Kyoto International Cultural Association advertises for Essays on “Japan in the International Community: My View” written either in Japanese or English. We are pleased to present this opportunity for specialists and non-specialists alike to describe their personal experiences in Japan or to compare Japanese society, culture, economies and politics to those of authors’ own countries.
■ Application eligibility: (A) Foreign residents in Japan, or (B) Native speakers of Japanese who live, work or study in Kyoto prefecture. Age must be no younger than 18 years old. The applicants are required to give an oral presentation, if selected, at the final oral contest to be conducted in Kyoto on November 18, 2012.
■ Languages: The essay can be submitted in either English or Japanese. Japanese native-speakers must write their essays in English. The essay must be an unpublished one. The length must be within 2,000 words in English, and within 4,000 characters in Japanese.
■ Application deadline: September 15, 2012.
■ Selection criteria: English essays and Japanese essays will be screened separately by the respective Selection Committees based on how persuasively author’s unique and fresh views on the main theme “Japan in the International Community” are articulated and narrated. Both traditional and contemporary topics on the theme are welcome. The proficiency in English or Japanese writing alone will not be the sole criterion for selection. Three essays each in English and Japanese will be short-listed as winning essays on the basis of written essays, of which one each in English and Japanese will be selected as the best essay through an oral contest.
■ Oral contest: Sunday, November 18, 2012 at Kyoto International Community House
Japanese session 13:00-15:00 English session 15:30-17:30
Local travel allowance will be provided.
Prize: KICA Prize (First prize 100,000 yen, and two runners-up 50,000 yen, for each language.).
