The BBC has been broadcasting for many decades to Afghanistan and the surrounding region in the Dari, Pashto and Uzbek languages. As a result we have built a very strong brand in the region. Our latest research figures show that 73% of adults in Afghanistan have listened to our radio output. This consists of 24 hours a day of live radio news and current affairs programming. As the Kabul Bureau Editor, based in Kabul, Afghanistan, you will strive to continue our brand growth through supervision and creation of outstanding media output.
The Role
You will be responsible for the editorial management of the BBC Kabul Bureau. As a result, we will expect you to lead, inspire and manage a multi-disciplined team of over 70 people in Kabul and across Afghanistan. Using your superb planning and organisational skills, you will supervise the bureau’s output to ensure the production of first-class, creative and original multimedia output.
The candidate
We’re looking for an experienced, talented and successful radio or television journalist. You will demonstrate this through your sound editorial judgement, allied with a proven record of introducing creative programme ideas. These skills will be supplemented by your extensive knowledge of Afghanistan, its media market and the needs of our listeners. Due to these needs, a good working knowledge of Dari, Pashto and English are essential requirements, as is strong managerial experience.
Output also includes:
• Hourly news bulletins
• Features and analysis
• Interactive programmes
• Drama and Educational output commissioned by the Afghan Service in conjunction with the BBC World Service Trust
More about the Role
• As a key representative of the BBC in Afghanistan, you may also be called upon to give analysis and comment on Afghanistan for the wider BBC international audience
• Responsibility for finances of the Kabul Bureau. This includes operating within the allocated budget, supervising the operation of financial controls and acting as a signatory for the bank accounts.
• Ensure that the team make the best possible use of new technology and its opportunities, adapting working practices and training staff accordingly.
More about the candidate
• Experience of working in TV journalism would be an advantage
• Thorough knowledge of, and identification with, BBC editorial standards
• Good technical skills with the ability to edit and update online pages
