Together Day is a national commemorative day designated as May 20th to create an environment where Korean citizens and foreigners residing in Korea live in harmony. To commemorate the 6th Together Day 2013, the Ministry of Justice co-hosts the essay contest on foreigner's life in Korea with the Ministry of Security and Public Ministration and Korea Saemaul Undong Center.

ELIGIBILITY AND CONTEST GENRE:

• Participant : Expats living in Korea and any Korean citizen
• Genre : Essay on foreigner's life in Korea
• Marriage migrants or their family members (spouses, parents, children, etc)
• International students, foreign workers, ethnic Koreans with foreign nationality
• Employees or volunteers of foreigner supporting private organizations, mentors or supporters of marriage migrants

CONTEST THEME AND SCHEDULE:

Theme: “Color Your Dream”

• Topic 1. Anecdotes on life in Korea as a marriage migrant (e.g. Know-hows to adjust to life in Korea as a foreign housewife)
• Topic 2. A beautiful love story with a Korean spouse (e.g. Stories about how you met your Korean spouse)
• Topic 3. Anecdotes on your school life as an international student (e.g. Benefits of studying in Korea as an international student)
• Topic 4. Anecdotes on experiences as a foreign worker (e.g. Tips on working in Korea as a foreign worker)

The LTI Translation Academy offers various courses for prospective translators of Korean literature from around the world. The Intensive Course is a year-long curriculum composed of translation workshops, Korean language classes, and lectures on Korean culture and literature. The intensive Course is scheduled to begin in September 2013 for the academic year 2013-2014. We are looking for qualified applicants that will rise to the challenge of translating Korean literature, thereby contributing to the expansion of its global readership.

LTI TRANSLATION ACADEMY FELLOWSHIP

The LTI Translation Academy Fellowship is open to overseas applicants whose native language is one of the following five languages (English, French, German, Russian, or Spanish). This fellowship is designed to allow overseas students to fully devote themselves to their studies of literary translation during their stay in Korea.

The fellowship includes: round-trip airfare, monthly stipend of 1.6 million KRW, visa and health insurance, and tuition waiver.

Writers wanted to pen the Korea Essential 2013 series, a cooperative project between the Korea Foundation and Seoul Selection. Twelve volumes have been published so far, which you can find on Seoul Selection’s online bookshop. This year, four volumes are planned to be released: Hanbok and Korean Fashion, Taekwondo, Korean Traditional Medicine, and Korean Dance. Each volume is about 20,000 words; manuscripts should focus on providing readers fun, easy explanations rather than excessively technical content.

We are looking for an energetic and passionate full-time writer/editor to join our team in Seoul. As a writer/editor, you will help with editorial duties and promotions, as well as perform miscellaneous duties. Assignments will vary, but they will allow you to gain experience in different fields in the online media business.

Arojah Concepts in collaboration with the Korean Cultural, is set to join the rest of the world in commemorating this year’s World Poetry Day with the annual Korea-Nigeria Poetry Feast, organised in commemoration of the World Poetry Day 2013.

This year’s edition, the 3rd in the series will focus on the celebration of the women folk, in honour of Korea’s first eve female President-elect, Senator Park Geun-hye (to be sworn in on February 25th) and other women in leadership across the world, especially in Asia and Africa.

We thereby invite interested poets to submit enteries for the Volume II Cross-cultural anthology, in accordance with the following guidelines:

• Each poet may submit between 1 – 5 poems each
• All poems must focus on appraisal of the ‘Women Folk’ – Mothers, Wives, Daughters, Sisters, Daughters, Women in Politics, Women in Leadership and most importantly an appraisal of some of the legendary women of yesterday and today who have lived a life worthy of commendation, emulation and immortality.
• All poems must be in English or local languages accompanied with Englsigh translation.
• Enteries can be in any poetic form of the poet’s choice.
• Enteries should be submitted as a single word document file attached to a mail
• All entries must be accompanied with a short bio (100 words Max)
• The subject box should be marked: Korea-Nigeria Poetry Anthology
• Contributors will receive one copy each one (1) complimentary copy each of the anthology but can purchase additional copies @ 25% discount.

The 2013 Global Human Rights Essay Contest on “Human Right City” (Hereafter HRC Essay Contest) is a joint initiative by the Human Rights Center of Seoul National University, the May 18 Institute of Chonnam National University, and the Korea Human Rights Foundation (KHRF) with support of the Metropolitan City of Gwangju in connection with the 3rd World Human Rights Cities Forum (WHRCF) which will be held from 16 to 18 May 2013 in Gwangju, South Korea.

