Diversity in Filipino/Asian American Communities: Exploring Racial, Geographic and Generational Differences in Literature (Univ. of San Francisco)

The Asian American Studies Program, Yuchengco Philippine Studies Program, Ethnic Studies and the Asian Pacific Student Coalition of the University of San Francisco (USF) proudly join the Literacy Initiatives International Foundation (LIIF) in presenting “Diversity In Filipino/Asian American Communities: Exploring Racial, Geographic and Generational Differences in Literature” as part of its Asian American Heritage Month celebration. This event will feature three highly-acclaimed Filipino American authors: Pati Poblete, Janet Stickmon and Peter Jamero who will have a conversation with educators Fr. Dennis Recio and Michael Gonzalez. It will be held at USF Fromm Hall’s Maier Room, 660 Parker Avenue, San Francisco on April 26 at 5:30 pm.
Kevin Chun, Director of the Asian American Studies, said the faculty of the sponsoring Programs thought it would be compelling to hear the selected authors speak on the diverse voices in Asian America that contribute to the richness and complexities of Asian American lives.
Peter Jamero’s Growing Up Brown: Memoirs of a Filipino American, depicts the hardship and success, the struggle against racism and poverty of the “bridge generation” – American-born children of Filipinos largely recruited as farm workers during the 1920’s and 1930’s. His soon to be released book Vanishing Filipino Americans: The Bridge Generation is a sequel, delving into their maturation and contributions to society. Peter, who now lives in Atwater, CA, was formerly an assistant secretary at the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services, and an assistant professor of Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Washington.
Pati Navalta Poblete’s memoir, “The Oracles: My Filipino Grandparents in America,” brings to light what happens when two sets of Filipino grandparents descend upon a Filipino American household to help raise their grandchildren, creating chaos and confusion especially when supernatural intervention is sought. Prior to joining Global Footprint Network as World Outreach and Media Director, Poblete was a journalist for 15 years, working as a columnist and editorial writer for the San Francisco Chronicle ( a Pulitzer Prize nominee in editorial writing in 2006-2007), deputy editorial page editor for the Honolulu Advertiser and staff editor at numerous Bay Area daily newspapers.
Janet Stickmon is the author of Crushing Soft Rubies, a memoir that writes of struggle, independence, racial identity and self-acceptance. “From her childhood home being burned to the ground, to the joys and conflicts with her Filipino family, to seeking a connection to her African-American heritage, and then to the beautiful moment of her marriage, Janet navigates the rough waters of love, spirit, identity, and survival, maintaining a life filled with faith and wonder.” Stickmon is a teacher, a wife and mother, a student taking her Master’s Degree at San Francisco State University in Ethnic Studies, and a Spoken Word artist.
This colloquium is part of the series of Conversations with Filipino/Filipino American Authors on Growing Up and Living in America that will be held in various libraries, universities and other public venues in the Bay Area. Conversations is geared to promote the first-ever Filipino American International Book Festival, which will gather authors of Filipino heritage based in the U.S. and abroad, Philippine and U.S. publishers, librarians, book dealers, academics and artists.
FilBookFest will be held at the San Francisco Public Library on October 1-2, 2011 and is sponsored by the Literacy Initiatives International Foundation (LIIF) in cooperation with the Philippine Consulate of San Francisco and the Filipino American Center of the San Francisco Public Library.

An Evening of Poetry with Arab American Poets Deema K. Shehabi and Zaid Shlah

The Silicon Valley Middle East Studies Consortium presents an evening with Deema K. Shehabi and Zaid Shlah at the Silicon Valley Arab American Cultural Center (3952 Twilight Drive, San Jose, California) on Thursday, April 28. 2011 at 7:30 PM.
Free and open to the public.
Deema K. Shehabi is a writer, editor, and poet. She grew up in the Arab world and attended college in the US, where she received an MA in journalism. Her poems have appeared or are forthcoming in several anthologies and literary journals including the Atlanta Review, The Poetry of Arab Women, Crab Orchard, DMQ Review, Flyway, The Mississippi Review, and Valparaiso Poetry Review. She is the Vice-President for RAWI (the Radius of Arab-American Writers Inc). She currently resides in Northern California with her husband and two sons.
A native Calgarian, Zaid Shlah now resides in Walnut Creek, CA with his wife Randa. He obtained his MA in English from San Francisco State University. His poetry has appeared in literary magazines and journals in both Canada and the United States. Most recently he was awarded the American Academy of Poets Award. Zaid teaches in Walnut Creek, and lectures at New College of California.

