Call for Nominations: The 2012 Asian/ Pacific American Award for Literature

The Literary Award Committee of the Asian/Pacific American Librarians Association (APALA) will be reviewing titles for the upcoming Asian/ Pacific American Award for Literature (APAAL) to be announced at the ALA Midwinter Meeting in Seattle, Washington in 2013. This award honors and recognizes individual works related to Asian/Pacific American experiences (either historical or contemporary) or Asian/Pacific American cultures. All entries must be received by September 30, 2012.

Please note that we have made several changes to the 2012-2013 Award guidelines and that the submission deadline is now moved up to September 30, 2012. If you would like to submit an entry for consideration, please carefully follow the guidelines and directions on the next two pages. We appreciate if you submit your entries to the appropriate committee as early as possible in order to allow adequate time to read and reflect on each submission. The Awards committee looks forward to reviewing your submissions.

GOAL: The goal is to honor and recognize individual works related to Asian/Pacific American experiences (either historical or contemporary) or Asian/Pacific American cultures.

AWARD: The awards will be announced at the 2013 ALA Midwinter Meeting in Seattle, Washington. Winners of the APALA Literature Award will be given the award seal during the 2013 ALA Annual APALA Literature Award Ceremony. The winner of each category will receive a plaque during the 2013 American Library Association Annual Conference in Chicago, IL. A press release will be sent to various national publications. The Asian/Pacific American Award for Literature is now an annual event.

ELIGIBLE WORKS:
  • Works eligible must have had premier publication in 2011 and 2012 and must have been published for general commercial release in the U.S.
  • Works should be related to Asian/Pacific American experiences (either historical or contemporary) or Asian/Pacific American cultures. Works should be written or illustrated by an Asian/Pacific American. The author or illustrator should have resident status in the United States or Canada.. The five award categories are: a. Adult fiction, b. Adult nonfiction, c. Youth Category (Children’s Literature, Young Adult Literature), and d. Picture Books.
  • Works must have been published in the United States or one of its territories or Canada.
  • Self-published works and exclusive Internet publications are not eligible.
  • For fiction titles, anthologies or books containing the work of more than one author are not eligible.
  • Works must be originally written in English.
  • Works that have previously won other prizes or recognition are eligible.
  • If no books are found to meet the selection criteria, no award will be given.
  • Poetry and Graphic Novels will be eligible for consideration in either Adult or Youth categories: please determine which committee is appropriate for any Graphic Novel you wish to submit".
ENTRY OF WORKS:
  • Nominated titles should be submitted to appropriate Award Committee before October 1, 2012 via the online entry form on the APALA website (www.apalaweb.org). Entries may be submitted by an author, publisher, agent, publicist or individual. All entries received after October 1, 2012 will not be considered for the 2013 award. This is due to a procedure change by the committee.
  • The Literary Award Committee is not responsible for lost submissions.
  • An author, publisher, publicist or agent may submit more than one entry per author, but no more than one entry per work.
  • If possible, publishers should send a review copy to each of the committee members of the appropriate category.
SUBMISSIONS OF ENTRY: Please send one copy of your submission to the jury co-chairs and each of the following names and addresses in the respective categories. Please label on the envelope “APAAL Award Entry.”
