ABOUT CREATIVE ARTS PROGRAMME
Aim
The aim of the CAP is to nurture talented young writers
Objectives
* To expose participants to local literature and other forms of art
* To enable participants to understand and appreciate the local, regional and global literature scene
* To provide participants with the opportunity to pursue their interests as well as learn and work together with like-minded peers
* To provide the opportunity for participants who show commitment and potential in writing to be mentored by a published author
* To instill in participants a sense of the writer’s responsibility to society and the impact of the written word on the well-being of others
Organisation & Structure
The CAP is jointly organised by the Gifted Education Branch, Ministry of Education and the University Scholars Programme (USP), National University of Singapore. It comprises a Creative Arts Seminar and a Mentorship Attachment.
The Creative Arts Seminar offers an annual literary adventure for selected pupils.
It comprises the following:
* Writing Workshops which give young writers the opportunity to interact with other young writers and to learn from established writers.
* Plenary Sessions which expose participants to current and exciting issues on writing and the arts.
* Hands-on Sessions which enable participants to experiment with different art forms.
* Performance Workshops which give participants the opportunity to learn an art form under the guidance of a professional artiste and perform it at the closing ceremony of the Seminar.
A 9-month Mentorship Attachment is offered to selected participants as a follow-up to the Seminar. Participants are selected by the mentors based on their portfolios of creative works and their participation during workshops. Mentored participants are given the opportunity to work under the guidance of a writer, learning from the expertise and experience which only a writer can provide. The works of mentored participants are published in the "Eye on the World" series each year.
Eligibility
The Creative Arts Programme is targeted at Secondary 2 and 3, and JC 1/Year 5 students.
Creative Arts Seminar Application
To apply for the Creative Arts Seminar, students must submit the following:
a. 3 hard copies of your portfolio of best works. Please note that the portfolios will NOT be returned to you. The minimum number of works to be included in each portfolio is 5, and maximum 8. For prose, short stories or novel excerpts should not exceed 1,500 words per piece. For novels with chapters, up to 3 individual chapters, each not more than 1,500 words in length, will be counted as part of the number of works to be included. In other words, each chapter will be considered as one submitted piece. The portfolio should not consist only of chapters from one novel. Portfolios that exceed the limit in terms of number of pieces or words are discouraged and will be assessed at the judges’ discretion.
b. 3 copies of the application form.
c. 1 copy of the undertaking form.
d. 1 copy of the teacher recommendation form. The recommendation form must be in a sealed envelope with the teacher’s signature across the seal.

CAP Mentorship Attachment Application
To apply for the CAP Mentorship Attachment, students must submit the following:
a. 1 hard copies and 1 soft copy of your portfolio of best works.
Please note the following:
* You will only be chosen for mentorship in 1 genre. Please submit the portfolio in the genre that you are strongest in.
* All your creative works in soft copy should be saved in ONE document in a CD.
* As portfolios will NOT be returned to you, please do not send your only copy.
* The maximum number of works to be included in each portfolio is 5. For prose, short stories or novel excerpts should not exceed 1,500 words per piece. For novels with chapters, up to 3 individual chapters, each not more than 1,500 words in length, will be counted as part of the number of works to be included. In other words, each chapter will be considered as one submitted piece. The portfolio should not consist only of chapters from one novel. Selection
Selection is based on creative writing ability. The following criteria will be used to assess the portfolios:
* Sense of form
* Precision with language
* Truthfulness of feeling
* Originality of thought and imagination
* Sensitivity to the world at large
Portfolios which contain plagiarised material will be disqualified.
Results of Application
Secondary School
Letters on the results of application will be sent to respective schools by mid April.
Junior College
Letters on the results of application will be sent to respective colleges by early May.
Schools with more than 5 selected participants are required to send a liaison teacher to the seminar.