It is co-sponsored by the following partner organizations; UNESCO Asia-Pacific Center of Education for International Understanding (APCEIU), United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) - Committee on Social Inclusion, Participatory

Democracy and Human Rights, CIVICUS-World Alliance for Citizen Participation and CARR CENTER for Human Rights Policy of HARVARD Kennedy School

Its primary goal is to promote university students’ and youth participation in the building of a human rights city through the articulation of their visions and experiences about human rights city. The ideas and proposals contained in the essays are expected to be used for the promotion of a human rights city as a means to localize human rights in the context of glocalization (globalization + localization) and glurbanization (globalization + urbanization), in particular, for the implementation of the 2011 Gwangju Declaration on Human Rights City and the 2012 Gwangju Statement of the WHRCF, Global Charter-Agenda for Human Rights in the City of the UCLG, and research on local government and human rights of the UN Human Rights Council Advisory Committee (HRCAC).

Three semi-finalists will make presentations and compete for first place on 15 May 2015 prior to the WHRCF in Gwangju, South Korea.

ELIGIBILITY:

• In order to provide a platform for the youth and young adults to actively participate in human rights,the HRC Essay Contest is open to youth from the age of 30 and younger.
• Restriction applies to youth that have Ph. D.
• Award winners from previous HRC Essay Contest are also restricted from applying.

PROCEDURES AND DEADLINE:

• All participants must complete register no later than on or before 1 Feb., 2013 by midnight Korea Standard Time (KST). Registration will be accepted starting on January 10, 2013 at www.humanrights.or.kr
• The deadline for submission of essay is on March 1, 2013 by midnight Korea Standard Time (KST).
• The announcement of the 3 candidates for the final round will be made online at the HRC Essay Contest Website on April 1, 2013.
• The 3 finalists from the respective Korean and English tracks are invited to make presentations of their essays before judges on May 15, 2013during the WHRCF2013.
• The award ceremony will take place on May 17, 2013 at the closing session of the WHRCF.

LANGUAGE AND LENGTH:

• Participants have an option of writing the essay in Korean or English.
• Length of essay should be between 5,000 and 10,000 words
• Sources and quotations must be cited properly.
• Plagiarism will not be tolerated.
• Proper bibliography or footnotes must be included.

WRITING TOPICS AND GUIDELINES:

• The essay is expected to deal with issues related to human rights city.
• The essay is expected to answer the following hypothetical question “If I were to change my city to a human rights city– how would I promote and implement human rights city in the local and/or national context”.
• The city that you plan to write about can be a city that you are a resident of or a city that you are particularly interested in. The city must not be hypothetical.
• The essay may be written by an individual or a group (maximum of 3 writers). In the case that a group is chosen as a finalist, only one writer will be funded to present at the WHRCF 2013.

Participants should read the following basic documents before the writing the essay in accordance with the guideline questions.

• Gwangju Declaration on a Human Rights City of the WHRCF 2011 (17 May 2011)
• Gwangju Statement of WHRCF 2012 (17 May 2012)
• Global Charter-Agenda for Human Rights in the City (11 Dec. 2011)
• Local Governments and Human Rights: Doing Good Service by the International Council on Human Rights Policy (ICHRP)

The main contents must have one or a few of the following questions as the base argument:

GUIDELINE QUESTIONS FOR ESSAY WRITING :

• How can you address the challenges and implement the recommendations contained in the 2011 Gwangju Declaration on Human Rights City and 2012 Gwangju Statement of the WHRCF in your own city and local community?
• How can you implement the Global Charter-Agenda for Human Rights in the City in your own city and local community?
• How can your own city or local government contribute to the implementation of the recommendations of UN Human Rights Treaty bodies, special procedures mandate holders and the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) to your own national government? (please refer to www.ohchr.org for detailed information on the UN recommendations to your own country)
• What are some key challenges in building the human rights city and how can you overcome them in your own city, local community and/or country?

Please keep in mind that you are not restricted to write on only one topic nor limited on the topics stated above. Multiple ideas/topics that can properly express your ideal human rights city can be used.

RECOGNITION AND AWARDS:

• Upon initial review, 3 finalists each from the Korean track and English track will be chosen and announced on April 1, 2013.
• The 3 candidates will then be invited to make presentations of their essays before the panel of judges in the final round on 15 May 2013 prior the WHRCF 2013.
• In the case of a team paper of overseas participants is chosen as a finalist, the main writer or 1 representative will be funded to make the presentation in Gwangju, Korea.
• In the case the selected finalist is not able to attend the WHRCF and compete in the final round of the essay contest, the opportunity will then go to the next contestant that scored the highest during the initial judging.

