If you have a talent for creating illustrated short stories, you are invited to enter San José Public Library’s Graphic Novel Contest for all ages as part of our Summer Reading Celebration, 2011. This contest is sponsored by San José Public Library and TRY Japan Culture Group.


Here’s how to enter …

* Create your own graphic novel with a maximum length of 8 pages of text and black-and-white drawings using letter-size paper, including the cover page.
* Each submission must be the creative and original work of a single individual—the author/illustrator.
* Be sure to include your NAME, AGE and CONTACT INFORMATION on the back of your entry.
* Submit a photocopy that is an accurate reflection of the original (please do not submit original work as submissions are non-returnable).
* Entries can be submitted to any San José Public Library location no later than 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 30, 2011. There is a limit of one entry per contestant.

Entries will be judged on content and illustrations by a panel of library staff and comic industry professionals. All winners will get a gift card.

* Children: first prize $50; second prize $25; third prize $20
* Teens: first prize $100; second prize $75; third prize $50
* Adults: first prize $100; second prize $75; third prize $50

Winners will be announced and prizes awarded at a reception to be held at the Evergreen Branch Library on August 27th at 3:00p.m.in the Community Room.

San José Public Library reserves the right to refuse submissions that are not appropriate for a general audience.

Sesuai mantra kami, “Publishing Dreams”, MAKKO membuka kesempatan yang seluas-luasnya bagi teman-teman komikus Indonesia untuk berpartisipasi dalam majalah kami lewat proses submission. Proses ini digunakan oleh tim editor untuk mereview karya kalian sebelum dipublikasikan kepada pembaca, persis seperti penerbitan buku pada umumnya. Proses ini jugalah yang membedakan MAKKO dari situs-situs komik online di Indonesia. Kami berkomitmen menerbitkan yang terbaik dari Indonesia, untuk pembaca kita dan juga dunia.


Kriteria komik yang diharapkan :

1. Kami mencari komik-komik semua-umur / remaja berkualitas dengan berbagai macam genre yang tidak kami batasi.
2. Komik boleh berupa serial panjang, serial pendek, one-shot maupun komik strip.
3. Komik boleh hitam-putih ataupun berwarna
4. Komik boleh menggunakan style apapun, tapi inget untuk selalu tampil unik ya!
5. Komik boleh ditargetkan baik untuk laki-laki maupun perempuan.
6. Tidak menyinggung SARA dan Pornografi secara eksplisit.
7. Hindari unsur/adegan kekerasan secara berlebihan, kecuali jika dianggap relevan dengan tema cerita dan disertai dengan penjelasan dan penyelesaian yang dapat diterima. Editor yang akan menentukan batasannya.
8. Komik diharapkan mengandung muatan lokal ( ingat, lokal bukan cuma wayang ya ).
9. Jika menampilkan profesi tertentu didalam komik, riset adalah wajib.
10. Komik yang punya potensi untuk dibaca oleh pembaca di mancanegara. Meski konten-nya lokal, komik harus punya pesan yang universal., serta memiliki potensi untuk diangkat / diadaptasi ke media lain, seperti TV, layar lebar, atau merchandise seperti action-figures.

At DoujinPress.com we are committed to casting the spotlight on doujinshi artists in a robust, flexible and economically feasible way without sacrificing important core values and interests.

Overview

The Doujinshi Short Publishing Program accepts artwork from aspiring or professional artists and publishes them using an on-demand technology. Publications are sold on DoujinPress.com and the artist receives part of the profits. There is no cost to the artist to publish. Artists that become popular on DoujinPress.com will be considered for larger commissions that will be printed using offset printing methods.

The first round of commission considerations will be on July 30th, 2011. Depending on how things go, DoujinPress.com will begin impromptu considerations after the first round is over.

DoujinPress.com is accepting manga or artbook doujinshi. We are not accepting sketches. Please see below for details.

Content

While DoujinPress.com already has a reputation for selling yuri doujinshi, we are not against other genres. We will accept all series and genres of doujinshi provided they do not contain rap3 and do not extraordinarily s3xually objectify women (or men for that matter). We realize this second point is up to interpretation so if you think you may be submitting something that falls into a gray area, send us an email first.

Explicit content is of course okay.

Colors

Doujinshi covers can be in color or black and white. Inside pages should be black and white and make use of screentone where possible. We will accept full color books provided the artist requests it beforehand. Samples from the artists will be required to secure a full color printing.

