Philippine PEN: Teaching Literature Workshop
Dates: 8 August 2011 (Baguio) and 10 October 2011 (Bicol)
The Philippine Center of International PEN (Poets, Playwrights, Essayists, Novelists) continues its series of workshops on teaching literature in selected regions of the Philippines this year.
Called “For Love of the Word: Workshops on Teaching Philippine Literature in High School and College,” the next workshop will be held on August 8 (Monday), from 8:30 to 4:30 pm, at Juan Luna Hall (UP Baguio Auditorium), University of Philippines-Baguio. Eminent writers/scholars and university professors Delfin Tolentino and Jun Cruz Reyes will serve as facilitators.
This workshop is co-hosted by UP-Baguio, and supported by PEN International in UK, and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA).
This project is PEN’s modest way of assisting in the improvement of literature education in the country. In the 2010 Cebu Congress, PEN has resolved to work more closely with the education sector, as it “recognizes that literary taste is shaped in the schools, especially the public school system; it is where generations must be taught to appreciate the outstanding works of our very own writers, works that constitute the soul of our nation.”
The first three workshops were successfully held on March 25 at Far Eastern University-Manila, May 6 at the University of San Agustin-Iloilo, and June 9 at the University of Cebu.
Forthcoming are three more workshops—in Bicol, Pangasinan, and Cagayan de Oro. The Bicol workshop will be held on October 10, in cooperation with Naga College Foundation.
For inquiries, please contact Philippine PEN at Solidaridad Bookstore, 531 Padre Faura St., Ermita, Manila, Philippines. Tel. (632) 5230870; Telefax (632) 5255038; email: philippinepen@yahoo.com; mobile: +639175287491.

The group shall be guide by the Rules of the UPU international letter-writing competition for young people set for this year’s event. Posters, flyers and other forms of promotional materials shall be prepared and distributed to post offices and schools nationwide.
The purpose of this project is to develop the young people’s skills in composition and the subtlety of their thoughts, to foster affection for letter writing, and to contribute to the strengthening of international friendship — one of the essential missions of the UPU. On top of this, the promotion of letter writing would certainly arrest the fast declining volume of personal correspondence that is being affected by alternative and modern communications technology.
The main objective, therefore, is to stimulate letter writing among the youth especially with the growing number of Overseas Filipino workers numbering around 9 million as of today. Their presence abroad is undoubtedly a very good opportunity for the Corporation to increase its postage sales once we succeed in promoting the habit of letter writing among their friends and relatives. Further, this year’s theme is all the more appropriate and imperative for the postal service to have a direct hand in its promotion.

Call for Submissions: (Women Writers') Love Letters to VS Naipaul
If you have read VS Naipaul’s recent interview posted in The Guardian, you are aware and likely perplexed, annoyed, outraged or amused by his banal comments regarding women writers, their lack of mastery in the home and in the world of letters, and the sentimental “feminine tosh” they inevitably produce.
From The Guardian: Naipaul is no stranger to criticism. In the past Naipaul has criticised India's top female authors for their "banality" on the topic he is best known for writing about, the legacy of British colonialism.
While you might stand in awe of his ability to determine the gender of a writer in two paragraphs or less, you might also find a tinge of dismay colouring the now setting sun of your once shining belief that we had in fact moved past the 19th-century in our appreciation of categories of gender.
In any case, VS Naipaul means no harm, but he has also clarified he is not a fan of the species known as the woman writer. For those who respect and love writing and literature, regardless of gender on either side of the reader-writer equation, it hurts to find a discussion of the art so reduced in nature.
There is really only one thing left to do when one’s (he)art is broken: write a love letter.
Do you have a love letter for VS Naipaul? Please see our guidelines for submission below.
Guidelines for Submission
If you have a love letter for VS Naipaul and you would like to share it, please send it as an attachment to loveletterstovsnaipaul@yahoo.ca.
We are looking for original material not posted or published elsewhere. Please include both your real name and your pen name. Your pen name will be published with your love letter, and a cross-listing of your pen name and real name will appear on a separate page on the site.
We cannot promise to publish everything, and we will not publish violent or inappropriate content. We will, however, publish intelligent letters with intelligent content. Be they spiked with vitriol, awash with sentiment, amused to the point of disbelief, or simply bored with the same old argument, your love letters should both inform and entertain.
It should also be known that we delight in all forms of “feminine tosh,” regardless of the author’s gender.

Youths Turn to Community Theater & Digital Story Telling to Address Domestic Violence and Trafficking
Young people in Olongapo and Angeles City are tapping their creative talents to combat serious issues that have plagued their communities: domestic violence and trafficking. Using community theater and digital story telling as tools, they have shared their first-hand experiences, raising awareness about violence against women and youth.
These innovative methods are a direct result of WeDpro’s European Union (EU)-supported project called The Red AVP (Anti-Violence Project), short for Private and Public Faces of Violence Against Women: Addressing Domestic Violence and Trafficking In the Urban Poor Communities and Entertainment Centers of Angeles City and Olongapo City.
According to Aida Santos-Maranan, Chairperson of WeDpro and Project Manager of The Red AVP, the sites were chosen because of the prevalence of abuse in the said areas.
“The dust left behind by the US military bases in Subic and Clark, even if it was more than decades ago, has filtered into all aspects of lives in Angeles and Olongapo. The greatest tragedies of prostitution, domestic violence, sexual exploitation and trafficking in the red light districts of Angeles City and Olongapo City are the consequences it has done for the youth and children,” she said.
“These children and youth grew up amidst a seemingly endless cycle of violence and aggression, and are largely deprived of the kind of environment that allows them a safe space in which to play, experiment and develop a healthy and meaningful sense of themselves and their surroundings,” she added.
Through The Red AVP, WeDpro established two community theaters--”Salamin” in Angeles City and “Maskara” in Olongapo City. The theater program has provided opportunities for the youth participants to develop the skills, self-knowledge, and confidence which would empower them to challenge present realities and to take control of their future.
The theater scholars attended various workshops, undergoing theater exercises and group dynamic processes and activities that tackled basic improvisation techniques, acting exercises, mime, visual arts, voice lessons, dance and creative movements. These exercises and activities enable the scholars to harness and maximize their creativity.
After a series of workshops and with the guidance of The Red AVP Community-based Theater Development Director and Lead Trainer Joel Saracho, who completed the crucial last quarter activities, “Salamin” and “Maskara” were able to perform in public their own plays that relate to the challenges that they face in their communities, including domestic violence and trafficking.
Some members of the theater groups also created their own digital stories in WeDpro’s project called The Youth Tell Their Stories: Breaking Silences, Using ICT as a Form of Healing. Supported by the Association for Progressive Communications and the Foundation for Media Alternatives, in collaboration with Isis International-Manila, the project enabled survivors of violence and sex trafficking to tell their stories and experiences using digital media.
Among the stories were -883440246 Pagnanasa, where Allen narrates with pain his experience of sexual abuse from his stepfather; Bakit Ganun, a young man’s tale of violence that he experienced from his own parents; and Hubog ng Aking Kabataan, where a youth tells her story about being victimized by child trafficking at the age of 12.
“We use art as a social forum and as a balm for wounded spirits,” Santos-Maranan said. “Our daily witness of their enthusiasm and the seeds of their transformation into self-confident and healthy individuals, is what gives us the conviction and motivation to go on.”
