The Gulf region is undergoing broad change as social upheaval sweeps across the Middle East. This is a challenging assignment and we're seeking seasoned correspondent to take charge of political, general and macroeconomic news from the six Gulf countries (Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and UAE) and Yemen, the world's top oil-exporting region. Bahrain has clamped down on pro-democracy protesters, Saudi Arabia has tightened its grip on society while offering handouts to its growing population, even as a royal succession looms. There are colorful stories in every corner of the region. Few areas offer the chance to cover a broad spectrum of stories that examining geopolitical risks, energy and financial news -- all issues that are of keen interest to Thomson Reuters client base. Reuters News enjoys a dominant position in this market and seeks to defend it from aggressive competition.


Essential Day-to-Day Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will have experience in the Middle East in both political and financial news, with a nuanced understanding of social and geopolitical issues. The ability to speak, read and understand Arabic is mandatory. We're looking for an accomplished writer who can inspire and lead a team of six correspondents. Another key skill is the ability to edit, coach others and develop stringers. The successful candidate will be expected to act independently, show initiative and put in long hours when news breaks.

Qualifications
Required Skills (Must have), Necessary industry Experience & associated number of years of experience:

•At least five years experience in journalism
• Excellent reporting and writing skills, cross-asset knowledge, sound news judgment
• Arabic, experience in the Middle East
• Ability to manage a team, build talent, work with regional stringers and correspondents and lead from the front
• Record of scooping, building contacts, analytical writing
• Ability to form sound opinion and analyses on security, politics and economic issues
• Willingness to spend long hours; ability to cope with ambiguity