Please save black and white pages using grayscale mode.

Page Format

Shorts must be 6, 10, or 14 pages in length. We are actually printing 8, 12 and 16 page books, respectively, however the inside of the front and back cover must be left empty. For longer books please contact us first. When counting pages, please count the cover. Ex: Pg 1 = Front Cover, Pg 2 = Inside of Front Cover, Pg 3 = First Internal Page (Not on the cover).

All submissions must conform to the A4/A5 format we’ve provided as templates (PNG and PSD) . The final book size is a trimmed A5, however it is acceptable to use two-page scenes that will fit in the trim area of the A4 template provided.

You may order your pages and content in Western or Japanese format. Please be clear about what orientation you are using when you submit your book.

Submission

All submissions must be digital. It is acceptable to create doujinshi any way you see fit (but without stealing other people’s art) as long as you can submit them online.

Please submit your cover in A4 format (back and front), and submit your inside pages in A5 format as single pages, which is one side of the template up to the center divider, as full resolution PNGs ordered and named in the correct page order. The best way to transfer large files is to upload an archive (ZIP or RAR) to our Mediafire account. A link to our dropbox can be provided by request.

Acceptance

DoujinPress.com reserves the right to reject any submission. Please closely follow the guidelines in this document to avoid being rejected.

Publishing and Sales

DoujinPress.com will use the inside of the back cover for the “Printed by DoujinPress” page. This footer of this page will read something like this, with changes to accommodate each series and production company:

Unauthorized reproduction prohibited.
This is a Touhou Project fanbook.
The Touhou Project is a production of Team Shanghai Alice/ZUN.

After receiving and approving your doujinshi short it will be listed for sale in the main catalog. The price is set by DoujinPress (most books will sell for between $1.50 to $4). Artists will receive about 10-25% of the profit (not the gross) from each sale, paid via PayPal when the total amount owed is over $50. The percentage is determined upon acceptance of each work. Artists who publish more books with DoujinPress.com will receive higher percentages depending on the success of the previous books.

Artists will be able to purchase their own book, in unlimited quantities, at wholesale price (not including shipping.)

Books are, as stated, printed in a trimmed A5 format. The cover is printed on 58lb gloss, and the inside is printed on a bright 32lb or 48lb. Paper specifications will be adjusted as necessary.

Licensing

Submitting your work to DoujinPress.com is providing an exclusive license to DoujinPress.com to sell and market your doujinshi online or offline in any format in the language you submitted the work in and/or English. You also grant DoujinPress.com permission to use the work for marketing purposes. After submitting your work you may not post or share the complete, original files for the work.

Your license with DoujinPress.com is available to expire when DoujinPress.com fails to sell a book containing the artists work within any 6 month time period. At that time the artist may request the expiration of the license.

Queer Manga is an anthology of LGBT stories and artists. We are here to embrace the community to highlight original stories of love in all its forms. All genres will be taken into consideration. Yaoi/BL, Yuri/Shoujo Ai, Bara, and American Style LGBT will all be accepted. Submissions must be in by Dec 1, 2011 to be featured in this book.

Content Guidelines

1. The anthology will be rated R (MPAA version), ie, nudity is allowed but s3xual activity must remain under the sheets.
2. No Fanart. All content must be creator owned.
3. Stories must be presented in a completed manner. Simple sketches or unfinished work will be rejected and not taken into consideration. We can provide some editing and feedback for those who wish for it.
4. All stories must have at least one LGBT character in them that is highlighted in the story in some form.
5. We ask that all sequential submissions to please present an basic outline and plot to queermanga@gmail.com before continuing.
6. This is not a p0rn anthology. While s3x is a plot device, we are not looking for it to be THE plot device.
7. Pin-ups will be accepted, but in limited numbers. They are to be used as story transitions and filler.
8. Because this is currently an unpaid project, we will allow previously published/used art to be used provided that you have the distribution rights to the work and all characters are your originals.
9. For now, Furry art is not being accepted.

Technical Guidelines

1. Ka-Blam will be the projected printer, so please use their templates (here) for your pages.
2. This will currently be a black and white/gray scale publication.
3. To repeat the deadline is Dec 1. 2011

All stories will be screened throughout the year and I will provide feedback on everything that we receive. We will provide editing, basic typesetting/lettering for those that need it, and we have a professional graphic designer on our team to make sure this book will look its best. We will be here for you the entire way of putting this book together as we ourselves are creators.

