21st century kind of way). We especially appreciate writing that is ambitious, culturally relevant, socially-engaged and/or aware of the greater world surrounding us. Just make sure the writing is pretty much stellar. By the way, we can smell a draft a mile away—it smells like Natto beans, in case you’re wondering. The best way to get a sense of our aesthetic is to buy a copy of Flying Fists. It’s a fantastic ice-breaker at parties: (–Yo, is that a copy of Flying Fists you’ve got there? –Why, yes it is). Also, it’s always great—karmically speaking—to support your small literary journals. If you want to know what we’re publishing, then be on the right part of history + buy a sample copy of Flying Fists here.
3. Unpublished work only please: if we find out your piece has already made out with another journal (in print or online), it’s over! Simultaneous submissions are allowed because this world is slow + imperfect. Additionally, because we’re human, generally monogamous + hypercritical, we can only accept one piece of fiction/nonfiction at a time. Our poetry tastes, on the other hand, are polyamorous, so we can consider four poems at a time (all in one file, of course). Also, novel excerpts are cool, assuming that they’re self-contained + basically amazing. Great translations are a dream. We read submissions as soon as we can, but we’re a small collective so response times vary anywhere from a few weeks to 6 months. If you haven’t heard from us after 6 months, you can drop us a line at: managingeditor[at]flyingfistsjournal.com. Just don’t be snarky. We don’t respond well to snark.
Disorientation
Future issues of Flying Fists will have a small section focused on a particular Asian country that changes with each issue. To submit poetry, artwork + prose for this section, please submit work in your respective genre using our online system, + be sure to specify the submission is for the Disorientation section. Otherwise, your art will get buried in the avalanche.
FF10 (Interviews)
We publish interviews with prominent Asian(-American) authors, assuming the interviews follow our Flying Fists Interview Template located in our interview section. If you have an interview you’d like us to publish, please submit it using our online system under the Features category with “FF10″ included in the header.
FF3 (Artwork + Photography)
Sample artwork + photography for cover art or visual narratives within Flying Fists (in both the print journal + the online supplement), must be submitted via our online system under the Arts category. The FF3 is all about perspective, so we’re looking for art that captures the same place (city or neighborhood or block or building or galactic paradise) from three points of view. Please send no more than 3 low-res files. Please send any questions to: art[at]flyingfistsjournal.com. All accepted artwork will be kept on file.
FFG (Graphic Novels) We are looking for excerpts from new + established graphic novels, especially serials dealing with contemporary issues (e.g. immigrant narratives, culture clash, intergenerational conflicts, identity stuff, politics, war), but we’ll consider anything good. must be submitted via our online system under the Arts category. Please send any questions to: art[at]flyingfistsjournal.com.
FFR (Micro Reviews)
We are always looking for beautifully written microreviews on recently published Asian novels. You can submit your 1-sentence book reviews using our online system under the Features category with “FFR” included in the header. If you have any questions, please refer them to info[at]flyingfistsjournal.com.
