Fiction 101 Workshop at The Writer's Centre (Singapore)

The Fiction 101 workshop aims to help new and aspiring writers get up to speed with the essentials of writing fiction. Major building blocks of the craft such as plot, character, setting and pace will be explained by the facilitator in an intensive 3-hour workshop. These areas will be actively explored via collaborative and solo exercises that accompany the notes in the workshop manual. The workshop will also introduce different genres in trade fiction to participants. The editing process, an invaluable skill often overlooked by new writers, will also be explored in this workshop. Materials provided include the workshop manual and writing materials.

AIMS
  • Familiarize participants with the different genres of fiction
  • Introduce the essentials of the skills needed to write fiction, including plot, character, setting, and pace
  • Use collaborative learning and microfiction exercises to enhance the participants learning process
  • Introduce the essentials of editing as well as the feedback process for writers

Introduction to fiction – what’s it really about?
Genre fiction and recently popular genres
Introduction to plot
[Break for 15 mins plus Q&A with facilitator]

Part 2 [45 mins]
Plot, continued – 1 solo and 1 collaborative exercise
Introduction to character
Character – 1 solo exercise
[break for 15 mins plus Q&A with facilitator]

Part 3 [60 mins]
Character, continued – 1 collaborative exercise
Introduction to setting
Setting – solo exercise
Introduction to suspense and pace
Suspense and pace – solo OR collaborative exercise
Editing and the feedback process: basics and handy tips

FACILITATOR BIO

With extensive teaching experience, Samantha also lends her professional flair for writing and script analysis to game projects, film and fiction projects.

A graduate of the Nanyang Technological University with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies, Samantha is adept at conceptualizing and facilitating courses with creative solutions and learning strategies. She also writes academic guides and conducts fiction workshops for adults and young learners.

Samantha loves the work of Pablo Neruda and spends an inordinate amount of time thinking about zombies, stubborn plot plans and game concepts that bring the joy of narrative back to gaming. She is the author of Blood On The Moon, the first in the paranormal fiction series, The Daywalker Chronicles, and is hard at work on the second title in the series.