THE AWARDS ARE AS FOLLOWS:

Airfare and accommodations to attend the WHRCF 2013 for all finalists. *If a team is selected as a finalist, airfare and accommodations will be compensated for one member.

Korean Track:

• First Prize: 1 person/team will receive Gwangju City Mayor Award, KRW3,000,000
• Second Prize: 1 person/team will receive Gwangju City Mayor Award, KRW 2,000,000
• Third Prize: 1 person/team receive Gwangju City Mayor Award, KRW 1,000,000

English Track:

• First Prize: 1 person/team will receive Gwangju City Mayor Award, US $3,000
• Second Prize: 1 person/team will receive Gwangju City Mayor Award, US $2,000
• Third Prize: 1 person/team receive Gwangju City Mayor Award, US $1,000

In the Middle East, as in other parts of the world, the Korean cultural industries have proved extremely efficient in introducing new images of Korea to new audiences. Known as the ‘Korean Wave’, TV dramas, Korean pop music, and Korean cinema has been successful not only commercially, but has also left viewers with an image of Korea as a home of a vibrant culture and artistic innovation. This impression has stimulated interest in Korea and its culture, resulting in a rise in tourism and in the establishment of new Korean studies programs in institutions of higher education. Korea has never been so popular and familiar in the Middle East as it is today.

The purpose of this conference is to examine the way Korean popular culture is being appropriated and received in the Middle East, and to examine the social and academic developments it inspires. The conference presentations will attempt to develop an integrative framework to analyze the dynamic relations between cultural industry, cultural consumption, and academic studies through a focus on the experience of the Korean Wave in the Middle East.

In a broader sense, looking at the Middle East allows us to examine how Korean culture is being received outside the geographically and culturally-proximate markets of Asia and outside the major economic markets of North America and Europe. The success of the Korean cultural industries in a geographically distant and culturally remote Middle East may exemplify the resilience and ability of cultural industries to go beyond national and regional boundaries, and reach out to audiences of various nationalities and ethnicities.

The conference will focus on four major issues: (a) Harbingers, industries, agents, and fans involved in bringing the "Korean Wave" to the Middle East (b) Acceptance and integration of the Korean Wave within the local and other imported (American) popular cultures (c) Relations between Korean cultural presence and Korean academic studies (d) Perspectives, images, and stereotypes of Korea in the Middle East.

Proposals (both individual and panel proposals), including name, institutional affiliation, the title of the paper, and an abstract of 400 words (with relevant keywords listed), should be sent by December 10th, 2012. Successful applicants would be asked to send the complete paper of 5,000 words by April 10th, 2013. The organizers will make an effort to secure funding for accommodations to presenters from abroad.

An awesome opportunity for KTLIT readers and Catch the Wave (Arirang International Radio) Listeners who are into Korean Literature. Early Spring, Mid-Summer is one of the 10 excellent collections published in the Modern Korean Short Stories series by Si-sa-yong-o-sa Publishing and the Korean National Commission for UNESCO. It is expensive and rare. It’s a collection of semi-traditional separation stories and some surprising stories in other genres.

WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO DO? Write a 250-300 word essay (Word, rtf, or PDF format, please!) on why you like Korean literature, what it means to you, or why you want this particular book. Then send that essay to KTLIT. The deadline is October 31, or as we know it in the US, Halloween!

WHAT HAPPENS THEN? The winning essay (and perhaps some of the others) will be posted on KTLIT and this excellent and expensive book will be shipped to you. Runners up may receive other books of lesser value.

Eco-Generation would like to announce the launch of the 5th Eco-Generation Environmental Essay Competition. We hope this competition will motivate children and youth around the world to think once again about young people's action to mitigate climate change. Winners aged 14 - 16 will be invited to the 2013 Global Youth for the Environment Forum to be held in Seoul, Korea, fully sponsored by Samsung Engineering.

Unlike the previous competitions, the 5th Eco-Generation Environmental Essay Competition has been divided into two sections: Korean Domestic Competition and Overseas Competition.

• Winner announcement: November 11, 2012
• Topic: How climate change affects our life: climate change and my efforts towards sustainable life
• Eligibility: Tunza Eco-Generation members around the world.
• Length and format: Your essay must not be longer than 1,500 words.

