Inaugural ScreenSingapore Asian Short Film Awards@ Receives Enthusiastic Response from Across the Asia Pacific
The Board of ScreenSingapore recently announced that the inaugural Asian Short Film Awards@ScreenSingapore has received 90 entries from 15 countries and regions in less than two months. The entries were submitted by filmmakers from Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, Hong Kong, Thailand, the Philippines, Australia, India, Iran, Bangladesh, Cambodia, New Zealand, China, Indonesia and Taiwan, with the majority of the films in English.


A mix of fiction and documentary features, the entries deal with a myriad of topics ranging from friendship, family ties and teenage love, to serious issues such as violence, child abuse and death. The winner stands to walk away with a SGD20,000 cash prize, sponsored by RGM Media, and hosted travel and accommodation to attend the inaugural edition of ScreenSingapore.

As previously announced, legendary filmmaker and three-time Oscar® winner Oliver Stone, will lead a jury comprising Singaporean Film Director, Eric Khoo, Director and CEO of RGM Media, Devesh Chetty, and Asia Chief Critic for The Hollywood Reporter, Maggie Lee, to select the winner of the award.

The Asian Short Film Awards@ScreenSingapore seeks to nurture Asian film talent and celebrate the immense diversity and creativity of young and talented filmmakers. Call for entries, inviting young Asian filmmakers to submit a film with a duration of 10 minutes or less, opened in March 2011 and ended on 30 April 2011.

On making the announcement, Mr Greg Coote, Chairman of the Board of ScreenSingapore, said: “We are extremely encouraged by the outstanding presentation of talent for this year’s Asian Short Film Awards@ScreenSingapore. It is clear from the overwhelming response that there is a vibrant and dynamic film community in Asia and ScreenSingapore is proud to provide an outlet for the growing passion and energy for this new generation of filmmakers. With close to a hundred submissions received, our jury is looking forward to viewing each submission and shortlisting the winner.”

Mr Aubeck Kam, Chief Executive Officer of MDA, said: “We look forward to welcoming the winner of the inaugural Asian Short Film Awards to ScreenSingapore from 5 to 12 June. I am confident he or she will represent the best of the vibrant Asian film industry.”
