Guidelines

We publish outstanding emerging writers and welcome writing from anywhere on any subject, have a special place in our hearts for cross-cultural experience, especially when such experience somehow involves Sweden.

We accept simultaneous submissions, but if your work is accepted elsewhere, please let us know at once.

Submissions should generally be no more than 2000 words, but far shorter is far better. We favor stuff that can be read onscreen. No more than five poems at a time. We do not pay for publication.

We accept short fiction, short–shorts/flash fiction and creative non–fiction. We’re not interested in genre writing or travel writing as such, but science fiction, fantasy, horror, crime and travel stories that in their creativity and humanity reach outside the expected framework are welcome. We’re interested in outstanding poetry of all kinds, especially in Swedish haiku-inspired micropoetry (!) which we publish under Translation.

[For us, haiku is an epigrammatic Japanese verse form, usually 17 syllables or less, usually on three lines or less, conventionally but not necessarily 5-7-5. Haiku tends to use juxtaposition rather than metaphor, sensory input rather than abstract concepts, common rather than elevated language. Focus on nature and seasons is traditional, but focus on human behavior (senryĆ») is welcome as are other types of “free haiku.”]

We’re also interested in short, entertaining pieces about some aspect of the art of writing - preferably humorous rather than preachy, expressed in action rather that in principle.

If your work has been published previously, include a credit line stating where. At Frostwriting, posting in an online workshop does not count as previous publication. Very generally speaking, we try to steer away from using work that has been published before.

If you refer to literary journals in your bio, please limit yourself to your best two. We try to create active outbound links to the titles so our writer-readers can easily check out sites that publish the kind of stuff they like. This takes a little time, so the fewer titles the better.

Speaking of time, it usually takes us at least three months to respond to a submission. We usually don’t take time to give feedback, though we do strive to show respect and appreciation for the artistic efforts of our contributors without whom frostwriting.com could not flourish.

Submit your work through our online form. If you have any problems during the submission process please contact us at info@frostwriting.com.