HOW TO APPLY: Along with your 1,500-word essay, you are required to provide an abstract of 100 words on the application form. An abstract is a short summary in which you explain the main theme of your essay. The abstract will be used by the jury to make a pre-selection.

The Global U-Tourism Team of the Korea Tourism Organization has been stepping up online marketing activities and is looking for a new member to provide assistance. The successful candidate will be mainly involved in editing and developing content for the English version of the Visit Korea website; operating its Social Networking Service pages (Twitter, Facebook); and providing response to travel inquiries. There will be opportunities to Visit Korea's tourist destinations throughout the terms of the contract.

Past editing experience, an outgoing, positive attitude and cultural sensitivity are a must. Demonstrated interest in Korea and basic understanding in tourism are highly preferred. Selected applicants will be required to demonstrate their editing skills on an editing test and successfully pass an interview in order to qualify for the position.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

• Editing Korea travel and news articles for Visitkorea.or.kr website (English).
• Helping to operate and plan content for the English site of Visitkorea.or.kr, and promote the site through various forms of internet marketing.
• Managing KTO's Social Networking Service page (Twitter, Facebook)
• Draft and review presentations, letter, speeches, brochures, etc.
• Replying to queries from travelers
• Occasionally writing travel articles for the website
• Conduct market research provide updates/reports

CONTRACT CONDITIONS:

• After a successful trial period of 4 weeks, the candidate will be hired on a full time basis. During that period, the pay will be 11,000 won per hour.
• Full time in-house position
• One year contract: full time working hours: 5 days a week, 8 hours a day / 12 days of paid vacation
• The KTO will provide a working visa and medical insurance, available 1 month after contract begins due to government processing times.
• Please note: Housing cannot be provided.
• Employment will be at the main office of the KTO in Jung-gu, Seoul.
• Salary: Approximately 2,000,000 KRwon monthly. The payment will be adjusted depending on the applicant’s work experience.

ASSISTANT EDITOR: The Assistant Editor is responsible for helping in overseeing allkpop’s editorial content and community. You will report directly to the VP of Content and be responsible for providing assistance to the COO. RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Journal of Art Theory and Practice is affiliated with the professional society called Korean Society of Art Theories. The journal is peer-reviewed and published twice a year in print.
In June and December 2012 we plan to publish a thematic issue, “Remembering Disaster,” for which we would like to encourage submissions. We welcome submissions from art historians, critics, artists, curators, philosophers, administrators, and other art scholars and professionals.

We have been experiencing unprecedented disasters, which have taken the immense number of lives, destroyed both nature and civilized sites. Our insatiable desire for development has damaged the ecological system and resulted in global warming, which has brought unpredictable disasters in return such as earthquakes, drought, famine, hurricane, the melting of Arctic ice, rapidly expanding deserts, a pandemic, etc. We explore the ways in which to reflect on these phenomena in relation to art. We seek discussions on historical examples of art, from classical to contemporary, which deals with the relation between the human and disaster. Possible discussion includes philosophical and critical reflections on the sublime facing the unpredictable and unknowable power of the disaster, which the human may have unintentionally caused. All perspectives and methodologies are welcome.

Please send a completed article and a CV (including institutional affiliation and contact information) by 1 March (for June publication) and 1 September (for December publication) 2012 to artntheory@gmail.com. Please provide short biography in the cover letter. Articles in English language only will be considered. Please refer to the following author guidelines. Decision on submission will be announced by May 10 (for June publication) and November 10 (for December publication). AUTHOR GUIDELINES

GENERAL

• Articles should be 5,000-7,000 words long including notes and bibliography.
• All submissions should be accompanied by a 300-400 word abstract and 5-10 keywords.
• Please provide the title of article, the name of the author, the institution at the beginning of the article.
• Please provide bibliography at the end of the article. Follow the Chicago Manual of Style.

IMAGES

• Please provide images in a separate file.
• All images must be supplied with full captions: image number, artist’s name, title of work - in italic, media, dimensions (cm), date of work, collection (or place of exhibition).
• Indicate in your text the approximate place for an image to appear thus: [Image 1]

It is the responsibility of the author to supply all necessary images to the correct specification - 300dpi black and white scans, jpeg - and to obtain copyright permission to reproduce the images they wish to use in their article. This permission must be for print reproduction. We cannot reproduce any images without this permission (permission may be in the form of an email, but in all cases must originate from the copyright holder).

Papers not conforming to AATK style requirements will be returned. Only electronic submissions are accepted, but papers containing a significant number of tables and figures may be submitted with a hard copy.