Queer Manga will run the con circuit with myself, spanning several conventions as well as will be published digitally. Currently a 100 percent of the profits will be put into creating the next volume and we will be absorbing all the initial costs ourselves.

Announcement of winner: 22 July 2011

Comic-Con International (Comic-Con) is proud to announce the nominations for the Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards 2011. The nominees, chosen by a blue-ribbon panel of judges, reflect the wide range of material being published in comics and graphic novel form today, from heartfelt autobiographical works to books aimed at kids and teens to deluxe hardcover archival editions. Unlike in past years, superheroes are very much in the minority in this year's selections.

ELMER is a window into an alternate Earth where chickens have suddenly acquired the intelligence and consciousness of humans, where they consider themselves a race no different from whites, browns or blacks, and push to recognize rights for themselves as the newest members of the human race. ELMER tells the story of a family of chickens who live and struggle to survive in a suddenly complicated, dangerous and yet beautiful world.

Named for acclaimed comics creator Will Eisner, the awards are in their 23rd year of highlighting the best publications and creators in comics and graphic novels. The 2011 Eisner Awards judging panel consists of comics store rep John Berry (Metropolis Comics, Bellflower, California), Comic-Con board of director Ned Cato (geekroundtable.com), librarian Karen Green (Columbia University), comics writer/editor Andy Helfer (The Shadow; Paradox Press), publishing consultant Rich Johnson (previously with DC Comics and Yen Press), and retail manager Chris Powell (Lone Star Comics, Dallas, Texas).

Ballots with this year's nominees will be going out in mid-April to comics creators, editors, publishers, and retailers. A downloadable pdf of the ballot will also be available online, and a special website has been set up for online voting. The results in all categories will be announced in a gala awards ceremony on the evening of Friday, July 22 at Comic-Con International.

Voting in one Eisner Awards category, the Hall of Fame, is already completed. The judges chose the nominees earlier this year, and voting was conducted solely online, with voting ending on March 24.

The Eisner Awards are presented under the auspices of Comic-Con International, a nonprofit educational organization dedicated to creating awareness of and appreciation for comics and related popular artforms, primarily through the presentation of conventions and events that celebrate the historic and ongoing contributions of comics to art and culture. KASPERSKY COMICS CONTEST GUIDELINES

Participants

1. All amateur comic book and storyboard artists

Storyboard

1. The storyboards should adhere to a strict PG-13 code (no nudity, explicit depiction of genitalia or the act of copulation, and no excessive gore and violence).
2. The use of photographs, filtered pics, and photo manipulated images as part of the storyboard is prohibited.
3. The use of 3D is prohibited.
4. The storyboards should be colored
5. The storyboards should be in English.
6. Digital drawing and lettering is allowed.
7. Plagiarism and swiping are grounds for automatic disqualification.
8. The comics is only 1 page and should not exceed 1 page.
9. Kaspersky characters SHOULD be included in the comics. (Below – KAV (left) & KIS (right))

Theme:

The selected theme for the comic is “No to Software Piracy”

Registration:

1. Registration will start from April 4, 2011 to April 9, 2011

Last year, Torara , the tiger mascot for the J-Pop Anime Singing Contest, was given a name and this time, the Embassy of Japan is calling on all Filipino artists to let their creative juices flow and create a short manga about Torara . Join the Torara Manga Making Mini Contest!

The contest is open to all amateur artists aged 13 to 30 years old. Artists who have previously published artworks/ manga in books, newspapers, magazines and other publications are automatically disqualified from joining the contest.

Participants must create their own original short manga , featuring Torara as one of the main characters of the story. Entries must be hand-drawn and in black and white format. An applicant must submit only one entry for the contest. Japanese, English, or Filipino may be used for the script of the manga . Entries in Japanese and Filipino must have English translation. Application forms are available at the JICC Library or at the Embassy of Japan website at www.ph.emb-japan.go.jp.

Entries, along with the duly-accomplished application form, may be personally delivered or mailed to the Japan Information and Culture Center (JICC), Emassy of Japan, 2627 Roxas Boulevard, Pasay City. The deadline for the submission of entries is on May 20, 2011.

Winning entries will receive exciting prizes from Animation International Licensing Philippines, the licensing company behind the popular manga and anime Doraemon . Top entries will be displayed during the 2011 J-Pop Anime Singing Contest Grand Final to be held at the SM Megamall Event Center on July 23, 2011 (Philippines-Japan Friendship Day).