Northern Writers' Launch and Readings at Garden Villa, Malaysia

Ipoh and Perak have hosted a large number of professional writers over the years, including internationally renown authors like Anthony Burgess,Muhammad Haji Salleh,Tash Aw and Preeta Samarasan as well as local writers - Bernice Chauly, Patrick Teoh, Mamat Khalid and Paul Gnanaselvam.
Northern Writers brings the ‘writers reading’ concept to Perak. Like writers’ and readers’ support groups elsewhere, the concept is simple. Writers of all writing disciplines - poets, book authors, short story writers, playwrights, writers for films, in fact writers of all descriptions will read to a, hopefully, appreciative audience. That is you!
Writers will discuss their work, and give some insights into the process of writing and the practicalities of making a career out of writing. The intent is not to be exclusive, but inclusive. Northern Writers is free. There is no joining. No need for membership.
Just turn up with your interest in writing. Northern writers would like to welcome anyone that is interested in writing whether professional or amateur. We propose to create a venue in which a free-flow of creative ideas might occur amongst people sharing a common interest - writing.
One lunchtime a month, on the first Saturday of every month, beginning June 4th 2011, Northern Writers will open its doors to those with an interest in writing and reading. Although the main focus will be upon the act or process of writing, we also acknowledge that you cannot become a good writer unless you are also a good reader. Therefore, there will also be an encouragement for people to read and to discuss books. Over time it is hoped that we may begin creative writing workshops too, but that will depend upon interest.
Northern Writers encourages literacy in English, promotes the idea of a Malaysian Literature in English and intends to aid the writing and reading in the English Language in Malaysia. Over time it may become possible for other languages to be included in the overall concept of writers reading, but the emphasis at start-up is primarily for English to be used at Northern Writers.
We hope that you may lend us your support. The intention is for Northern Writers to remain 100% free to those who take part - both the readers and the audience. Refreshments will also be provided free of charge. Northern Writers is intended to work across boundaries of Race, Religion, Politics, Disability and Sex and would request those participating to do the same.
Join us. Help spread Literacy in English across the North of Malaysia. If you are a writer - participate and gain a fresh audience for your work. If you are a reader, come, watch and listen to writers’ works and interact with them for one Saturday a month beginning 4th June 2011. If you are neither a writer nor a reader, support the concept in the spirit of a One Malaysia. All adults and those in higher education are most welcome.

Description: The Hong Kong Public Libraries has always taken the promotion of local literary arts as an important goal. With the provision of a rich and balanced library collection and organization of territory-wide literary awards and events, the Public Libraries aims to cultivate public interest in reading and creative writing. Since the inception of Hong Kong Literature Festival in 1997, the Public Libraries has devoted to become a hub of literary activities that bring together literary talents to achieve the goal. For the 8th edition of the Festival, running from 24 June to 11 July 2010, there will be a variety of activities to celebrate the city’s vibrant literary scene with the public. For the 8th edition of the Festival, running from 24 June to 11 July 2010, there will be a variety of activities to celebrate the city’s vibrant literary scene with the public. Adopting the theme “Footprints Along the Way” this year, the Public Libraries have invited eminent writers, scholars, cultural critics and literary groups to trace the considerable footprints left in the development of Hong Kong literature. They will guide the participants to appreciate traditional literary genres, to review the evolution of literary themes, and to enjoy reading of award winning works as well as beautiful poems. There is a new series of programme entitled “Passing on the Torch: Talk Series of Hong Kong Writers” that highlights our theme about passing on the passionate spirit for literary creativity between generations. And the thematic exhibition will feature the literary phenomena which signify the multi-faceted aspects of local literature to the public.
