The International Committee of Red Cross - an independent and neutral organization working to protect and assist victims of armed conflicts and other situations of violence worldwide - welcomes nominations to the second Red Cross Award for Humanitarian Reporting. The competition aims to recognize stories and images that provide insight and responsibly depict the consequence of armed conflict and large-scale situations of violence on civilians. An initiative of ICRC, the competition is held in partnership with the Philippine Red Cross, with the support of International News Safety Institute, The Peace and Conflict Journalism Network Philippines, Philippine Center for Photojournalism, and Rotary Club of Manila. This biannual initiative, originally launched in 2011, seeks to highlight respect for human dignity amid armed violence and to promote international humanitarian law, the rules that seeks to limit, for humanitarian reasons, the effects of armed conflict.
WHO MAY JOIN? Professional or freelance journalists or photojournalists for print/ online, TV and radio whose news reports, features, documentaries or photographs were published/ aired from May 1, 2012 to May 1, 2013.
MECHANICS:
Entries must highlight the humanitarian consequences of armed conflicts or other large-scale situations of violence for affected populations, and/ or the importance of international humanitarian law. Entries should focus on displacement, food, water and sanitation, livelihood, and other related effects on civilians or on how respect for humanitarian law is promoted.
Entries may be in English, Filipino or local dialects. All non-English entries must be accompanied with translations/ subtitles or they will be disqualified.
There will be no limit to the number of entries sent by an individual or the length of entries, so long as it satisfies the required focus. The requirements for submitting entries are:

- Print (published text in print): Scanned/ PDF copies of published articles.
- Online (published text on the web): Link/s to the website.
- Video/ TV (aired video reports on TV or the web): Mpeg format + script (include date aired)
- Audio/ radio (aired audio reports on radio or the web): Mp3 format + script (include date aired)
- Photography (photo appearing in print, on TV or the web): Photo in JPEG format must have been published in any of the platforms. Include caption and link to website, scanned copy of publication in newspaper, or video grab.
- Option A: Email your entries along with a nomination letter from your organization and the required details for the entry you have sent (see table above). Nomination letters must be endorsed by an authorized signatory (publisher/editor) and be in PDF format. Nomination letters may be downloaded from the websites or partner organizations or below.
- Option B: If your files are too large to be sent through e-mail, use an online file-sharing website (e.g., Dropbox.com, Yousendit.com, Largefilesasap.com) and submit your entry to redcrossawardph@gmail.com. These websites accept up to 2GB file size.
- Option C: Those without access to the Internet may send their entry and nomination letter to the nearest ICRC office through snail mail, courier or personal delivery. As other locations become available to accepting entries, check for updates on the ICRC website's special event page for the contest.
